to give a little more insight on the last scene (one of my favorites in the entire show): for dongmae, it’s especially unacceptable to even touch, let alone grab the skirt of a noblewoman like aesin, considering the fact that he is from the lowest class of society at the time. in the start of the scene, dongmae’s fingers only touched the edge of aesin’s skirt for like 2 seconds; yet he freezes, like he can’t dare to just naturally pick up the pen— bc the social barrier between them is just so vast to him/the world. aesin is his first love, and she’s always going to be the daughter of a noble household till the day she dies, and he a lowly butcher’s son. to him, it feels like he doesn’t have the right to love her; since nothing could ever allow them to be together. basically, he feels helplessness + longing + anger at the same time, and the anger takes over when he grips her red skirt (the symbolism of her bright red skirt ugh so good). it’s like him wondering, what if someone like me did dare to touch a noble lady like this? the whole scene pretty much encapsulates his love and hatred towards aesin, in a really complex and beautiful way.

++as for aesin, she carries the trauma of that encounter since childhood. beyond the fear and shame she felt that a man tried to touch her (esp given her conservative upbringing), she was also humiliated by dongmae’s words: “just a pampered noble lady.” she ofc wants to see everyone treated kindly regardless of their birth, but his words serve as a reminder to her that she’ll always be a noblewoman first, even those close to her and those she tries to help. so aesin carries a buried mix of fear and anger— emotions beautifullyyyy mirrored through the choice of background music in the last scene! from her perspective, a song harsh and fierce like a declaration of war; and for dongmae, a sorrowful love song. 🥺

also, did you know that the actor playing huiseong (aesin's betrothed) is tiffany from snsd's husband? they're super lovely together and he was my all time drama crush because of his other drama, six flying dragons + this one!

This drama has so many metaphors. For example, Eugene-gun Dongmae-sword Heeseong-flower Heeseong said the reason he likes flowers is that they are beautiful and useless. This symbolizes Heeseong himself and his love for peace. Peace is beautiful, but at the same time, it is useless. The word “useless” may sound negative. but if you think about how quiet peaceful moments can be, it might make sense. And, in peaceful moments, people do not engage in actions necessary for survival. People enjoy music and art. They look like a kind of "useless". But Aesin refuses to stay quiet. She wants strength. So she keeps practicing shooting. Heeseong thought she looks like a flower, but that was the thing she hated hearing the most. Also I love your comment about Dongmae! I think he shows cruelty because of the trauma from his childhood when he was powerless. The truth is that he still has a kind heart left😁

Gu Dong-mae is a really interesting character to me as well because he's so multi-faceted - He appears to be a traitorous (understandably why) and ruthless mercenary who would do anything for money, but he also seems to adhere to a certain baseline of morality. He clearly feels disdain towards Ae-sin, whom he believes to be just a sheltered noble lady, and yet you can also see his adoration for her as he vents his anger and frustration towards Hui-seong's return at the Japanese merchant and also his subordinates. The final scene of this episode is really breathtaking - it felt like an imagery of his attempt to declare his desire for Ae-sin, someone way higher in social status, albeit in an unsightly manner (which was what he had been doing to protect her in previous episodes), and Ae-sin shedding tears as if denying his actions. I just really love how this series portrays character relationships and its various sub-themes!

This is my first watch, and I find Dong-mae hardest to figure out too😅 He looks like a villain... but I can't quite say that he is. l think the last scene showed not only his feelings for Ae-sin, but also a side of Aeshin we couldn't see often. She’s usually portrayed as this bold, progressive woman who takes action and stands up for herself. But she also grew up within the norms of her time, so seeing her tear up over something like grabbing her skirt by its edge shows a more sheltered, innocent side of her, althoguh it;s understable. It somehow reminded me of what Dong-mae said when they first met, “you are just noble lady who knows nothing” And l felt the red skirt is really symbolic too, like it’s fueling his desire and bringing all those buried feelings to the surface. Even touching the tip of her skirt, something so closely connected to the woman one loves, could carry so much meaning. But beyond the gesture itself, it crossed a social boundary while also seeming to hold all the feelings he could never put into words. such a small touch feel so sensual and charged. I really loved how much was left unspoken in that scene. 🙌
