After this rewatch, I've convinced myself that Levy and Petra did have some kind of relationship. The way Levy stops when he sees her body, how he retrieves the Survey Corps shield from her corpse (which he later says belongs to Ivan), and Petra's father's words about marriage.

I do love how messy the war is in this show. No matter how much you trust and care about people things will still go wrong, people will die, and you still need to keep fighting.

One pretty sad but neat detail is that you can see Levi kneel down above Petra's body and he collects something, and after Dieter fumbles and they have to dump the bodies to get away from the titans and he is sad it was all for nothing, Levi gives Dieter the Survey Corpse emblem and says he managed to collect it from Dieter's friend's body. But in reality, Levi collected Petra's emblem as a memory but decides to give it to Dieter and say it was his friends, thus "sacrificing" his memory of Petra to give Dieter some peace of mind

i always think about how it would feel to see the people i love most die to the titans and it breaks my heart. to leave their bodies behind </3 the levi squad getting wiped out is so upsetting too as the story reminds you of all the people who loved them, and the lives they had yet to experience. and it's worse cause maybe they would have survived if eren had just followed his gut, damn. the female titan crying is also really haunting

Levi has a good heart but clearly he's just a tired soul that has seen everything under the sun. That's why he can be very blunt and seem coldhearted.

I always interpreted it as Levi beating himself up over failing her. As Petra's father say, she was young, had a promising future, and had just resolved herself to give her all to Levi's squad. Failing this responsibility, especially when they all look up to you as their leader, it's especially painful

I love episode 22 because it really illustrates the gravity and weight behind the saying, "Heavy is the burden of command". The Scouts went through so much, and lost so many comrades, only to comeback to zero fanfare and in fact plenty of heavy criticism. Of which they have to just bare it all in a stoic manner and proceed on in a professional manner. P.S. Heads up, the last episode (25) of Season 1 has a rather important post credit scene. Watch need to watch the last episode past the credits.
