Oh god i was waiting for this upload all day, now i look terrible for catching it within a minute of uploading.

It’s timeeeee

GyufaMC

After 2000 years, it's finally here

Misa

Grisha saw Zeke through eren's future memories. That future sight is the ability of the attack titan, not the founding titan. We already knew this since season 3. The owl knew about armin and mikasa before they were born

Jennywocky

I went to Wash DC to Otakon today but I'll watch this in my hotel room later. I love these two episodes so much. Zeke gets his catharsis and Grisha’s character gets some amount of redemption.... but boy Eren, when you go, you go BIG, right???

Naiyt

The hug that Zeke deserved, but not the one he needs right now 😭

jab

I've been here since jojo part 1 reactions how far we've come

Erik Hink

The Attack Titan can send memories back into the past. Grisha was able to see Zeke only because he was seeing him through Eren's memories on this moment from the future.

Ethan Jacobs

Had this pre-typed so forgive me if you did actually notice this but something you should know right now is that this means the MOMENT Eren touched Historias hands way back, in that instant Eren witnessed every single attack titan’s memories. Also Eren is allowing Greisha to see Zeke through his eyes, the future. Theres more details I left out and will be revealed but that’s what you should know right now.

SophIsDumb

I remember reading this part and having my jaw wide open

Liam Milligan

There is something so beautifully and tragically ironic about someone as obsessed with freedom as Eren is being involved in a deterministic loop.

Garett

You can see from Frieda's expression that she really considered helping Grisha. But then the Vow's effects kicked in. The moment her eye color changed, it was the will of the king talking through her. And yeah, whenever Grisha spotted Zeke and Eren in this episode, he actually saw them from Eren's PoV. Meaning that bro several times randomly saw himself from third person perspective.

Smart Kaboose

The twist of 4x20 is, to this day, one of the most incredible pieces of writing I've experienced. The way eren bends down, grabs his father, and Grisha actually FUCKING MOVES AT HIS TOUCH, sends chills down my spine. I remember watching the scene and being at the edge of my seat, wondering if grisha could see eren the whole time or only glimpses, etc. Just wow!! The hug between zeke and his father is so sad and horrible because it is the harbinger of everything to come. Zeke finally gives in and accepts that he was wrong about everything. Eren was so obsessed with being free, he became a slave to freedom. Which isn’t free at all 😭

Yuribrained

"how far back does this go" yes.

Cisco

A slave to freedom

RCJ

Eren crouching & talking to his dad like that reminded me of Mikasa crouching & talking Eren into seeing Annie as the enemy same angle & evrything, or even like Armin in his creepy monologue to Berthold. Intentional or not I love that! 🔥

Misa

From this point on i think, eren stops calling them eldians, because those were the slavers, and calls them subjects of ymir instead

Ethan Jacobs

You’ll definitely have to rewatch ending at the end. There’s a story to it but you’ll have to wait and see😘. I’m being cryptic cause I don’t know if we should tell you yet😂

Jennywocky

Yes, Eren can control what his predecessors see -- Grisha says there were so many things he didn't know because Eren didn't show him. He didn't even know whether Carla was alive. And yeah, Frieda was speaking from the Vow. Their eyes turn purple when the Vow controls them. I think Grisha was getting through to Frieda, but then the Vow took over. The music in that episode was so stellar. Yamamoto outdid himself. Grisha becomes one of the most tragic AoT characters with this episode. What an amazing VA performance.

fundawn

Seeing Zeke cry when Eren agreed to join him and then again when Grisha apologized to him really makes me sad. Zeke really wanted a family and I wonder how much of his nihilistic ideology would be there if he had a normal childhood.

moonknight

6:08 Eren is looking at Zeke, standing behind Grisha. So it's a memory from Eren that was caught by Grisha

WaZeus

Got my popcorn ready for this one 😅 Also, you should definitely watch the Season 2 ED…all of this lore was in front of our faces the whole time.

Garett

Ultimately, the Owl was proven 100% right with Ymir's actual backstory. There was neither Ymir the Tyrant nor Ymir the Savior. All of this were just labels applied to the actual Ymir, a poor slave who never tasted freedom and even after getting all of this incredible power, she felt the need to serve the king. "For you, 2000 Years From Now" and "From me, 2000 Years Ago". From one slave who never thought she could be free, to another slave, who wasn't even aware of his own enslavement. Eren's tragedy is that his life was entirely deterministic and the moment he touched Historia's hand on the ceremony, the fate was sealed. But his determination at least moved Ymir to break free from her eternity of servitude. The backstory also shows that all the talk about Evil Titan Empire or the Devils was bullshit. War is something that will exist as long as humans do, Titans or not. Ultimately the Subjects of Ymir were just scapegoats and tools - because it was always the non-Shifters that were taking advantage of their power. What Marley did with their Warrior program was no different from how the first King Fritz used Ymir.

Jennywocky

As conflicted as we might be about Eren doing a full Rumbling, it's beautiful how he liberates Ymir. He's the only one who ever treated her as a person and tells her she is free to choose, and hugs her. Zeke keeps trying to force her to his will, treating her like a nobody, like a slave, it's horrific listening to him try to order her about. And when her eyes open, they are like Eren's angry eyes. He frees her, but she kind of led him here just for this very purpose.

Jennywocky

The first episode was indeed called, "To You, 2000 Years From Now." Yes, we know Ymir can shape Eldian bodies. It's not a bad guess to assume she could craft and steer Eren to one day save her... but isn't Eren "free"? Maybe not?

Brie&Apples

This is the point where I stop thinking of Eren as a person and only see him as a force of nature, mostly because this type of time travel breaks my brain and I can't form a proper thought about it.

Otaku Steph

These episodes were peak - I completely understand ur enthusiasm HAHA

Otaku Steph

WHAT A JOURNEY. Plot twist after plot twist

Otaku Steph

Oops did I say Founding Titan during the reaction? xD

Otaku Steph

Well frickin said, Kaboose. Slave to freedom is a perfect way to describe Eren 😞 Everything about this episode was phenomenal.

BC

"Griesha's taken over yours, Eren" Those of us that know...🤣 ^ This is what I commented on your reaction to Ep 14. During the scene where Eren claims Armin is being controlled by Bertholdt's memories and you thought Griesha's memories were influencing Eren. Now you know why. 🤣

Naiyt

I love how this is such a twist on normal time travel stuff. It's like the present and the past exist in sort of a closed loop - Eren and Zeke traveling through their memories doesn't change the past per se, but the timeline was influenced by Grisha's "memories" of them doing that in the future. The present and the past were interlinked and influence each other bidirectionally. But they can't CHANGE the events they lived in by doing this: the events they lived through in the past were already predetermined by the choices they made in the future. It reminds me of the short story "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate" by Ted Chiang. It gets really trippy when you think about it, and I see it as the Attack on Titan universe existing within a "block universe" theory of time.

Alex Jobson

the best 2 episodes in the show in my opinion, there’s so much to unpack i wouldn’t even know where to start.

Theophrastus Bombast

I hate that Eren, this vile creature, has just manipulated Ymir once more. He instrumentalized her trauma, nothing more. How is utilizing her power for this saving her in any way? Lashing out in anger isn't going to heal your trauma, it will only make you suffer more in the end. It's the same as his false ideal of "Freedom" which in reality has nothing to do with the concept of being Free at all. His freedom is nothing else than the complete domination of everything and everyone. Grisha really failed him just as much as he failed Zeke. But where he didn't love Zeke enough at the time, he loved Eren way too much. If he hadn't, he may have been able to resist his influence.

Alex Jobson

eren in season 1: “i’ll kill them all! i’ll wipe every last one of them… off the face of this earth!”

Jay rellim

im curious, from your pov how does ymir enabling the rumbling help her in any way? it doesnt seems he has resentment towards the entire world, especially non eldians bc they weren't the reason she suffered as a slave. i would imagine her freedom would be 'fuck it, im not making titans anymore for anyone'. but maybe i read her wrong and she does want millions to suffer alongside eren

ZeroSkill

I loved the "this is fucking terrifying at the same ti- 😐 Eren... where did you go?" at 32:10

lola

crazy to think that that "weird" outro from season 2 was actually foreshadowing all of this LMAO

oneshot2489

Exactly everyone had there moment where when eren was younger and he would falter or question his own abilities just for the ones around him to do the she exact thing he did to Grisha they all shaped eren into what he became.

Yu

I believe it's more that Ymir understands that as long as there are separate civilizations of people there will always be war, slavery and discrimination. By starting the rumbling, she's effectively making it so that the Eldians are the only people remaining and will not suffer the hate and suffering she did. Also, it's fairly clear that this was her own choice out of her own frustration against humanity. Eren allowed her to make the choice on what to do and she chose to start the rumbling with him. Instead of focusing on the obvious wrong that they are committing, it's important to understand that they do have a proper reason for it. I'm not saying mass murder is ever a good thing, but it's true that as long as other civilizations exist, so will war and hatred. As pixis said, fighting between humans will only stop when a single person remains.

NissanZaxima

The shock when you find out that all the Marley "propaganda" was actually very real haha. Also when you realize (you pointed it out as well) that Reiner was right when he said Eren is the last person who should have this power. If you go back in season 1 episode 3 or 4 (cant remember) they are training in the yard and Reiner hands Eren a wooden weapon and literally says "Here you play the bad guy next". The foreshadowing in this series is second to none.

oneshot2489

Completely disagree. He's doing what needs to be done to save the ones he loves. Borrowing the power ymir had because like her. he learned they were slaves to the entire worlds wishes. What does harvey dent say in the batman trilogy. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. And like the entire anime series. It's a tragedy.

oneshot2489

I mean 2000 years of suffering changes a mofo. Don't you think.

Jay rellim

yup but her face is giving “im angry at this shitty situation” and not really “im angry enough to murder the entire world except a select set of my lineage” so i was still shocked

Jorge S. Abdalla

Zeke: Eren, help me out. I wanna try out this local genocide… Eren: I'm gonna destroy the world

Maz

propaganda can be correct and wrong, propaganda is just weponizing media to bring up/down a thing and or person.

psy12

Why have these last couple sets of episodes been so PEAK? Eren: T-pose for aura/show of power and says, "MEAT AND BONES BUFFET! FOR THE CHARACTERS! FOR THE VIEWERS! EVEN FOR YMIR'S DAUGHTERS! FOR EVERYONE!" 🤣 A lot of it, for me, was that all those questions that we stewed on 5ever from S1-S3 are now being answered. All those grunts and screams from continued "to be continued" screens over and over and OVER planted lots of seeds that were watered from S1 to S3 and now they are finally growing and we get to eat the fruit (some of it rotten from the get go XD). Isayama knew what he was doing 😣🤯🤯😝

NissanZaxima

It's why I used quotations around it. They were telling the truth about the Eldians being completely shitty people in the past but obviously using it to help weaponize them in the current day.

Evan

The three episode run of 4x19,20, and 21 are genuine peak of the entire series and I have been so excited to see you react since you started AOT. Before it got review bombed on IMDb, e19 was rated 9.9/10 and both e20 and e21 were rated 10/10. Peak. Cinema. An AoT rewatch after seeing these two episodes will make you catch so many details the second time around. I’ve seen it so many times and still catch a ton of details. Thank you for posting your reactions.

Degenerick

if you go back to season3episode21, kreuger said those exact words to grisha that eren said. “this is your story, until death, even after death”

Victor

Title names of s1 ep1 and s4 ep21 are legendary

Theophrastus Bombast

It would be a tragedy, if Eren didn't have the ability to retroactively take action to avert it. But he could, instead he actively chose genocide. This is why I despise him. No matter where he came from, there is no justification for his actions.

Speedwagon

Ymir didnt do it. The parasite switched from Ymir (she probably gave up on it willingly to free herself) into Erens body and unlocked the full founding titans power in him. Thats how Eren could enable it himself. Its also why he can now use the coordinates to communicate to everyone.

Degenerick

the ED lyrics: “i’ll love you all, i’ll protect you all” steph: he gon kill everyone lol

vera

isayama is insaneeee. bro actually started this at 19 lol

Jennywocky

The look of anger in her eyes (which have been hidden so far) reminded me so much of Eren's look of rage. I think it's basically someone who has been downtrodden and run into the ground for 2000 years (which actually is a lot more than that in the Paths, it's a second and yet eons at once, it took her SO many years/centuries or more to build all of those titans in the wall + any other titans she's made even if outside the Paths they just appear -- there's been videos made about it).... and Eren said, "You have been wronged, it's not fair how you've been treated," and she is just seeing red finally, the victim who finally really lets her true feelings about her situation come to the surface. So yeah, sure, she'll hand over her power to Eren when he asks for it, the violence is part of the general rage she's finally acknowledged within herself over how she's been treated.

Julio Henderson

Shoutout Griesha for curing the virus that HE likely brought to the island

ChangoLife

Love you reaction!!! i love that ending so much T_T<3

Spade9th

Genocide is horrible and both zekes and erens solutions have terrible outcomes but the world wasn’t going to stop until they were wiped out. I honestly sympathize with eren cause having so much power with so little options is not something I think anyone would be able to control well

Kruger

How's that seatbelt and helmet? Big loops here for sure, but hold on - the ride isn't nearly over - It just Keeps Moving Forward!!! Do NOT run low on tissues!

Alex L

i never realized that grisha said his wife, son AND daughter live there. even after all this time you notice something you miss

Juanpa_20

Eren literally said I will destroy the world after he defeated Annie 🤣 you can go back and see it

2Y

Dont feel bad for crying, its nice being able to relate to someone so empathetic.

Gray Matters

The first episode was "To you, 1000 years in the future"

dysprosium99

firstoff, easily the greatest piece of fictional storytelling imo. some things to note here r, everytime Grisha sees zeke, eren is directly standing behind him, which implies there isnt zeke physically when that timeline took place but the future eren is been sending his memories back into the past for grisha to see zeke. in the last scene, grisha is in reality just hugging the air, but also hugging zeke in his head. which is also the case in the chapel, Rod and Frieda dont see eren what they see is Grisha hesitating then fighting his inner demons (eren) and making up his mind. Rod also said this in S3 that grisha was the one to do it. this episode really flips the perspective of all three jaegars. also, u said that eren has been the mastermind all throughout, technically that is right and wrng. it is wrng because its not technically eren- the the Deadly combo of being the weilder of both the Attack Titan and Founding Titan. attack titan especially is the master puppeteer. another key detail to know here is, back in S4 episode say 10 or 11, eren looks into a mirror and says “fight”. that is future eren sending memories of his face saying fight, to his future self or younger self. could be even to grisha and perhaps the owl as well. commanding everyone to keep moving forward. also, Willy Tybur was 100% right.

MJ

So the pig that was let out of the pen, that was supposed to be Eren. From 2,000 years to you (I think). Ymir releasing the pig was the catalyst for everything, 2,000 years ago. She freed the pig, and in return, eren freed her. If she didn’t commit that one act of rebellion as a slave, none of this would have happened. She never would’ve been blamed, and ran off into the tree and discovered the power of the titans. Things would’ve continued. Absolutely beautiful writing 😭

N

Armin yell because it's really loud and both Armin and Mikasa can't really hear each other well at that moment. That's why Mikasa try to lean in to listen what Armin is saying.

N

Also yes , Reiner and Jeanne were right all along about Eren.

Drift3r

In regards to the conversation Eren had with Zeke back in Marley. Recall how he talked about the fact that he felt disgusted by his father in recalling how he killed the royal family. However what Eren didn't tell Zeke is the reason why he felt disgusted by Grisha and that's because he had to talk Grisha into doing it in the first place. That is the root of his disgust toward Grisha.

Drift3r

True, Big Bad Grisha viewed Mikasa like his own daughter and not just an adopted orphan.

Christian Mendoza

Outro says everything about Eren. I will always stand by Eren's decisions. And no, Im not a Jaegerist by all means just cuz I choose to stand by Eren. Here comes the Rumbling!

Momo Lilya

Still a piece of shit.

Steven

Good thing is you haven’t even gotten to the actual plot twist

jab

by the way even if every country had anti titan artilery they still would not be able to do anything since the wall titans are about a few million

Orapac

Grishas VA did such a great job here. Also you gotta love the fact that Eren influenced that past to bully his father to get him tot he point Eren could bully his father. And it turns out he takes the Lord Farquad approach to keeping his home and friends safe when it comes to everyone else int he world. "Some of you may day, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make."

jeffery

i think im missing something. Where is episode 22-23?

Jair Navas

One thing, not sure if this was said or if this is even true. But I like to think that Zeke actually broke the connection in order to stop Eren from doing anything else. In the next episode, he says we haven't even gotten to the part where I eat Dad. I don't think he would say this if he was the one that broke it.
