AOT is finally over and I don't know how to feel 😭 I'VE NEVER CRIED SO MUCH IN MY LIFE. THAT WAS SO HEAVY.

I'd really love to hear your thoughts on the ending of AOT or just the film overall.

It was a lot for me to take in and I tried not to pause as much midway through due to the momentum (and being overwhelmed lmfaoo) - I'M MENTALLY EXHAUSTED HAHA. I'M TOO MUCH OF AN EMPATH.

Whether you've been here from the start or have just joined recently, thank you for experiencing this beautiful anime alongside me. Definitely going down as my top 3 and I can't wait to rewatch it in the future :))

Happy to have gone on this journey with you. Thanks for the amazing reactions and intuitive takes! Looking forward to see what you react to next.

Conman

Thanks for reviewing this series your input and dialog were appreciated and I'm glad you loved this masterpiece ❤️

Smart Kaboose

WOOOHOOOO YEAHHHHH The rewatch in the future will be so good :) it seriously gets better with subsequent watches

Jennywocky

WOOO IT'S here!!! Gonna watch your reaction, but yeah -- I loved the entire ending myself, so many arcs went right where they needed to go! Last two comments before I come back later: - Splinter Wolf air drop is total peak. - Hange's farewell is the most Hange that Hange has ever Hange'd. I mean, it was 110% perfect Hange -- I'm smiling and crying at once. - Oh fine here's a third comment -- Armin 'n Annie 4ever!

Misa

I'm pretty neutral on the ending; I think it's almost an impossible task to write a satisfying ending for something like this :D I've definitely seen endings far worse, too

moonknight

0:34 this was actually in the first chapter of the manga and was supposed to be in the first episode, but it was never adapted for some reason

Theo

I’m unfortunately unsubscribing now, have you ever thought about reacting to non anime shows?

Ethan Jacobs

There’s so much I want to write but so little space to do it. So in the end Eren did all this to push away his friends so he could save their lives. All the distancing and pretend hate. It was always from a heart of love (tho f’d up means, also he went insane) It’s genuinely a beautiful story in such a horrible situation. Ultimately it’s a selfish and inhumane choice but it makes you think in the grand scheme does it matter if it happens anyway? I think it does but it’s a heavy question Also Eren and Mikasa are confirmed to live out their entire life with eachother in their “flashback dream thing”. Which is why Mikasa is finally ready to kill Eren as she got the life she dreamed of. If you rewatch the EDs, two of them are actually love letters from Eren to Mikasa and vice versa. Very beautiful stuff from Isayama. Also the ending has little secrets you might’ve missed. NO MIKASA DOESNT GET WITH JEAN (ultimately yes it is up for interpretation). When they lay flowers at Erens tomb the type and number flowers symbolizes a person in who loved but never got to express it. And on the flip side when they lay flowers on Mikasa, those type of flowers symbolize a person who remained pure and celibate for a loved one they lost in life. They put those type of flowers and number for a reason.

SophIsDumb

Fuck I cried again to hange scene 😔

The Fastwing

LETS GOOOOOOO!!! Don't have any snacks so im eating garlic bread.

Otaku Steph

Thank you v much for being here!! MORE ANIME COMING YAAHOOO

Otaku Steph

Thank u so much, Crox!! It’s been such a pleasure connecting with u all over this peak anime 🥹

Otaku Steph

HAHAHAHA LFG, JENNY!! Excited to hear ur thoughts when you’ve watched it :))

Otaku Steph

Yeah agreed! It wasn’t necessarily a ‘happy’ one, but I think it’s pretty damn realistic at the same time

Otaku Steph

I was very confused when he was like “WE RAN AWAY TOGETHER” but this dreamlike sequence makes sense. How tragic at the same time 😞 AHH OK HAHA thanks for clarifying! I had assumed the two figures at the end at the gravestone WERE Jean and Mikasa. Shows that she wasn’t able to love anyone else as much as Eren, which is depressing, but also what he had hoped for. Sigh, what a journey and my heart genuinely breaks for them.

Otaku Steph

I’VE GOT SOME SPARE TISSUES FOR U, SOPH FMLLLLLLLL

Otaku Steph

ZAYUUUM now I’m craving garlic bread myself LMFAO

SophIsDumb

I’m surprised you have any left 😭

Smart Kaboose

Floch hanging onto the ship the entire way there to get one more "fuck you" is the ONLY time I will hand it to him 😂😂 he chose to be evil, and he went all in on it

Jayden Rosendale

When the crew is saying goodbye to Annie you can see Levi giving her the stink eye, it shows that he never forgot what she did to Levi Squad

Smart Kaboose

HIS NAME WAS FALCO THE WHOLE TIME LMAOOOO HAHAAHAHAH

Theo

The dialogue between armin and zeke in the paths is my favorite aot scene

Alice

Im personally not really a fan of the ending or some characters development but its still one of the greatest animes ever and in the end many people liked the happy endings for many characters and it was really cute seeing them, it was great watching all your reactions and insights throught it all!

Plataras

If I started yapping about everything I like and think about this series, this comment would be 3 pages long! Glad I saw this again from start to finish with your reactions!! :D Thank you for delivering Steph!!! You are awsome!!

"Random lady giving birth" ... that was Historia

m1siur

There’s actually a small detail in the manga that wasn’t included in the anime. In the very first chapter, after Eren wakes up from his dream, he looks at Mikasa and asks: “Mikasa… when did your hair get so long?” That line was completely removed from the anime. At first, it seems kinda random, since Mikasa already has long hair. But the Mikasa Eren sees in his dream has short hair, and she says, “See you later, Eren.” At the end of the story, Mikasa says the same thing before killing him, which makes that first scene feel completely different. And there’s a theory that makes it even crazier. The idea is that Eren, right before his death, somehow sent fragments of his memories back to his younger self — including parts of the Rumbling and what was going to happen. That would explain why young Eren wakes up crying without knowing why, and why he’s confused by Mikasa’s long hair. He could’ve been seeing fragments of his own future without understanding what they meant. The saddest part is that this might have been Eren’s final attempt to change his own fate. Maybe he hoped that if his younger self saw even a glimpse of what was coming, he would choose a different path and never start the Rumbling. But that’s where the whole idea of fate in AOT comes in. Even if Eren could see parts of the future, knowing what was going to happen didn’t mean he could change it. Every choice he made still led him toward the same ending. So Eren spent his entire life chasing freedom, while possibly being trapped by his own future the whole time. And if this theory is true, that random question about Mikasa’s hair in Chapter 1 wasn’t random at all — it could’ve been Eren’s final attempt to escape the future he would eventually create himself.

Alex Jobson

that song at the end is sung by both eren and mikasa’s VA’s yes

SophIsDumb

I want to point it out that the credits scenes with all the bombing is like hundreds of years in the future so they bought a hell of a lot of time, the manga did a really shitty job at this as the buildings are all like regular apartment building instead of these mega skyscrapers

Degenerick

yeah wit fucked up the first scene with eren and mikasa. in the first chapter of the manga thats what eren saw in his dream before waking up. mappa had to add it here instead

Ethan Jacobs

Ending 1 and 7 I believe are also (not sung) but written as love letters to each other.

m1siur

There’s also something about Eren’s conversation with Ramzi that hits way harder after the ending. When Eren tells him that he was disappointed when he found out humanity was still alive outside the walls, I think that says a lot more about the Rumbling than it seems at first. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he confesses all of this to Ramzi. Ramzi doesn’t understand his language, so Eren can basically say everything that’s really going through his head, knowing that Ramzi won’t understand a word of it. The outside world was supposed to be what Eren had dreamed about ever since Armin showed him that book — this unknown world that, to him, represented freedom. And when he finally reached it, it was nothing like what he had imagined. That’s why the Rumbling wasn’t just about protecting Paradis or his friends. Eren admits that part of him genuinely wanted to wipe everything away, and he completely breaks down while saying it because he knows how fucked up that desire is. And this makes the “Freedom” scene so much more disturbing. During the Rumbling, Eren suddenly sees himself as a child again, flying above what looks like an endless sea of clouds. He stretches out his arms, looks at the world in front of him and says: “Freedom.” For a moment, he’s literally seeing the world the way he always dreamed about it as a kid — endless, unexplored, with nothing standing in his way. But those aren’t really clouds beneath him. It’s the steam coming from millions of Colossal Titans while they’re crushing the world below. And I think that’s what makes the scene so fucked up. Eren finally reaches the freedom he’s been chasing since the beginning of the story, but he can only see it by turning himself back into that innocent kid and ignoring what’s actually happening beneath him. The world finally looks like the empty, untouched world he dreamed about. Because he’s literally destroying everything that was already there. So Eren’s happiest and most “free” moment is happening at the exact same time as millions of people are losing their lives and their freedom because of him. That’s what makes the scene so tragic — Eren finally gets to see his dream, but only because he turned the real world into it.

Adams

Ow they added a post credit with the trio i didnt see it when the show aired in 2023 was actually fun. Well Isayama initially wanted to kill of everyone but changed his mind in 2013 and when he published the ending it basically ended after Erens death and the aftermath but then he added later everything that was in the post credits (Mikasa life, the future etc...)

alex leiva

Good end for our Journey!

m1siur

One thing I really like about Eren’s character is that he didn’t actually change as much as it seems. Especially in season 4, it feels like he became a completely different person, but he was always like this. Even as a kid, his mindset was basically: if someone tries to take away my freedom, I’ll take away theirs. The difference is that later he finally had the power to take that mindset to its absolute extreme. So in a way, Eren didn’t really change throughout the story. We just slowly discovered who he had always been.

Theophrastus Bombast

I hate Eren with a burning passion. Honestly, holding back with this opinion for most of this reaction was, at times, pretty difficult. He is a very well written character, and my hatred is testament to that. But my god, what a moron he is. And what a weird Incel-y take that he stalks Mikasa from beyond the grave? I am fine with the ending, It's probably even too optimistic in it's outcome? I don't think continued existence would be on the map for Paradis at all after this. Especially since it's clear that the "heroes" took action against the will of the Jaegerists.

Smart Kaboose

OMFG I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING WHEN I FIRST SAW IT! THEY ABSILUTELY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE GOING TO KISS ARMIN AND EREN SHOULD HAVE KISSED LMAOOOO

Naiyt

omg it's here, can't wait to watch! Thank you for going on this journey with us! > I'M TOO MUCH OF AN EMPATH. That's one of the reasons we love watching your reactions and hearing your breakdowns, because you're really great at empathizing!

Naiyt

The Reiner roller coaster is so real. Started out loving his character, moved to HATING him, then ending with him being my #1 favorite character in the show.

Jennywocky

Sooo…. this is the “corrected” ending (I just checked the manga, Colossal edition) because I think Isayama was burned out and rushing to make publication with his manga ending. In the manga, Armin sounded a bit more flippant about Eren killing 80% of humanity, since it was unavoidable, and Armin kind of just acknowledges that "Eren was a mass murderer for our sakes, and I'll try to use this opportunity productively" [paraphrase, not literal]. However, this sounds kind of like brushing off genocide, so here Isayama and MAPPA revised it to Armin recognizing they both deserved to go to hell for what they did jointly, and that’s why it ends with them both promising to spend eternity together in hell. Also, from recent comments he's made, Isayama has been second-guessing himself and never wanted to make Eren heroic by the end, he was supposed to be a villain, and thus seemed to feel bad that some fans thought the ending excused genocide in some way. (I see a lot of "Eren did nothing wrong" comments.) I think the anime ending does a good of mix of humanizing Eren without excusing him, though.

Noor ⚢

I had to take a 56 minute break crying over Hange's death again dammit! Also, I am not sure if I'm the only one (maybe others here aren't lesbian and didn't care as much), but I also was incredibly sad when the scenes of "what happened after" came up and Historia was living happily on the farm with her random unknown man like damn that should've been ymir :( All in all, wonderful journey this has been, thank you again steph you never fail to get me to rewatch my favorite anime, I probably won't be back on patreon for a while because I am going through a rough period of my life, but I am surely going to be back and until then, I wish you all the joy in the world and that your heart may be content :)

m1siur

Really enjoyed your AOT reactions, you noticed so many small details that I’ve seen other reactors completely miss 😭 made it really fun to watch

Jennywocky

ROFLMAO. Okay, maybe that's one of the outtakes. :D

Elijah K Javillonar

First time i watched this, only thing i could say was, "Okay lord Founder, you wipe my memories now"

Jennywocky

Okay, so I see a comment or two about Jean and Mikasa. Lol. The shippers will ship, the naysayers will naysay. Just earlier this year, one of the Descriptive Audios for this film specifically stated that that it IS Jean in the image, and thus he and Mikasa had a family. It’s “semi-official” but not really from Isayama directly, so not actually “official” – but it just keeps the arguments going. :D In the long run, I look at it this way: Mikasa will always love Eren. I can totally believe she’d want to be buried next to Eren, even if she did raise a family and marry another. But it's also just like people getting remarried after losing a spouse. My grandfather remarried a widow after my grandmother died, and the two of them were dear friends, but they were both buried upon death with their first spouses. Eren is essentially Mikasa's first love and original spouse. We know that Jean loved Mikasa deeply, and he has been with Mikasa every step of the way, and they have both shared formative life-long experiences, and both were also close to Eren. So if Mikasa chose to spend her life with Jean, she deserves that and so does he; and they could build a happy life together to make up for their young hellish years; and I doubt Jean would begrudge Mikasa from resting next to Eren, because he got to spend his LIFE with her. That’s all he ever really wanted. So …. If they did get together, then bless them both. We all know Mikasa’s love for Eren runs deepest and strongest no matter who she ever got with. People are so intense on this topic, but … give Mikasa a chance for some peace and joy, right -- whatever she wants to do? She deserves it. I mean, god -- she sacrificed everything to save the world and free the man she loved. And Jean's also on the short list of People Who Deserve All the Good Things. EDIT: I think this is the picture from the manga that started all the original conjecture (people argue about who this is too).... https://preview.redd.it/did-mikasa-really-marry-jean-in-the-end-v0-bjwl87cg5jyb1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=7df9c9dd059f0227b53e61c0f535adda26da9637

Jennywocky

Soooo --- wonderful reaction!! You always totally engage the story, I love that so much. And you caught SO much on your first pass, based on my first pass + watching another reactor or two. You tend to catch every detail very quickly. (Heck, you even commented on how Hange and Jean were compassionate to Floch despite him shooting up their gas tank and just being a Total Pain in the Ass.) Weirdly, I consider this a “happy ending,” in the most realistic sense. After all, NONE of our heroes (after Hange) died in the Battle of Heaven and Earth, Annie and the kids came back to save the day, and everyone got what they wanted (mainly, being normal AND seeing their families). Connie even got his mom back. And they realized Eren had actually talked to each of them before the final battle -- he just blocked their memories of it until he was dead. So he wasn't actually as much of a jerk as he'd seemed. Meanwhile, Eren even gave Mikasa peace of mind – she kept thinking “What if [I had told Eren I loved him that night]? Would we have had a happy future?” and so she got to live out the “best case scenario” for that fantasy out in the Paths before coming back to release Eren. So she no longer has to blame herself or wonder “What might have been?” Soooo…. Mikasa freed Ymir by showing her that loving someone and obeying them are NOT the same thing – because Mikasa loved Eren but had to kill him to stop the genocide, and this actually freed both him and the world. Ymir herself had always been free to leave when she died but didn’t realize it -- as a slave, she had conflated love (or whatever she felt towards Fritz) and obedience. Losing the comfort of her kids, she instead searches for connection in the Paths to replace it. I do love how we only see her as a child in the Paths, despite her dying as a grown woman and mother, and when Mikasa frees her, she regains her autonomous adult self. Eren didn’t quite understand what choice Mikasa had to make – he just knew he had to keep “moving forward” until she made it. Eren’s series of confessions to Armin humanize him deeply. We find out that not only was his brain fried from his memories blurring together (and he had to even kill his own mother and bootstrap himself into the time loop), but he also tried to change things and just… couldn’t. Hence, “moving forward” to get Mikasa to the end. We also realize he was a huge mix of emotions. He was a slave to freedom. He didn’t want to hurt Mikasa but also agonized over losing her. Despite no one else (including Armin and Hange) coming up with an alternative, he called himself a garden-variety idiot because violence was the best answer he could come up with, even it if grieved him. And, deep down, part of him yet wanted to watch the world burn. I think these are all a variety of human feelings and emotions, just most of us don’t possess power enough that we can make awful decisions that hurt millions of people, although some of us at times do manage to hurt people in our circles of influence. I don’t know how I feel about Eren altogether, because he did what he did and that was awful, but we do understand a lot of the things he felt and thought that led him through that, and we either can relate to some of it or not. Sooo… Armin. He has always hated himself for being physically more frail than his friends. (Even Eren beats him up!) Now he’s stuck immobilized in the okapi’s mouth. The thing is, once he gets past that, Armin does what he DOES do best: He uses his brain to figure out where he is, and then he sits down with Zeke and engages him with empathy and kindness and vulnerability. If anyone else had been talking to Zeke, the mission would have failed. It succeeded because Armin helped Zeke realize the value of life, even if you can’t put a price tag or some other quantitative value on it. And then Zeke mobilized all the other titans they loved, who turned the tide for the Scouts. Armin achieves victory by …. being Armin, physical frailties and all. And it was touching how Zeke sacrifices himself to Levi's blade, while wishing he could enjoy the day more -- the moment he began to value it, he realized he had to give it away -- just like Armin was saying all along. (If you can't sacrifice it, it wasn't worth keeping.) So Muller at the end DID want peace, but it was terrifying for him to see all of those Eldians turn into actual titans just a few moments before, surrounding him. It shows you that human frailty and fear sometimes gets the best of us… EVEN WHEN WE KNOW BETTER. Let’s expand that to the endless cycle of human violence. Even The Lord of the Rings acknowledges we are responsible for defeating evil in our time, while the future belongs to the people who exist there. Each age must fashion its own peace. And that’s what happens here. Eren resets much of the war cycle, and there IS some level of peace for a time… but we see eventually that Paradis is destroyed in a futuristic war. But amid the ruins, peace again exists, and new waves of humanity will be born who will cycle through both peace and war. So let’s do what we can with the years we are given, understanding that we can’t promise peace forever – we can only work towards peace in our time. The future needs to take care of itself. I think my biggest gripe with the plotting is just that all Historia did after mid-point S3 was ... have a baby. And also try to dissuade Eren from destroying everything, but mostly... having a baby. We don't even know if she loved the man she was with. Well, that was long. Sorry! I hope I wasn’t too far off and/or wasn’t boring. I just love this show so much, and there’s so much to think about and discuss, so I love that you were so engrossed in it and found it so moving as well. I joined your membership but late BUT just in to catch the last battle of Shiganshina, Zeke and Eren going down memory lane, and everything that followed -- so ... some of the best parts of this show. :)

Jennywocky

I know, I'm like "Tattoo FALCON on his forehead, why dontcha???"

Jamison Fawkes

Reminder that this is my first time watching AOT : 2:26:46 Is it not the same situation from right after we saw Eren Transformed back at Shiganshina, with all guns pointed on him ?

Jennywocky

I'm mostly straight, but I'm really sad too about Historia not being with Ymir and wanted them together. We barely know anything about who Historia is with either -- was it all duty for her, or has she found any kind of love in that life?

Jennywocky

srsly, right?! Also, he basically took the worst beating of any of the characters, yet he never ever gave up.

Johnny Ocampo

The final ending song for the series is titled "To You 2,000... or... 20,000 Years From Now..." and it is indeed sung by Yui Ishikawa and Yuki Kaji (The VA’s for Mikasa and Eren) as well as Linked Horizon, the band who did the first three OP’s for AOT in a full circle moment. I love it and it’s lyrics and I think they fit the endings message perfectly. A cautionary warning to those in the future the reflects Ymir’s own message to Eren and Mikasa 2,000 years down the line, only now it’s Eren warning us the viewer 20,000 years into the future. A lot of people tend to believe Eren ultimately died for nothing given Paradis destruction but looking at it from his perspective he succeeded. Mikasa grew old and died a peaceful life and it’s not a stretch to assume the rest of his friends did as well. He never did believe he could stop all conflicts, So his ultimate goal of protecting his friends was achieved. The last few lyrics of the song highlight that conflict will never end. The cycle continues over and over because humanity is just so stubborn and unable to look the other way as conflict begets more conflict. And although it may appear to be a very grim ending with seemingly the power of the Titans being rediscovered by the young person, and the story starting all over again, the song leaves us with this message. No matter how many times humanity may be destroyed, it will always persist. Life will begin anew. It will always find a way. And while yes that cycle may continue, the song asks us “What did you learn?” What did you learn from this story? What will you do differently? Will it be the same story? Maybe. It’s a cautionary message from Eren, as in the full version of the song it ends with Yuki Kaji saying the songs title. In that way it is open to interpretation what happens to this person as he stumbles into the tree, leaving just a little bit of hope that they have learned form the previous cycles, or perhaps doomed to repeat them. It all comes down to how optimistic the viewer is.

Fer

WORTH IT ! Every single penny ! Love knowing how AOT created such a big family 🫰

Jamison Fawkes

When the ending started playing, I was full of a lot of sad but happy emotions, I think I'm also too much of an empath haha 😅🥲

Spade9th

i dont think mikasa moved on because of the scarf. Even if she ended up with Jean I think she still held on to eren. i think the ending is bittersweet because eren did allow them to live a long life, grow old and die. It was after Mikasa died and 100+ years had passed that Paradise got erased by war repeating itself all over again. That's just my take on it though still my favorite show oat after like the 6th rewatch

MrGuy3000

A lot of that stuff in the first chapter is actually insane foreshadowing that wasn’t in the anime simply because they had no idea how deep isayama went with this. Like grisha looking at future eren in the first chapter when showing the key, that isn’t in the first ep

Spade9th

Steph you are goated. Loved every moment of watching this anime with you.

Naiyt

1:14:21 "this is why it's Pieck fiction!" omfg I died 😂

RisePhx

I don’t normally have much of an opinion on this type of thing but I ship Annie and Armin so hard. I imagine they grew old, happy together. Anyway, I joined during this series and loved the commentary and being here for this journey. I haven’t watched much anime other than AoT but I’m looking forward to sticking around and watching shows for the first time with the community!

forthewolfx

I don't know if anything will ever replace AoT as my fav show ever. Loved rewatching it with your reactions!

SophIsDumb

No matter how much he wanted to just die too! :p I’m always the happiest about him surviving

Drift3r

I enjoyed the anime ending. The manga ending is slightly different. The main complaint some people had with manga ending stems from people saying that Armin's dialogue came off as if he agreed with Eren's decision to wipe out the world. Whereas some people who don't like the anime ending are probably those who enjoyed the manga ending. In the end, it doesn't matter because the anime ending had a "good" ending in my opinion and I have zero regrets over watching 4 seasons of AoT. I could careless what the negative types have to say. I 100% enjoyed AoT.

Drift3r

Even if she got married with Jean, or some other guy, she was NEVER going to forget Eren. Armin was right. How could she? That's just impossible. So her having the scarf when she passes away makes 100% sense. Eren was had a massive influence in her life.

jab

mikasa ova next

Juanpa_20

I honestly don’t understand why they had to drag him a lil longer bro should’ve died the min gabi clocked his ass😂

Juanpa_20

I genuinely think your a basement dweller and a larper at best lol

lola

i like how we all thought that armin and eren were gonna kiss

Hannah

Loved the reaction! It’s been so fun to go on this journey with you! So here is my long-winded interpretation of the ending and of how I personally see Eren's freedoms and motivations. It might defer from others. Eren's true goal in AOT was to fulfill his personal vision of freedom: an empty world, free of humanity beyond the Walls. Ever since seeing Armin's book in season 1, Eren dreamed of a vast, unexplored world - one that symbolized liberation from the confines of his life. When he discovered humanity did exist beyond the Walls (and that they were hostile) he became disillusioned. His ideal of freedom was shattered, replaced by a desire to wipe away everything that contradicted it in order to create a vast, unexplored world. This is unlike Armin whose dream was more of curiosity rather than being uncaged. This is why Eren breaks down to the kid Ramzi, admitting the Rumbling wasn't just to protect Paradis, it was something he wanted. A partial Rumbling could've sufficed strategically, but a full-scale one served his deeper wish: to erase a world that disappointed him. Eren's desire for freedom wasn't primarily about noble causes like saving his friends on Paradis or freeing Ymir and getting rid of Titans - those were secondary. Eren's motivations are like a layered onion, and at its core, the Rumbling was a selfish act to realize a childlike dream of absolute freedom. Like Reiner, who masked his selfish dream of becoming a hero behind a noble mission of "saving the world", (per their conversation in the cellar) Eren hid behind causes like protecting his friends or defending Eldia. He even admits to being the same as Reiner. Both were driven by personal motives but used justifications to cope with guilt. In the end, Eren doesn't claim to have a master plan. He openly tells Armin in the paths that he doesn't know why he did it, only that he wanted to. This confession, paired with Grisha's "You are free," shows that Eren was always a slave to his nature, aka: his obsession with freedom, no matter the cost. His downfall wasn't fate, it was his inability to let go of that desire, even when it meant mass genocide. Despite his actions, Eren is a tragic figure. He loved Mikasa and his friends, but ultimately couldn't prioritize his relationships with them over his true dream of freedom. That’s what I think. And for me, I find this really interesting to think about character-wise and makes the story much richer. I believe there’s a whole YouTube video out there that dives deeper into this idea!

BC

I've watched the anime and reactions quite a few times, but this is the first time I noticed a particular thing. In S4 Ep.19, after Gabi shoots Eren and all kinds of "memories" are flashing across the screen, there is a glimpse of Armin and Mikasa in their after credit outfits.

Only Scrubs

And there we have it folks. Steph has officially given her heart (and many tears) to the series. It was a wonderful ride with fantastic reactions. Worth every penny.

ChangoLife

Thanks for your reactions! Thanks for sticking with us this far; I'll definitely keep going for another couple of months if you react to the anime you mentioned in the polls. We love you! <3

Fantan

Amazing reaction, this journey was amazing, I do love your perspective on it. The truth of what makes this anime so good is there is so many interpretations of the anime.

KimDokJa

I wonder if somebody said that already, but on Erens grave, its written "Rest in peace, my only and most beloved" and its spelled like "Anata" meaning a "husband". And there is no name on the grave so that people who still blame Eren for killing people in paradise by crushing the wall wouldnt vandalize it.

Ryan

In my interpretation, the reason why Eren couldn’t change anything and why his motivations seem contradictory is because saving his friends, saving the island, in actuality are partly just excuses. A way to cope, that his actions really were noble. He admits that when he points out how he still got Sasha and Hange killed. Flattening the earth, wiping it clean, creating the free world he imagined as a kid is what his true deepest desire was. And even though he knows it’s wrong to feel that way, and as much as he “tried” to change the outcome, he couldn’t erase that feeling. Whether that be because of his immaturity, selfishness, idiocy, he was a slave to that feeling, a “slave to freedom”.

Simontdk1

Regarding the "change" in ending. Its 99% the same as the manga ending. The only thing Isayama changed in the anime was the dialogue between Armin and Eren at the end. At the End Isayama wanted Armin to feel sympathy for Eren and lessens his burden and guilt. So he takes the blame with Eren (in the anime) by saying its also his fault since Armin showed Eren the book that movitated Eren to aspire freedom and thanked Eren for showing him the outside world. In the original Manga, Armin also wanted to take the blame and lessens Erens guilt but he said "thanks for becoming a murder for our sake" despite Isayamas intention being the same (Armin trying to take the blame with Eren so he isnt alone) but a lot of Manga fans were ipset about that dialogue choice, so the anime changed it so the intention was still the same but wording is better. Also a small change from the manga. In the manga when Paradis got bombed at the end the houses still looked kinda mordern so fans felt Erens sacrifice didnt do anything. In the anime they show paradis had developed into a futuristic cyberpunk looking city before they got bombed. Which implied there was at least peace for centuries before they got attacked.

ahhhh it's been a journey!!😭😭 thanks for watching peak and giving us your awesome analysis (: (also not sure if it’s just me but there’s a bit of distortion or something with the microphone at the end of your sentences, though it isn’t too bad)

DanTheMan

One fanbase side tells you to analyze frame-by-frame and zoom on every pixel for proof and the other tells you to count the flowers and research their meaning. You can pick whichever, it’s never stated officially lol

Ethan Jacobs

Yeh it’s up to interpretation ultimately just like it says in the end credits it’s just insanely likely that the flowers that tell a specific story are more likely than a single frame of her next to someone.

DanTheMan

1:08:40 Right here I remember it being a big deal they showed Ymir(Founder) actually freeing the pigs but you knew she was guilty all along? Author even gave Ymir(Jaw) being pointed/blamed at in her childhood as a parallel to throw people off.

oh to be Steph and finish aot without having to wait through your middleschool, highschool and partially university years

Never confirm, but most likely Mikasa and Jeanne got married together. or at the very least became very close friend. Giving some credit to Yelena , I have to agree with her. Compare to what Eren did , Zeke plan just looks way better. Not saying it's the right choice, but it doesn't involve the rest of humanity getting killed. Eren is still pretty much the character I hate the most in this show since the beginning. By the end, "having no choice" is just a nonsense thing he said to himself. The reason he can't change anything is because that's exactly what he want to do. At the end of the day , the person who decide to kill everyone is still him [or rather his future him, which mean after everything he witness and learn along the way , he doesn't change one bit]. With insane godlike power, there's likely other choices he could have made. But he just went 'nah , I'm going to kill everyone'. He even admits that he would kill everyone but because the main cast stop him, 20% of humanity manage to remain. The change in the end doesn't really change much, in the manga ... Eren said he doesn't know why he did what he did [which make me hate him even more , like what do you mean ... you don't just commit genocide and said ... nah , I don't really know why I do this]. But in the anime, Eren admit it that the result of his decision is because he's fucking incredibly stupid and this is the result of his stupidity. He can't change anything and end up with massacre is because he wants to do this and because he's stupid. He doesn't change and doesn't grow up at all from start to finish. Just like when he killed the bandits when he was still a child. He learned along the way that not everyone outside the wall is a bad people or evil. And yet he's still , "nah, my freedom". I'm not saying Eren doesn't at least feel bad for doing the rumbling. But at the end of day, despite all of that ... he still did it because he wanted to do it. The land outside the wall full of people living ... is just not what he wants. Also in the end, it's not even Eren that end the Titan and 'save humanity and friend'. It's actually because of Mikasa decide to kill Eren. Ymir witness this, so she's able to let go of King Fritz and move on ... ending the power of Titan Also let it be known that Hange stayed behind and died because of Floch ... never forget that. IMO, his determination is not something to be praised for when said determination is killing other people for no good reason.

Gotta start off this by saying, thanks for taking us on this journey! It's been an amazing ride so far! For those who haven't seen this vid yet: Spoilers below. - On the matter of the ending being "realistic," or not very "satisfying," I agree. I loved the ending, but that's because it wasn't satisfying. I'm glad they didn't try to go the route of "Eren solved hatred til the heat death of the universe." It adds a lot of depth to the universe of AoT that no one person or ideal was able to unite the world forever. In a weird way, that'd be invalidating the whole "no one is in the wrong, everyone has their own lived experience" that we got so much of at the start of S4. Otherwise, we'd know there was an objectively correct ideology. - Moving on to Ymir and Mikasa, this is something I only picked up this time watching the end. They're following the same paths and history as well. They both love a man who is not capable of returning that love and S4 Eren is VERY similar to Fritz when you look at how he treats Mikasa (at least until he can be real to his friends in the Paths). Ymir thought this whole time that if she stood against Fritz it meant that she couldn't love him, but she saw with Mikasa (hence the brief imagery with a speared Fritz) that she didn't need to choose between her beliefs and her love. I do wish Mikasa had moved on after Eren's death, but the fact she is buried in white and next to Eren says it's very unlikely. - Eren's motivations were a little confusing, because the Founder's power does that, but it does make a little bit of sense when you break it into 2 things. The 1st thing being that he had his friends be the one to kill him to make them heroes. The 2nd thing being that he wanted to do the rumbling because that's all he could do to make sure they had long, happy lives. While in the paths, he tells Armin the 1st thing when they're both kids. He tells Armin the 2nd thing when he's an adult and more mature and they can both understand better how much weight and responsibility it is to hear "I killed 80% of humanity for you."

My theory is that Jean (Paradis Horseface) got together with Piek (Marley Horseface) 🤣

What a ride. This got a ton of backlash when it released (manga as well). Lot of crazy toxicity towards Isayama from “fans”. I’ve got mixed feelings about the ending/final episode myself, but it doesn’t discount the amazing story Isayama created. It produced some of the most memorable moments I’ve ever had watching anime, and I know that’s true for many others too. It’ll forever be iconic, regardless of how you view the ending. Thanks for sharing your AoT journey with us 😭

Jay rellim

loved this reaction!!! amazing end to a great story. ymir, reiner, and eren are all victims of being a very naive, very traumatized, and having way too much power lol ymir didnt know how to let go likely bc of her traumatic upbringing, and in the 2000+ years of her own suffering in paths, created suffering for entire nations bc she had too much power reiner didnt even deserve his titan, and bc of his trauma decided to push forward to rectify his own weakness/mistakes instead of own up to them, leading to the invasion eren himself admitted he was dumb and had too much power, his brain getting fried by seeing past, present and future. he wanted to protect his friends but he brushed aside all moderate attacks of enemy natinos in favor of the rumbling bc he also *wanted* to kill everyone and had the power to do so phewwwwww tldr treat kids right or else they'll get too powerful and create chaos for themselves, you, and others

Elijah K Javillonar

My interpretation of Mikasa ending is she did stay devoted to Eren. I also think that Jean ended up with Pieck, Jean had a thing for black haired girls, Pieck liked tall guys with beards, the interaction in the end when they were heading to Paradis could be seen as playful teasing in a relationship (who are you trying to look good for?). To top that point off, the Horse and the Cart

Frebbyweeb

First time watching aot and oh man this journey was something I lowkey feel empty after finishing the show now man man man I totally get armin at the end

hi steph! thank you so much for watching the best anime in the world and giving me an excuse to rewatch it for the 6th time😭❤️ i found your youtube account when i was watching reactions to the black clover opening, and i already loved your reaction to it. i clicked on your channel thinking i probably wouldn’t watch your anime reactions, but then i watched your reaction to reiner and bertholdt’s betrayal and immediately realized that i HAD to watch attack on titan with you. it was so much fun watching it with you. you’re genuinely the most sincere reactor i’ve ever watched, to the point that i even bought a patreon subscription MY FIRST ONE EVER😭 also, english isn’t my first language, so sometimes i didn’t even understand what was being said, but i still had such an amazing time watching your reactions. attack on titan is my favorite anime, and thank you so much for watching it. it was such an incredible experience to go through it with you🥹❤️

Jennywocky

Yeah i love that little realization that Founder Ymir purposefully let the pig escape as an act of defiance. She wasn't entirely spineless, nor just a scapegoat like s2 Ymir.

Jennywocky

I think this watch is the first time i noticed it too. Sneaky!

Jennywocky

Yeah in my comments I mentioned that Eren would always be like her first love/husband, even if she married someone else after Eren died. Totally would be in line for her to be with him in death, wearing that scarf...!

Jennywocky

I'm of similar mind. I get annoyed when people say it's "overrated." I would actually list it in my top 10 TV shows (not just anime), due to its scope, theme, character, world-building, revealed mysteries, and execution (VA'ing, animation, music, dialogue, directing, plotting), and pure epic story-telling. It might not be perfect, nothing is, but it's an amazing confluence of so many positive qualities. I get why Isayama is afraid he'll never create such a momentous narrative again.

Rumple

I'M SO GLAD WE MADE IT TO THE END!!! I started on YT and came over here before "Warriors" cause I NEEDED to hear the music with the reactions lol What a journey! I loved hearing all the analysis, and theories, and especially the tears haha. Glad you loved the story and characters so much.

krkcobain

im so late to the party cause i was on holidays but i can't believe we're already there. thank you for this incredible journey steph, been here ever since you started reacting to jojo part 6 and i've been loving every single one of your reactions, can't wait to see the next ones!!

Hannah

I think Eren's motivations are multi-layered. He wanted to make his friends heroes AND eradicate the titans AND pursue his dream of freedom by flattening the world. Human beings are complex. I think it makes Eren's character more interesting when he has all of these motivations competing with each other. I also think Eren is a teenage boy who got too much power and his brain isn't developed enough or has too much trauma to come up with another solution LOL.

That end credits stuff is really such a perfect ending to me. Even if you fight and win it all just becomes ashes in the end. You're just fighting to die another day.

Jennywocky

True dat -- but after the death, maybe you'll fight and win again. And then die. And then win. And then.. yeah.

FrankJaegar79

I never actually saw the whole movie theater scene until this, I’m glad I watched all the way through here

Ideos

Another change in the Armin-Eren dialogue was also the ordering of the exchange. In the manga Armin learns about 80% of humanity dying then asks Eren about his relationship with Mikasa (so it sounds like he doesn't care about humanity at all), whereas in the anime he asks about Mikasa first, before he learns about the impact of the Rumbling.

Ideos

Well, if Armin was a girl, Eren for sure would have had two waifus.

Ideos

Good point! I did think that Jean and Pieck would end up together based on their general interaction, but I never connected those details. That would not rule out that Mikasa may have married a rando and had children with him. Just like Historia did. You don't need romantic love to make babies after all.

stimpaxx

Rewatching with your reactions has been way better than just rewatching it myself because the way you react reminds me of how I felt during my first time watching it. Thank you, Steph! I think Isayama's a bit of a nihilist. Everything is cyclical, and the only meaning of AoT is the meaning that you assign to it yourself. Throughout the show, we are shown so many complex characters, and for me it was hard to judge their decisions, even when they were particularly destructive or gruesome. I think the same holds true for the entire show. Easter egg that I haven't seen anybody mention before: Is the epilogue with the three watching AoT in the theater real? I think there's a bit of a multiverse thing going on. Of course, anybody can kind of decide whether it's "real" or whatever just based on how you feel, but the Mikasa from the epilogue is actually in one of the episodes in season 4. When Gabi blasts Eren and Zeke catches his head to activate the Rumbling, Eren kind of has a psychedelic montage of images with people connected to the Paths, and you get a very quick glimpse of goth Mikasa. I only noticed it this last time I watched the show. Pretty neat.

I originally wrote out a super long comment on everything I thought of while watching this. It was so long that I kept having to leave the app and come bac to continue writing it. And then the app crashed and deleted my comment LOL. I was so "upset" that I just gave up and left it alone. To summarize a lot of what I said: what a beautiful series with so much to say. Hange's death makes me cry every time, and i cried a couple times during this rematch just knowing what was coming for her and for just who she is. I hate floch and I hate the way the writer sometimes portrays fascism as necessary, cool, or otherwise worthy of respect in the series. I am very politically aware, and a lot of what I do/think about is politics-related. And this conversation goes very very deep with attack on titan. This isnt the place for that, but I did/do have so many thoughts about it. Armin and annie are very cute together and I hope they got to live long lives with each other. Its kind of freaky to me that some of his feelings for her may be bertholt's. I think thats a whole other conversation about what makes a person themselves. Armin and eren should have kissed, that would have been so fucking funny and the best twist in the whole series. Jean and Connie holding each other during their final moments make me want to throw up its so sad and heart wrenching. I think the line that speaks to me the most from eren was the "im just a stupid kid who got too much power" or whatever. I think thats what this all is. In season 1, eren is on the evacuation boat and he declares with shining protagonist eyes that he will destroy every single titan outside the walls. That anger in him cascades backwards through time and causes a feedback loop, trapping him in this timeline where he cant do anything to save his friends but to kill 80% of humanity. On the flipside of this coin, the founder Ymir's hatred cascades FORWARDS through time and slams into eren like an eldritch being nobody can understand. I sometimes think ymir created this time loop for herself, so that she could get revenge on 80% of Marleyeans for what they did to her children after she died, AND to relive her love through mikasa. She can never get revenge on the person she loved, king fritz. So instead she creates a time loop that forces mikasa to do the thing she could never do, which was kill the person she loved and protect her family. And then ymir looks through mikasa's eyes to feel those feelings she had thousands of years ago one last time (or forever? Since its a time loop until eren dies?). When I watch shows I generally dont engage with online discourse. So I never had any of the problems it seems like many people did? I thought the ending was incredibly satisfying, albeit a bit harrowing. Eldia rose to heights they never thought possible and then the (presumably) whole island was destroyed in a fiery apocalypse. BUT, then an unknown number of years later, life is still around. Its different, set back possibly hundreds or thousands of years technologically, but humans are still there, exploring the unknown. I think thats beautiful in its own way. The scout regiment can never truly be destroyed, as long as people want to know what they dont know :) The world of attack on titan is full of hatred and i think is truly a world in which you kill or be killed. It is so important to remember that OUR WORLD IS NOT LIKE THAT. Our world is run by rapist pedophiles who change the laws to help themselves, and WE can do something about the current system to help people who aren't being trampled on.

Kay

I know im late to the party but faze gabi made me laugh so fucking hard holy shit that is genius

Anna Kyruin

I haven't actually looked at what the reddits etc are saying, but I personally think that Mikasa got together with Jean after Eren's death, and that's who we see returning to the grave with her. At least that's a satisfying thought. Some people find this idea distasteful because they can't comprehend someone loving more than one person in a work of fiction. I don't think Mikasa would ever stop loving Eren, but I also don't think she would have to in order to build a relationship with Jean.

Karan Abhi

Why did you have mixed feelings, though? Like what would you change?

Karan Abhi

Yeah but why he said that he also wanted to flatten the earth and that was his motivation ? that confuses me

Barry

I feel like that person. My response would be that I was really into the theme of freedom lovers falling into absolute evil due to their obsession. The ending we got felt like a poor copy of code geass. None of that makes the show anything less than spectacular though, journey before destination.

Jamie Lord

Can we just take a moment to appreciate that there probably isn't another single person to cause more titan carnage in one session than Hange? She was pulling shit that makes the Ackerman's look like children. Woman slayed like 20 COLOSSALS. MAYBE MORE. I'm not sure there's even another titan that's wreaked that much havoc at once. HANGE IS GOATED.

Mathieu Aubre

The cinema airing a movie called ''Shark vs Hiker'' at the end killed me
