So the whole scene of Light stalking, enticing, and ultimately trapping/sentencing Naomi is one of the worst emotional experiences I’ve had watching anime in general (and I have seen some really crazy things!) It was such a gut punch when he finally tricked her into providing him with the information he needed to arrange her suicide, and we all know she (along with L) were the most formidable adversaries that Light has faced so far. I literally felt sick to my stomach for a few hours after watching this episode, I had such a visceral reaction to that betrayal – and then the callousness of rubbing her face in it (“I am Kira”), just so he could watch the light fade from her eyes... I mean, Light murdered her fiancé (so she’s still grieving and feeling lost), and she’s been so open and honest with him, while also being fastidiously careful about who she trusts – she’s such a professional and mentally sharp and thus a threat to him. He claims to want to make a new world by destroying evil, but this was the most blatant blasphemy of that mission, where he takes a genuinely wounded but intrinsically good person like Naomi and then ruins and destroys her, all because it makes him feel powerful and protects his interests. (You can’t even say it was just pragmatic, because he WANTS to see her reaction to him being Kira and knowing she just got herself killed, then asks her little teasing questions as she walks off, knowing she is on track to end her life!) He pretended to be an angel of Light, and picked, and pried, and nagged, and followed her around, pretended to be an ally, and finally considers it a victory when she does something good – TRUSTING someone, to help stop a string of murders – and thus exposes herself to the Death Note and Light's cruelest cut. I feel like this is the moment that really damns Light to whatever freaking eternal punishment he richly deserves. So I read that the author was going to have Naomi actually be a foil to Light but realized quickly that she was just too formidable and the story would end too quickly if he didn’t remove her from the investigation. She was just THAT smart. But I think there is a prequel story written, about the investigations she did prior in LA, so she actually gets to be used as a character elsewhere. She was just literally one of the coolest characters in this story. (... OTOH, Ryuk still deserves all the apples.)

And this is where I find Light to be irredeemable. The way he revealed his identity to Naomi 5 seconds before she became mindless just so he could see the look on her face. Killing her is one thing. It's an immoral act, but it's done out of self-preservation. Definitely a top tier moment in this show. There's only a couple other moments that live up to that scene.

Naomi's death is so brutal. I think this is the first time it shows Light's true evil. He doesnt care about a new world, he doesnt really care about solving crime. He wants to feel powerful, smart, and in control. WE NEED L TO GET HIS ASS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! Light is so horrible to basically every single woman in the entire anime, and only marginally less so to his sister and mother. It would've been so awesome for him to be caught by a woman he underestimated, especially if it were naomi! I think that would've been a great thematic ending.

THE POTATO CHIP SCENE YEAHHHHHHH LOLLL

I'm not sure he was teasing her while she was leaving. I always interpretted it as him testing the death note. Making sure that she would follow through with the commands with no interruptions.

Jennywocky

Yeah, if she loses conscious control right at the timer, then he would have been testing as you note...

Beefz

Could be both, because he is definitely enjoying it and gloating about it

the "I take a chip and eat it" line is so funny in the english dub lmao such a meme.

"Why did I think she was going to be a cool character?" Because she was going to be! And then a combination of her being too smart and thus redundant with L in the story, and the author admitting he wasn't confident he could properly write a strong female character long term, meant that she just gets one very cool character arc episode. Gotta say, an author deciding they're bad at writing competent women, so they just won't try is at least a very honest r/MenWritingWomen case lol.

O 100% I can see as to why Naomi was removed - her a L would have caught Light too damn quickly, considering how intelligent they are. Thanks for always sharing your incredibly insightful thoughts, Jenny they’re always so fun to read!

Otaku Steph

Yessss an actual horrifying psychopath. HE MUST BE STOPPED.

Otaku Steph

LIGHT IS AN INCEL CONFIRMEDDD. He’s drunk on power and it shows

Otaku Steph

It seems I need to rewatch it dubbed once I’ve finished!

Otaku Steph

THATS SO SAAADD 😭😭😭 yes the honesty is definitely appreciated but quite disheartening at the same time HAHA

This is a fairly decent dub, and the Light VA is excellent, including just conveying that sense of being the "perfect young man" that no one can accept might be Kira. He's the kind of young man parents would want their daughters to marry, lol.

Shin

I disagree, I don't think he was testing the note. We know light, if there was any possibility where she wouldn't have followed through, then his secret would be out and he would have just told somebody that he was Kira. He's way too smart to risk something like that. He 100% already knew what would happen and was glazing himself on his victory
