What does 1000-7 mean? A friend asked me that question a lot, but she never explained it to me xd

It's from a scene in the anime Tokyo Ghoul where the main character Kaneki (a half-ghoul) is being tortured by another ghoul. To keep him from passing out so the torture can continue, the torturer forces him to repeatedly answer the math question: ''What's 1000 minus 7?''. Then 993-7, and etc. until the torture ends. And yeah, this quote became a meme :)
