Yesterday Peter and Lloyd held a hour long chat in our Discord server and I just want to recap what was discussed for those that missed it. (But if you wish to read back through the entire discussion the start of the chat is pinned in the #concepts-and-spoilers channel)

[Please note: for those of you who don't want to read spoiler type information, then maybe don't read any further of this post] :o)

Ok, let's get on with the recap shall we.

The first match-up idea that was discussed in depth yesterday was Jeff Bezos vs Lex Luthor. Two bald powerful rich men, which could be a good idea for a future Pete vs Lloyd battle. Lloyd as Luthor and Peter as Bezos seemed to be the preferred casting. Some patrons felt Mansa Musa or John D. Rockefeller or Willy Wonka could be alternatives to Luthor.

A second match-up discussed was Ulysses S. Grant vs Robert E. Lee which would clearly be a US Civil War centred battle. Pete has been reading (and enjoying) a biography called "Grant" by Ron Chernow and feels he could be a juicy character for a future ERB. Patrons weren't too keen on Robert E. Lee being Grant's opponent and an alternative idea - Ulysses S. Grant vs George S. Patton - was brought up which Pete also liked the sound of. One concern some patrons had was the fact it was 'too American'. Pancho Villa, Toussaint L'Oveurture, Ho Chi Minh were other options brought up.

A third match-up spoke about was Godzilla vs King Kong (which if you are unaware is one which patrons have been submitting lyric ideas for on the discord server). News broke this week that the upcoming film has been brought forward to a March 2020 release. Pete is still unsure about the match-up but he admits it could be a lot of fun. Lloyd is very keen on it and it's one we are gonna consider for a battle this year. We may wait until we watch the film to make a final decision.

We also briefly discussed the other current writing rooms on Discord (Mussolini vs Nero and Sub-Zero vs Elsa). Pete is still not sure about Nero. Lloyd has doubts about how we could pull off the violence and bloodshed that Sub Zero / Mortal Kombat is known for especially against a Disney / child friendly character like Elsa. But they are still two strong ideas that are floating around.

If you have any thoughts about these specific five match-up ideas feel free to post them in the comments or email us at: erbpatreon@gmail.com  There is a strong possibility that we will open up a new channel on discord for lyric submissions for either Grant vs Patton or Bezos vs Luthor - but no decision has been made yet. Your opinions might just change our mind. :o)

That concludes the recap. We might do more recaps like this if you find them beneficial. One quick reminder - on Sunday (Jan 24th) at 2.30pm PT Pete and Lloyd will be hosting a video live stream here on Patreon, so we hopefully will see you there! (You can watch a replay later if you can't tune in live)

Talk soon!

PS: if you are interested in submitting lyrics for the three current writing rooms, please be aware that the deadline for submissions are as follows: Mussolini vs Nero - Jan 20th, Sub-Zero vs Elsa - Jan 20th, Godzilla vs King Kong - Jan 31st. You can locate the three writing channels on the Discord - they are named 'antichrist', 'burnout' and 'toxicity'.

in regards to Bezos v Luthor, I do think during these times it's an amazing Lloyd v Peter battle and that despite the dislike from some is something the crew will change our minds on. I think characters like Mansa Musa, Willy Wonka and John D. Rockefeller are characters that are strong enough to have face off against each other or against others in different matchups. I would not hate Bezos v Luthor if that was the path chosen. Grant is an awesome President to use in ERB (he is complicated and interesting) and while facing Patton is American heavy, it's a strong clash of personalities. but Toussaint L'Oveurture is also a strong figure from a region in the world not yet explored and that could be fun. but the crew know what's best.

I'm sure a lot of people who were in the Discord have heard my thoughts on this but I'd like to just state my final case for why Ulysses S. Grant should go against someone other than George S. Patton. I'm not against American vs. American battles as a rule, but when the connection of a battle is "generals", doing an American vs. an American less than a century apart in distance is, to quote Lance Armstrong, "like having a pasta contest without Italy". There are so many fascinating generals throughout world history who could serve as an excellent foil to Ulysses S. Grant (or George S. Patton for that matter). My favorite idea is Ulysses S. Grant vs Toussaint L'Ouverture, based on the fact that using Ulysses S. Grant in a battle and having him represent the "guy who fought to free the slaves" is a little short-sighted given his own racial blindspots, so putting him against a lesser known former slave who actually fought for his own people's freedom feels like a slam dunk to me. But even if you want to do something that can work as a Peter vs. Lloyd, there are plenty of international generals that either Peter or Lloyd can play great and could work perfectly as opponents for Grant OR Patton (Charlemagne, Hannibal Barca, Oliver Cromwell, Hernan Cortes, Erwin Rommel, etc). Ultimately, Grant vs Patton is a match-up that would needlessly rob the series of an opportunity to explore fascinating figures from countries that don't get a fifth of the representation that the series already provides. I hope my point is well taken, and I'll respect and support any decision you all come to! Also, for the record, I'm ambivalent on Bezos vs. Luthor :)

I could see Lloyd as Luthor. Good casting idea. Grant vs Patton! That's a good one. Whoever came up with that one -- good job. I still think that Daenerys vs Elsa would be better. Ice vs fire. Both are queens with similar hair color.

While my mouth waters at the prospect of the iconic Patton against the American Flag backdrop for ERB, and I respect the matchup idea of Grant vs Patton... I feel like anything regarding the American Civil War would be a golden opportunity to bring in Captain America and Ironman from Marvel Civil War. My favorite ERB formats are the ones that put historical figures against modern icons to give context to history. (Like Thanos v Oppenheimer was a perfect gateway to introduce people who have never heard of the guy who made the atomic freakin bomb. ) Grant and Lee, being the historical figures, could face off against Cap and Tony. And while they can go hard for a while, the joke would be that by the end, both teams turn against eachother. (A la Philosophers battle) Or maybe Grant can pair with Cap, and Lee can join Tony, to make it the winning vs losing sides of their respective Civil Wars? While I’m hard pressed to commit to a specific matchup here, I just think sidestepping “Civil War” is a poor decision. It’s a HUGE part of our history, still relevant even today. And Marvel Civil War is a HUGE pop culture phenomenon. Anyway you slice it, it’s a solid through-line for ERB and will be a massive missed opportunity.

I strongly dislike Lex Luthor vs Bezos. I'm already iffy on Bezos (although u cant argue the material isnt there) but after we got Wolverine, The Joker AND Thanos in season six alone (not 2 mention the big DC three and Deadpool used earlier) I think we need 2 take a break from Superheros. While fine in moderation (for example I'm a big proponent of Spidey happening eventually) it can get very tiring and in some respects remind me more of Infinite Source rather than erb, which is unfortunate. Not to mention, there is a wealth, pun intended, of interesting rich people from history at your disposal. This recap has listed several of them. Hell I feel even Jay Gatsby would at the very least bring a classical literature angle, plus he enters the public domain this year. I feel I am in the minority here, but I can't lie that if this does make it to fruition, I will feel kinda disappointed and anti hype. I just hope erb continues to take history (and diversity as well ie sam's post) in mind.
