In the last ERB quiz one bonus prize was for one patron to pick ANY match-up of their own choosing to receive feedback from Peter, Lloyd and HeadMonk. That lucky patron was called Lemon and they chose...Adam Sandler vs Charlie Chaplin

So, let's see what the guys thought of the idea! (I also thought it'd be nice to see what all patrons thought about the match-up idea too. Please vote in the poll)

Lloyd: "I love Sandler. He's a powerhouse and all in all underrated actor. I think he'd be funny in a battle. I can picture it being a lot like that SNL sketch where everyone does their own little impression of Sandler and his characters. Not sure how it would go in a match up against the silent movie king. I always figured Charlie Chaplin vs Mr. Bean would be the play if we went that route somehow. All in all two great characters. But, I'm just not sure if they would be the right choice to match against one another."

Peter: "At first glance, this matchup did not appeal to me. I think I have some bias against Adam Sandler. Once I let that go, and looked at it a little more objectively, I think this is actually a pretty solid idea. Adam Sandler is obviously a huge name, he has tons of material and references to pull from, and big punch line quotes from every generation of movies. He also has a lot of things you can make fun of. Charlie Chaplin - equally big name, perhaps less known about him by most people, but that only creates more opportunities to illuminate some history. The more I write about this matchup, the more I like it. Well done. It's a new one on my radar."

HeadMonk: "For some reason I used to hate Sandler. I dunno if I just saw all the wrong movies or what. I just found him super annoying more than anything. Over time I've seen more of his films and my dislike for him has calmed down. He will never be someone I love as he'll always be a poor mans Jim Carrey imho. But either Sandler or Carrey could be an interesting challenge for us to portray in an ERB. I think Chaplin should have been in an ERB by now. It's kind of ridiculous he hasn't. I think the talk of a potential Mr Bean match-up has kinda weighed Chaplin down for years. Mr Bean isn't even someone I want to see in an ERB. But, Chaplin is certainly a big, big yes from me."

Now, let us know what you think by voting! :)

Think I would rather see Chaplin vs Burt Reynolds in a famous mustache war.

Braden697

I think I prefer to see Charlie Chaplin vs Charlie Bucket (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

LionManatic

I was kinda thinking more of Chaplin vs Gene Wilder? Two wholesome comedic actors, that everyone knows and respects.

Nick Z.

prefer JIm Carrey vs Chaplin but Adam ain't bad either

The Stupendium

I love Chaplin. But I feel there are better opponents out there for him. That being said I can also see Sandler working well in a battle, this just isn't a matchup that excites me so much! Chaplin vs Bean sounds amazing, especially curious to hear the kind of flows you'd give them considering both of their works are best known as mostly silent. Or you could widen it and have Chaplin vs Atkinson, that way you can work in more of Atkinson's characters like Blackadder and cover different points in Chaplin's career too, from the tramp up to his later talkies. That may contrast better and be less limiting? You could go from the Tramp vs Bean in one verse to The Great Dictator vs Blackadder in the next, etc.

Philly Redsox

The Dukes of Hazzard vs. The Olsen Twins.

Shawn Ravenfire

Chaplin vs Bean is definitely the better choice. The rap might be difficult, because they're both known more for non-verbal comedy, but you guys can make it work.

Foxdoc

I think it’s time that people let go of Chaplin vs. Mr. Bean. All it does is weigh Chaplin down in my opinion.

Ilan Woll

Despise Adam Sandler, and how do you have a silent movie star rap (if they did it with signs only, perhaps).

Jason Ulloa

The silent films often cut to a black screen with the dialogue written on it. However, since ERB puts the lyrics on the bottom of the screen, they could put a lo-fi filter on the rapper's bars and make it sound like an old-timey recording.

Jason Ulloa

This. Remember, Chaplin is often credited for giving the greatest speech ever made in his movie The Great Dictator.

The Stupendium

Both Chaplin and Atkinson are famed both for their silent (or near silent) work AND their brilliant oratory. Chaplin's brilliant speeches and Atkinson's knife sharp wit. I'd love to see a battle that explores both sides of them and I think moving through their careers over the course of the battle would be brilliant.

The Stupendium

Also important to remember that Chaplin's career extended well beyond the silent era, he has many iconic 'talkies'! :)

John Crovis

Gene Wilder, Jim Carry, Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr. Bean) are all better choices than Sandler.

Captain Rudy 4021

I'd rather see Adam Sandler vs Jim Carrey. They're both the biggest comedy stars of the 90s

Thomas Peluso

I was going to say something similar - I like the matchup, but it wouldn't feel right to me to have Chaplin audibly rap.

Alvin Franco

Just imagining how obnoxious both of those guys would be puts a cringey smile on my face 🤣

Alvin Franco

I’m in the Chaplin vs Jim Carrey camp. Both are long overdue for an appearance. I know you’ve considered Carrey before, for the Stand-Up Comedians lineup, but his whole thing was revolutionizing PHYSICAL comedy in the modern era. And of course, he has his own streak of serious dramatic acting as well. (Truman Show, Spotless Mind.) It’s absolutely a perfect 1-to-1, Historical vs Modern matchup. (Plus, lots more to make fun of about Carrey, with his antiquated homophobic humor and modern pseudo-spiritual endeavors, etc.) Like everyone else, I’m surprised that I’ve warmed up to the idea of Adam Sandler. But while he’s a hilarious candidate, he does not occupy nearly the same space that Carrey does historically. What else can you say about the guy that hasn’t already been said a million times? He’s had stupid bad movies later in life. But whatever, they’re still making millions, and everyone who knows him seems to love him. He’s had no scandals or drama around his real life, I’m not sure what kind of meat there will be there 🤷🏻‍♂️ And Mr. Bean is more of a loving “tribute” to silent film era comedy, in that his silence was not a necessity.

Cooper C. Wilms

Chaplin vs Pee Wee Herman is still my vote. Sandler and Carrey do nothing for me; Bean just does what Chaplin did, but worse. Pee Wee is the happy middle between the verbose Jim and Adam and the slapstick Bean. Pee Wee Herman-- let that simmer.

I agree with this but also Ratio

Foxdoc

No no sir, after you

Shawn Ravenfire

He could do silent movie title cards for the first round, and then switch to talkie for the second round, because he "has something important to say," which would be a good nod to when he broke the silent film tradition for the Great Dictator.

Shawn Ravenfire

Another good matchup would be Pee Wee Herman vs Elvira, due to their common history.

Bubonic

How about Charlie Chaplin vs Betty White?

Alice C.

I think Jim Carrey would work better. Sandler's films are often critically panned so I'm afraid this would seem too one-sided.

Shawn Ravenfire

Or all four Golden Girls vs another four-person team.

Mike Noe

Sweet butter Jesus. I can only imagine how you would rap battle a silent film character... But I know it'll be awesome!

Brennan

Spiderman vs. Danny phantom

Samuel Miller

I don’t feel it would be a fair match for Adam Sandler. But I wouldn’t mind seeing either of them in the rap battles soon to come.

Leo M. R.

Golden Girls vs. The Beatles?
