The movie Godzilla fans used to refer to as: G.I.N.O. (Godzilla In Name Only). It's like a floppy fishy smelling roller coaster ride that doesn't seem to know when to end. God the characters are just awful. Iguana Godzilla out here pushin Taco Bell y'all, watch out! Enjoy Patrons!

ATOMIC CHORIZO

This is the movie that introduced me to the godzilla franchise.

Godzilla vs Kong 2 is coming out next year and so is a Japanese Godzilla movie called Godzilla: zero

llama

You did it! I thought you weren't going to! Man I'm going through some shit right now and seeing this made my day.

kaijukyle

Broderick's acting reminded me of Neil Breen Now time for Peter Jackson's King Kong

ATOMIC CHORIZO

To answer some people's questions godzilla is male, 98 godzilla is male but reproduces asexualy like some reptiles.

SkrogNoSkrog

Oh hell yeah I’ve been waiting for this gem. If you want an underrated, kick ass movie you should check out Dredd if you haven’t seen it already. One of my faves.

Brent Turner

Excellent commentary, as always! I forgot about the Gene Siskel/Roger Ebert parody 🤣 good choice boyos.

David Ortiz

lol so i remember loving this movie when i saw it as a kid....it did not age well at all lol. Fujn lil tid bit while there wasnt a sequel film there was a sequel saturday morning cartoon. where Brodricks charecter gets imprinted on by that baby Godzilla and they fight other monsters lol

Will See

The mom&pop VHS store I grew up near had a great "Foreign" section which included all the OG Godzillas. So I was a Godzilla head and I was so fucking pumped for the American Godzilla to come out with Ferris bueller. I was 14 and I think it was the first time I was really disappointed by a movie in the theaters...

Sydney Cruz

This American Godzilla (nicknamed: Zilla) is so hated (for good reason) that it gets destroyed by OG Godzilla in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) 🥹

llama

A good Godzilla film for commentary would be Godzilla 2000. It has Godzilla, Aliens, Tokyo, etc. Its the Godzilla film TOHO made a year later after this disaster. Its in the collection I sent you.

Matthew Broadrick: That’s a lot of fish

Ninjaturtles20

Hank azaria is in a few live action roles like in the heat, pretty woman,Mystery Men,Dodgeball,Night at the museum 2,Year One,Hop and two Smurfs movies as Gargamel

Ninjaturtles20

the end of the movie is a rip-off Jurassic Park but with no charm, man this movie was and worse than I remembered, tha french Leon guy is badass and tha siskel/ebert parody characters was funny and done on purpose that even those critics hated the movie and gave thumbs down lol

oh wow here’s a crazy fun fact: Mayor Ebert and his assistant Gene are a parody of the TV film critic duo Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. This was in response to their negative reviews of Emmerich and Devlin's earlier films Stargate (1994) and Independence Day (1996). The film also co-opted their trademark Thumbs up/Thumbs down method of rating films by depicting Mayor Ebert's campaign as "Thumbs Up for New York!" and Gene giving Ebert a thumbs down at the end of the film when he finally decides he has had enough of his abuse and quits. When the real Siskel and Ebert reviewed the film on their show, they gave it two thumbs down and Siskel said the filmmakers spoofing them was "petty" and said "If you're going to go through the trouble of putting us in a monster movie, why don't you at least take advantage of having the monster either eat or squash us". The duo would later name the film as one of their worst films of 1998. And in Ebert's print review in The Chicago Sun Times, he wrote "They let us off lightly; I fully expected to be squished like a bug by Godzilla." Although he called Michael Lerner's performance as Mayor Ebert "gamely played".

fun fact: Certain stars like Hank Azaria and Jean Reno are said to have disliked the film. However, despite some unfounded rumors claiming otherwise, Matthew Broderick was actually fond of the movie and continued to defend it decades later, admitting he never understood its negative reputation because of the high box office returns.

Ninjaturtles20

Running gag: everyone mispronouncing Nick's last name Tatopoulos.

Ninjaturtles20

fun fact: In a 2014 interview for the British film magazine Empire, Roland Emmerich admitted that he wanted to make a disaster movie about meteors rather than a Godzilla flick. However, Armageddon (1998) and Deep Impact (1998) had already been made by the time he was done directing this movie, which frustrated him as he wanted to make one first.

Ninjaturtles20

fun fact: Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin originally turned down the offer to make the movie. It was only after a drastically different version of the film (which would have been directed by Jan de Bont) and later by David Fincher had been scrapped that the studio approached them again, partly because they felt that their reluctance to create a Godzilla movie would make them ideal candidates for reimagining the property with a new approach. This time, they accepted the job.

Ninjaturtles20

fun fact: In a January 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Roland Emmerich admitted he deliberately gave Godzilla an usual design because he wanted to be removed from the film and direct a movie about a meteor disaster instead. However, Toho Studios unexpectedly approved his Godzilla redesign, much to his dismay. In the interview, Emmerich said the following: I didn't want to do Godzilla. But they made me a deal, which was unheard of. I said, "OK, let's go about this really radically. I'm not doing big-belly Godzilla. I'm doing him as a lizard." That was supposed to tell everybody I can't do this movie. [Godzilla owner Toho] said, "Oh, we'll call this the new Godzilla, the Hollywood Godzilla. Then, we can still do our fat Godzilla." I said, "Shit!"

Ninjaturtles20

Fun Fact:Although the budget is estimated to have been $130 million, if we include the famously expansive US marketing, some speculate that the final number might reach up to $170 million. Merchandising released by the 250 business partners added approximately $150 million to the movie's overall cost. Although the picture was a mild success, raking in close to $380 million worldwide, this was much less than what the studio anticipated, and the tie-in merchandising produced disastrous sales, with one exception being the movie's highly successful soundtrack. I agree the soundtrack is the best part and the explosion set piece of square garden too

AvtheLost

Yall should add Pacific Rim (First movie) to the dub pool. It's awesome

Been waiting a long time for this one, laughed my ass off. I was obsessed with this movie as a 6/7 year old, the godzilla parts at least. I had a couple of these "high-tech" toy hand puppets of this godzilla and I think I used the roar button on it so much that it broke. I also have a distinct memory of eating candy from a bag with this godzilla on it back in '98 (marketing went hard). Anyway they got Godzilla completely wrong in this movie. Godzilla's supposed to be a force of nature, a reflection of our hubris and lust for destruction, the arrogance to think we should or could control nuclear weapons and the vanity that we'd use those weapons without being ready for the fallout. And that to defeat Godzilla we would need to create even worse weapons (essentially being that nuclear weapons might not be the worst we can do). I might be slightly off in that assessment, but the point is Godzilla should not be a giant iguana who just wants to eat fish and lay eggs. And it's probably a good thing that none of the Toho godzilla music was used, would be wasted on this trash. I'm going to watch Shin Godzilla again, a good godzilla movie.

Moviejunkie

Right off the bat you can tell that this was gonna be a mess when they can’t even get his origin right. He coup have been born in Japan but the made him French. 🤦‍♂️

The4thkind

American psycho. Next dub?

Samuel Ellis

I gotta nominate "Hell Comes to Frogtown" for a dub. Rowdy Roddy Piper's penis becomes Government property, in a scuff Mad Max/Fallout world.

Hank Greenburg

I had fond memories of this from when I watched it as a kid but only really remembered the gumball scene lol. This movie is so goofy though and so much of the cgi does not hold up. Also has the WORST romance and the WORST military of like any movie hahaha

jaboodydubs

Those army boys just couldn't land a hit man lmao

Moviejunkie

I’m just curious, if you guys do watch more Godzilla which ones would you see. The original 1950’s - 70’s? The series running through 80’s-2000’s or the most modern ones from 2014 to now. In my mind they all have dub potential.

Will See

this movie is so nuts

Clifford Romoser

This movie was immediately followed up with an animated series that only lasted 1 season.

Mongo Thinks

You had me dying with the iguana sounds!

Ghostbleach

Love the commentary for this dumb movie

Ghostbleach

Tim Burton was considered to direct but was overlooked cause he would’ve had a guy in a suit
