HRNNNGG WILLY I LOVE U SO MUCH HES SUCH A BIG DUDE IN HEART

FluffleCraft

Willy, while dramatic, is for sure in his right to defend his stance and his newfound love. He is in the face of a man who not only is a hypocrite but also willing to expel him just for simply interacting with his son. It doesn't help that Willy also didn't wish to instigate an argument until Mr.Green made it about himself and Will. He's using cards against Willy that he knows will get him in trouble so Willy isn't holding back any punches. He hates that the world is allowed to punish him, and he's not gonna let the world fall on him again without a fight. That fight in him is that he now has Cody and isn't gonna let anyone take this one good thing away from him.

Oh man, these next few pages are gonna hurt arn't they? Tw T

Damn. Willy pulled an Uno Reverse Card before Uno even existed.

Fucking called it! Willy is the Walter White of this story. He will fuck things up for people for his own ego. Honestly, I really feel for Cody. This going to scar the boy for life. I appreciate how Birdman turned Willy from a sympathetic character into a complete villain by the end of the story. Its ballsy to write a novel with a moral that 'Broken people are broken no matter what they do'

Javi Lu

You would vilify Willy first, a product of abuse, over the man in power threatening expulsion over a personal matter?

catboywife

concerning to see people so eager to vilify Willy throughout this comic lol

I apologize if I caused offence but it certainly reads that way. Earlier in the story Willy was quite obviously broken. He had dwarfism, popping undisclosed medication while still in his early 20s. He is painfully aware of this and is the source of a lot of his misery. Which certainly makes the character very sympahetic. He has been dealt a shitty deck. The he isnt exactly enamored with being gay either but for someone living in the 60 US ( at least thats what I assume the time is) he is too blasé about the consequences of being in that time. He doesnt have the most supportive home and overall he doesnt live up to the standarts the soceity expects of him. His miserable, catty demeanor is easily explained, but its hard to excuse him as he treats everyone like shit. Literally everyone even people who are nice to him. Cody, waiters, clerks at the watch shop, fellow students (who are not bullies). The reader keeps rooting for him in hopes that Cody will fix him. That eventually his bratty behavior will subside. Instead he becomes more lecherous, more catty and manipulative. The power dynamic in the relationship is obviously slanted towards Willy. So Cody, bless his heart wanted to introduce him to the family. His had being born in the at the turn on the century is expected to be a very conservative man. Being gay wasnt exactly 'in' so judging people in those times my contemporary standarts is dishonest imho. As a person who is from a not gay friendly country I can say that his father (a person who was born by my guess between 1890s and 1920 his dad was very well reserved) is plenty tolerant for his time. Willy instead of acting cool and starts needling the father knowing full well that this will cause strife down the line. Willy is smart he knows exactly what he is doing. He admits that 'he knows whats best for Cody'. So he tries to estrage Cody from his family and make him dependent on Willy. Which is what I expected from previous issues. I know its may not be a popular assessment but I think Willy is the villian of this story. A villian of his own making. He is born broken and not even infinite love and affection of Cody can fix him.

I believe Anti-hero would be a better term than villain @wistfane if that is the term you are looking for

Except Willy wasn’t “born broken”, no one is. He was “broken” by his shitty parents and the shitty world he was brought up in that sought every opportunity to make him feel rejected and worthless, both for being small and especially for being gay. Willy’s unpleasant behaviour is a symptom of this, not its own disease. Cody’s dad, along with society in general during this time period, is the problem here, not Willy.

I dunno how people are getting villian. Thats a fairly ignorant take. The reason Willy acts this way towards most people is because of what were seeing right here. Willy has pointed out that because he small he's been bullied, and then since hes more openly gay that added to the harassment. We see right during the first chapter he was minding his own business before a student went over and started bothering him cause of what he was drawing. Student could of just left it alone but he deserved getting his head smacked in if he was gonna press the issue and be a jackass. Willy is 'broken' but he also is fairly kind in his own way, he just has a hard time expressing it. Willy lacks tact, because his entire live is filled with people who will not express the same softness towards him. Willy doesn't have the luxury of giving people benefit of the doubt when he is the most vulnerable. Willy is constantly attempting to protect himself before he is hurt, its why he is so volatile because the logic his brain is doing "Attack first before they get you." Cody is one the first people to express that patience and kindness that is needed. Do not excuse a homophobic twat via 'time period'. For a species that before we even had proper language has shown compassion, you being an ass over someone liking the same sex is inexcusable. Willy has every right to be callous towards this hypocritical priest. Christians very much like to pick and choose what sections of the bible they will willingly follow and so many love to choose and miscontrue what it said. For people translating the original hebrew its likely that it was not talking about being against homosexuality and the verse people referencing more about adultery and cheating. Also do not understand why christians pay attention to anything old testament, cause they are new testament. Which is heavily more so about compassion and being understanding. The damn bit of scripture thats often pulled showing 'God disapproves of gays' is fucking old testament. LOL Willy is no villian, he ain't no hero either. Willy is a protagonist going through stages of growth, he is a mortal just trying to live in a society that judges him for every aspect of who he is. Since he is never willing to roll over or apologize for who he is, that is what is inspiring and charming about this little jerk. He took being smacked by Cody pretty well, he knows when he pushes too much. But it takes time to get better about that when you have decades of pain to go through and noone to trust. Willy has been going to 'mental health' professionals that just try to make him not an issue while not actually being helpful in any way. There is not empathy or compassion from them, just judgement. What purplebirdman has done here has not shown that broken people will remain broken. But its that healing from this takes time, that people who preach about sin and understanding can be hypocritical. That relationships are complicated and filled with bumps and cracks but you must communicate in order to make things better. I believe overall this comic is about communication and connection and how people improve in those areas.
