On May 14th, Amazon quietly changed the Kindle Unlimited algorithm. Overnight, less than half of 'page reads' were being registered.

The blue line in this graph is Kindle Unlimited page reads, and it was previously the majority of my income (and the income of every other KU author). This effectively slashed my income by 35%, which is a pretty sizeable demotion. I'm not thrilled about it, and it doesn't look like something that's going to be 'fixed'.

Over the past two weeks, the other authors who make this their living have been in a full panic. Today, two different authors announced that they will no longer commit to writing full-time, and have begun the process of finding some other way to pay the bills. What that means for you: less content.

I won't say who the authors are; they will make their own announcements shortly. Sadly, they are big names if you read trans and feminization romance.

I, personally, am very lucky, because I have YOU. Years ago, I started this Patreon and have grown it sloowwwwlly to what it is now. It's not massive, but it's currently what's stopping me from retiring the pen to seek out something that can better pay the bills.

Amazon has done this many times over the past decade. I was around in 2015 during the 'smutpocalypse', which ruined the livelihoods of many authors I knew well at the time. Then I was there for the second big hit to authors, when they dropped the value of a page read from $0.01 per page to $0.001. Somehow, I've always managed to slip through the cracks. I even survived in 2022 when Amazon unrolled their bot moderation, which banned thousands of accounts writing erotic content overnight (I was banned for a month because someone was plagiarizing my content, and the bots thought that I was the one stealing).

I will survive this latest blow as well, partially because I'm very used to living on a low income, and partially because I spent the past half decade trying to diversify as much as Amazon will allow me with their exclusivity requirement. Audible (owned by Amazon) is also currently keeping me alive.

What will change moving forward...

Some authors are desperately holding out hope that the past two weeks have been a glitch, but I'm 99% sure that they've simply changed what counts as a 'page read'. This was probably done to combat the sheer volume of AI content being published daily. Kindle Unlimited has always been a 'pot' that is shared by all authors. The payout is divided amongst the authors based on how many pages readers read. With SO MUCH AI content being shat out, they had to respond somehow. Sadly, there is no way for them to detect or prove what is AI and what isn't. I imagine this is the beginning of the end of the KU program as we know it, paying out based on page reads.

The red in the graph I shared above is hard sales at regular price. As of May 14th, hard sales are the largest chunk of my income. In fact, print sales (the grey line) is starting to even rival Kindle Unlimited.

So spending seven straight days writing a single book up to 25,000 or 30,000 words is probably no longer profitable. I will probably not be writing content that long anymore if the value of a page read is so low.

I MAY even consider going back to how I published in 2016: two shorter books per week, around 12,000 words each. I'm keeping a close eye on how this is developing--but something will have to change if I'm going to survive.

Patreon has been very good to me, especially over the past year. So I will probably be posting more exclusive content here--more books like Loyalty Test, which are written for Patreon and Patreon only. Publishing Loyalty Test brought a lot of new members here. I am considering publishing one shorter 12,000 word book to Amazon each week, and one 12,000 spicier book to Patreon each week.

This would be good news for you! Though I have to test it out before committing, because it may be more work than I can handle to be consistent.

I will probably stop generating illustrations for new releases. Yes, the images in my latest books are AI-generated. But generating them is time consuming, taking many hours to make for a book. The reason I include images is to remain competitive with the volume of AI content being published. Adding images increases my page count, and more pages meant more payout--but not so much as of May 14th. Now, it's probably not worth the extra time commitment when I could be writing exclusive content for Patreon.

It REALLY seems like Patreon is my future, with Amazon constantly reducing payouts. Patreon has been so consistently good to me. Right now, Patreon only makes me about 30% of what I make on Amazon, but I will probably put more effort into growing my catalogue here moving forward, because Patreon is safe and Amazon is totally unpredictable.

I'm sure many of you noticed the disappearance of names like Ava Hayes (a good friend of mine), DL Savage, Kenzie Hayes... Amazon changes forced them to find different work, and they no longer have time to write. It's sad. At least two more big names are now about to join them. This is what I love doing, so I'm going to do everything I need to do to avoid that fate.

So, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what I've said here--particularly in regards to the shorter book length moving forward. 12,000 words is what I was writing between 2015-2018. Maybe you've been around that long and remember... I hope this isn't a dealbreaker for many of you; I just can't commit an entire week to writing a book that won't make me enough money to buy food.

I'm sorry to hear that Amazon is slashing your nominal income, especially given that inflation has slashed the real value of everyone's nominal income. Inflation might indeed be the reason that Amazon changed the pay algorithm.to try to compensate for inflation cutting its real income growth. I hope things turn around and get better for you.

As usual the people making the big money have little regard for the people CREATING the content that provides their income. Their bottom line takes priority and there are hundreds of authors waiting to join hands with the big A. I hope they change their algorithms to allow yourself and all other authors to make a decent profit from their hard work without working 18 hour days. Best of luck in the future and keep up the great work you do.

This sux. I hope they figure it out soon. I liked your idea of a 12k word story for amazon and then a 12k for patreon. But instead of separate books, make the Amazon version x rated and then make the Patreon version xxx rated and 15k. Good luck. I love your writing!

I hate that they're making all your lives difficult yet again. I have missed Ava and Dana's stories (though I've been getting updates on her Girl Games progress). Write whatever is the best model for you to make a living at this . John's idea of making two versions of a story, like an R and unrated movie, sounds like it might allow you to get more done in less time. Shorter content is perfectly fine if that's what works. Bottom line, we want you to be able to write for a living, and joined here to help you do that, however we can. Do what you need to do. You keep writing, we'll keep reading.

I'm sorry to hear about this, but thank you for trying to find a way to continue the stories. Although the illustrations are fun, I would be fine without them. I love reading the books more. I will continue to support you in any way I can. Keep up the great work.

Just updated my Patreon level with you. Hopefully the rest of your supporters can afford to do the same.

Hi Nikki - whoa that's alot and super upsetting for creative artists like yourself and very sad for other writers and artists. I'm interested in what you described about the KU 'pool' and how that works ... say that 10,000 people pay $10/mo for a Kindle Unlimited subscription - that's $100,000. On any given month, those 10,000 people might download and read any number of 'pages' ... doesn't matter how many actual 'books' are downloaded - all that matters for writers to be compensated is how many pages of your creative work are actually consumed (read) - I understand that putting images on the page might help get more page reads but even that seems like a trade off now that you point out doesn't pay back. If all writers are compensated $0.001 (1 tenth of a penny) for each page - and there is $100,000 dollars to split up per author's collective writing - that's 100,000,000 pages of writing consumed per month - doesn't matter if it's Nikki Crescent or James Patterson - any writer submitting their work to be compensated by the 'page pool' - gets their cut of the total monthly $ determined by Amazon (presumably based on all KU subscribers)... if that's right - I get you ... the ChatGPT deuce pretend writers have every incentive to try to boost their volume of possible pages to read.

Faith Blooms

In the end, it's the story that matters and that your readers are into your story from first to last page - it's easy to pick out the ChatGPT writers in the trans genre but what you are saying is very broad and you're so right that selling your writing as digital works (the red line) and supplementing that by having your Patreon followers makes all the sense in the world.

Faith Blooms

what can we, your loyal Patreo writers do to help boost your exposure on Patreon? what can we do to boost your 'likes' for your digital download sales on Amazon and other sites?

Faith Blooms

I'm working with a few artists (mostly animators/video story tellers) to help find revenue streams for them - the world needs unique creative content writers and good people like you Nikki!

nikkicrescent

You're totally correct except for one detail. The pool isn't determined by how many people subscribe to the KU program; they set a limit that doesn't change, and the number is arbitrary. It's much less than the total $$ they earn from KU subs.

nikkicrescent

There isn't a whole lot that can be done that I know. One 'issue' with Patreon is that, if you produce content for adults, then you can't appear in their search algorithm. So the only way people can find this Patreon is through my books, and the only place that sells my books is Amazon, so I still will be relying on Amazon to convert readers to Patreon. Some authors 'cheat' with their Patreon and claim they don't write adult content so that they come up in the search. I COULD do this too, but I don't want to be breaking any rules, because, obviously, I do write adult content. At some point, I will probably have to make myself a website that can direct traffic here. Also social media pages, and then I'll have to figure out SEO optimization and whatnot... maybe even some sort of TikTok thing or something. That's never been something I'm good at, so I'm really hoping that Amazon will continue to 'host' my content, even if it's not paying good money. Because right now, I have more readers than ever before. Sadly, the payout is worse than it's (literally) ever been. But more readers = more Patreon subscribers, so there's that.

$0.001/page is $1 per thousand pages or $10 for 10k pages. I probably do read that much, but that includes Patreon and webnovel reads... and if you assume it takes a minute to read a page that's roughly a full week of doing nothing but reading... monthly. Somebody is messing with the page read numbers and I doubt that it's you. It looks like you've been caught up in a mistargeted attempt to correct the problem. (Personally I do have a KU sub but most of my books are purchased outright.)

Did they change this so it affects your audible books also?
