It's been a bit of a rough past two months for me, as many of you know. First, my books were banned from Amazon. Then, after weeks of publishing to Smashwords and Draft2Digital, I was banned from those sites as well. I came to learn that all three sites (Amazon, Smashwords, and D2D) have recently implemented AI content reviewers, which go through entire manuscripts to search for content that violates policy... so loads of authors, like myself, have been suddenly banned, mostly because of out-of-context 'violations'. On Smashwords, there was apparently a 'flashback' scene in a ten year old story I wrote, and while it didn't say there were underaged characters in it, it was apparently 'insinuated'. Likewise on Amazon, it seems (as far as I can tell) that the AI detected nudity on one of my covers and deemed it 'pornographic'. There wasn't nudity, but a skin-coloured garment... it doesn't matter though because they won't entertain my appeal. Yet another case of AI making a mistake but taking no accountability.

As some of you know, I never wanted to use AI. I have never used it for writing (Chat GPT, etc), but I did use it to make covers for about eighteen months. I will admit that I got a bit carried away with using it, though I would like to explain why--and I would like to explain why I no longer will use it in any capacity.

Part of the reason I was terminated from Amazon (according to the vague email I got in termination) was from 'multiple past violations'. Now, I never actually did have any violations that I know of--except for five instances where models complained to Amazon and claimed that I did not have the rights to use their images. The first three times this happened, I went through the trouble of digging out the stock photo licenses and provided them to Amazon, and proving that I did indeed own the rights, which was time-consuming. The next two times it happened, I just didn't feel like dealing with it, so I just changed the cover images. This was a mistake--I know now--because I'm guessing Amazon counted those two instances as copyright violations, and so this 'pornographic cover detected' instance was the third strike that took me out...

So switching to AI covers seemed like the best solution at the time, because the AI image websites were very clear that the generator keeps all rights. My sale went up within days of switching to AI covers, and so I got a bit carried away, thinking that's what people wanted: more of the super-sexy AI models. That's when I started making NSFW pics for Patreon, and that brought many of you here (so I'm sorry to those of you who still want that content now, as I won't be producing more of that for reasons I'm going to explain further into this post).

Around this time, Chat GPT started being able to produce fiction. I heard about authors making entire novels in an afternoon using it. Then, within a couple of months, Amazon's payout-per-page started dropping drastically, because the market was being flooded with content. Some authors were releasing 3-5 books each week. Still now, there are tens of thousands of AI-generated books being published each week to Amazon, and there's nothing Amazon can do about it, because it doesn't go against their guidelines, and it never will because there's no way of 'proving' what's made with AI and what isn't, even if it seems obvious.

So now, the pay-per-page payout is less than half of what it was eighteen months ago, making it even harder to survive as a self-published author.

My solution to this was to start including images in my books. An image, to Amazon, was worth 250 words, so by generating 30 images in each book, I was essentially doubling my page count and making up the loss in page reads. This also brought in many new readers who preferred illustrated books.

I never liked AI, but it was hard not to be happy about how it was improving my sales...

Other authors in the trans-romance realm have, for the past decade, imitated me. If you've been around long enough here, you've probably seen this yourself. I'm not bragging about it, but it's been that way for a long, long time. So after a few months of incorporating AI imagery into my workflow, the other authors started doing the same. Now, most of them are doing it.

But they're taking it a step further than me, which I have to admit, breaks my heart a little bit.

I received a few messages over the past two weeks informing me that a certain author has been using AI to write her books. I was sent screenshots of the prose, and it's sadly pretty obvious that it's true. I'm a bit stunned that someone who has been doing this almost as long as me, with a very large fan base, would do this. I'm not going to name names.

This comes just a few weeks after another author I'm close with admitted to me in a private chat that they've been using AI to write the entirety of their books for many months now, and they've supposedly worked out their 'prompts' to create content that is perfectly passable as genuinely written content.

When my Amazon books were banned because of an AI reviewer, my AI-rose-tinted glasses were shattered and I no longer wanted anything to do with it. So you've probably noticed my book covers are no longer AI models. I've gone back to using stock models, and I'm just going to take the risk of coming across some angry model who regrets signing the consent form; I'm saving copies of each photo license to an easy to access drive in case I need to refer to them quickly.

Sadly, sales are down... way down. My sales are lower than they've been since 2013, back when I had a full-time job and was doing this as a little fun side hobby. I guess people prefer the AI girls.

I'm insanely grateful to have this Patreon page. I'm super grateful to have fans here supporting me; if this page didn't exist, I would possibly be homeless right now? My Patreon income is currently my only income while I try to get things established on Google Play, and helping Nicole C get established on Amazon... Combined, Google Play and Amazon are currently only good for about $25/day.

And because of the AI-driven market saturation, I probably won't ever be able to get back to where I was. Before, I had almost 10,000 Amazon subscribers after over ten years of consistent publishing. Now, when I put out a new book, it falls out of the top 100 in trans romance within a day or two. I have books that have made less than $40.

I won't turn to tools like Chat GPT to try to release more books, or to make my books longer so they make more page-read money. I just won't do it. So, sadly, for the first time since 2014, I've gone out and gotten a job (actually an apprenticeship that will be a job in a few months). I'm officially going to be doing publishing part-time: weekends and evenings.

I'm grateful that I got to do this full-time for a whole decade. Because of AI, I don't see the possibility to ever return to doing this full-time again.

I’m somewhat heartbroken for you over this and the theft you’ve also endured. I’ve even bought your collections even when I had all the separate stories. And were I wealthier I would buy them again on google. Working in the graphics industry I foresee the same outcome in a short time ahead. Artists of all kinds are going to be in trouble. And people wonder why I recommend they go into plumbing. Could be a while before a computer fixes your leaky faucet. (Of course robotics may screw that too. ) Hope the job works out.

I’m also heartbroken over your treatment by the bug companies, and them locking you out. You are the best trans-erotica author I’ve met over the years. I loved Dana Savage but I think she suffered a similar fate.

nikkicrescent

Yes, sort of. Dana was pushed out of publishing when the AI saturation really started to affect sales. Ava as well. In fact, I still talk to them both and assure you they're happy and well (I'm even talking to Ava right now).

I'm so sorry to hear this, your writing is much appreciated from my perspective. I've been listening to music and reading books since early 70-ish and always appreciated that there is a person/group behind everything. ❤️ I'll continue to support you always. 🙏

Carl Kincheloe

Nikki, please be assured that your Patreon fans will, as always, continue to support you. You deserve to be happy doing what you love most, so I hope that you'll find some satisfaction in a day job that you like, while continuing to write part time. I'm sure that you put your heart into your writing, unlike "authors" who let AI do it for them. They don't even deserve the title of Author, so if I can find out who they are, I'll avoid their "works".

Sadly this is the way this industry is going. All creativity is being outsourced to AI and the lack of quality is showing. I dabble in NSFW art and it’s bonkers how all the sites are shuttering that ability. The companies that offer payment services are dropping the vendors unless they install filters and restrictions. It’s not going to get better as the whole idea behind AI was to destroy original thought and creativity. I very much appreciate your work and I will happily take whatever you make as it’s still quality art.

The real motivation behind AI tools has raised its ugly head lately: employers get the work without the workers. It is not a matter of being a (neo)luddite. This isn't just another technology. This is something specifically designed to replace people, to replace the "cost of the workforce". It is not a consequence of the technology, but its intent. For amazon, losing writers is cheaper than paying for actual reviewers. And "writers" who use AI to write their books will argue that the "creative" part, the one having the original idea, is still them, because they are the ones writing the prompts. Kinda? But for how long? I'm a lawyer, and I keep hearing about AI replacing lawyers and, yes, it will happen in more and more cases. Until we get to a point were the cost of convicting an innocent person is acceptable in lieu of all the efficiency and sure judges and lawyers also sometimes convicted innocent people. Because there are judges already using AI to decide. The saddest part is that this is planned. That's what this new wave of AIs was designed to do. This is not a sad consequence.

nikkicrescent

Sadly, I've had recent conversations with the authors using it, and they said exactly that: "It's still my ideas, and it's writing it the way I would write it, it's just doing it faster." Sad.

Tim

I’m sorry to hear that, hope things get better soon. You’re the best. 👍

AFAIK current case law is that AI-generated content is not covered by copyright. At all. It's like the photo taken by a monkey a few years ago - no human creative input means no copyright; filling in the prompt doesn't count. So those using AI tools to author content are cutting their own throats. ... In any case, it's sad to hear that you can no longer rely solely on your passion to earn a living, although I'm glad to hear you haven't decided to abandon authorship altogether. Hope things work out for you (and hope you can also find joy in your new job.)

Patrick Carey

I'm glad they're doing well. I did like their work and I've been keeping up with Dana’s video game progress.

Trans Raider

I am so sorry to hear that all of this happened to you, and to the transgender genre authors - and the actual genre itself. I can’t stand AI, in my opinion it is intellectual property theft.

ShoutFidgety

I didn't know D.L. Savage stopped writing ebooks. She was one of the first authors I loved on transgender romance.

The cover art of your work may certainly be a factor, but there is also the loss of your 'name brand', if you get what I mean. Since your work is no longer listed under the pseudonym your readers are familiar with, they can't simply look at a title and say, 'oh, this should be a good read.' Instead, they have to decide whether they should go back and reread the works in their digital library or take a chance on a 'new' author's work. I mean, unless you have some way to contact them or they're already subscribed to your patreon, there's no way for them to know that your books are still going out under your new name.

M4C1

Also, you could consider branching out into non-erotic fiction of some sort. I am not an author myself, nor do I have any connections in the publishing business, but based on what I've read of your content you are one of a few authors I read in this particular genre that probably have the skills to write an interesting novel. It would certainly take more effort, but a physical book may not face as many issues with AI screening. Who knows, a publishing company might actually be beneficial in this case.

M4C1

I probably should have posted the above comment as a reply in my first one to this post, but since I don't comment often I hope this is ok. In any case, living is, unfortunately, not a simple task and it only grows more complicated it seems. I hope you do well in your training for your new job. Regardless of whatever you wind up doing with your patreon account, do your best to take care of yourself and I wish you good luck in your endeavors.

I can understand people using AI for convenience but I dislike it. I think when a person creates something they put a part of themselves into the work, a soul as it were. This is lost with AI work, it just feels wrong. I hope that you can continue to write and still get enjoyment from it. Personally, I prefer hand-drawn artwork whether done on a computer or physically. Some of the AI work does look good and I have seen the work that a friend puts into their pieces. It is a skill that has to be developed but not to the level of a hand-drawing artist. I think I like drawn work because it is not limited by real-world limits, the only limit is the imagination of the artist.

krissy

It wasn't luck or a coincidence that made you as successful as you are. And it certainly wasn't Amazon. It was your resourcefulness and your drive to be the best. We all love you babe - don't you dare lose faith in yourself over some silly nonsense like this AI fad. xoxoxo

Randy Montgomery

I really enjoy your stories. They are more romantic than sexual which strikes me deep in my soul. I'm early trans woman and I want to be a trans romance writer like you. I even started my first story. I don't use or like AI, preferring to write from the heart. I look forward to reading more of your stories.
