Maybe I should say lousy week.

My car stopped working, so I had it towed to a shop. Found out this morning that it's ready to be picked up! But the fix was 1500 bucks. ugh. Get home... laptop doesn't turn on! Drive an hour into the city to the Apple Store, wait in line. "We can fix it, but the hard drive is toast and it will be 1200 bucks." He told me there's a data recovery company in California, told me it would be a couple hundred dollars, so I phone them...

Between 1,000 and 4,000 USD!!! Just to recover the drive.

So I phoned a friend, got a loaner laptop (still getting used to the keyboard), and now I'm assessing what was lost. Is it worth recovering? Luckily, I back up regularly (some of you may remember a scare I had a couple years ago).

I only lost one book: the one that I was working on. So I don't think it's worth paying to recover the drive... but I was three days into the book.

It's just one of those days that makes you want to curl up in a ball in bed. That's what I might just do! They can't fix my laptop until late next week, and I'm not sure yet if I can write on this little thing. I'm averaging a typo every sentence right now.  How do people use such tiny laptops?

Everybody please pray for a better September because August has been a rough ride!

Just in case, a new baseline MacBook Air runs just under $1,000 USD. Might it be better to spend the money that way? You could then "recover" everything from your backup to the new computer and have the advantage of brighter, better with a warranty.

This whole Summer has been horrible. Getting Covid, paying through the nose on grocery items and yard work. Calgon take me away!

Hey, im sorry that you went through that honey. It always comes in threes.

Aargh. Too much all at once, I know the feeling. Some poor future MC is going to have this same bad luck, I can tell. I hope you can sort everything out.

1200 bucks sounds REALLY expensive for a HDD. Here is a 2TB macbook compatible drive on amazon for much less https://www.amazon.com/Notebook-Laptop-Drive-Playstation-MacBook/dp/B010CBASS0/ref=sr_1_5?crid=1UZ1DTJSXRJ8V&keywords=hdd+for+macbook&qid=1661443553&sprefix=hdd+for+macbook%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840 I'm not sure what the folks at the apple store tried, I'm not an expert on Macs either. But it may be possible that it is only the boot sector on the drive that is damaged, i.e. if you remove the drive and connect it via usb to another computer you might find the rest of your data intact. I'm not sure what your existing HDD interface is, but this cable covers any interface I think apple uses to USB and it's worth a shot, since $18US is a lot cheaper than you were quoted for data recovery services. https://www.amazon.com/BENFEI-Drive-Adapter-Cable-Compatible/dp/B07JGT17B8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=XUS5HZPNRCAI&keywords=sata%2Bto%2Busb&qid=1661447945&sprefix=sata%2Bto%2Busb%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-1-spons&th=1 I hate tiny keyboards ...and tiny screens. Maybe your loaner laptop could be connected to an external full size keyboard and monitor though. ..If you (or one of your friends) happened to have anything like that laying around.

If she had to wait in line for an hour she probably did not get their full undivided attention on the matter. Should be able to get a ergonomic keyboard and mouse and plug in to your loaner. If and when you can get your computer back in operation I would recommend an external hard drive to save your work daily so you can access what you worked so tirelessly on and non of you MC will end up in cyber hell again. Bad things do seem to come in threes so you should be good for a while 1- sick, 2- car, 3 computer.

I will pray you have a better September let me know if you need some help

Alana

I totally agree with Darryl on backing up regularly to external storage. This is your livelihood after all. But because of that, you may not want to trust all your data to a single hard drive, but rather invest in a raid storage solution. Raid 5 spreads your data across multiple drives, if A single drive fails, you can replace it and the data can be automatically recovered using the data on the remaining drives. here is the one I use https://www.westerndigital.com/products/network-attached-storage/wd-my-cloud-pro-series-pr4100#WDBNFA0000NBK-NESN

I'm pretty sure they mean the motherboard in the computer. That would explain the 1200 repair quote (Still sounds expensive to me, but less outrageous than for simply replacing a HDD). ...it may be cheaper and/or more practical to replace rather than repair the overall computer. It sounds to me like that's what they were likely trying to tell you. ...but you may still be able to recover your data (without paying the thousands of dollars you were quoted for data recovery) by simply removing the HDD from your old computer and connecting it externally by USB to your new one.

Dang, sorry about the hard luck there. It seems like every real life update from you is just bad news now. I hope it gets much better and the next update is about you winning the lottery.

And just as Nikki was about to head to bed to get some sleep and put this whole ordeal behind her for a few hours, her phone rang. Nikki almost didn't pickthe phone up, fearing more bad news. However, the ring was adding to the pain of her already starting migraine, so she reached for the landline receiver to just shut the noise off. A soft male voice began speaking; and Nikki quickly knew that her streak of bad luck was breaking, as the caller began: "Mistress Nikki, I am a certified computer technician trained to work on all brands of computers. I would love to begin repairing your computer if you would pay me back in 3-4 feminization lessons! (Part 2 to be completed by Nikki - or perhaps be kept secret as a private experience)!

Most MacBook these days the logic board, hard drive, RAM, etc are all one piece now. If one part goes bad that whole unit needs to be replaced.

I hope I'm not coming off as a complainer! It hasn't all been bad. I did get that pole and that's been a lot of fun!

nikkicrescent

That sounds complicated but I will probably buy one as soon as I can afford one, because I have WAY TOO MUCH to lose sitting on one 8+ year old hard drive at the moment...

Alana

It sounds much more complicated and difficult than it actually is, I can probably walk you through it if needed.
