Sketchbook #004 - Game Logo (Patreon)

graphics design is my passion
Making a logo isn't that difficult. Making a good logo is hard; there's a reason why people's entire jobs is doing that.
After settling on a game name (more or less), I figured I could shoot for something in the middle.
I started by looking at the logo designs of other games. Pictured here are some of them.
I focused on the general shape, form, and layout first, disregarding color. I also redrew each logo example by hand - it's a good way at forcing me to pay attention to them, versus just CTRL+C CTRL+V.
(If you went to Day of the Devs recently, you might recognize a lot of these logos...)
I then just started jotting down some designs.
Lots of designs.
Eventually, I picked one general design, and started playing around with it in a digital art program, ending up with this:
The colors weren't too bad to figure out, since the game's UI style is pretty simple. I used the "desaturate everything and check the brightness" trick to make sure the important bits (the words) were the most visible.
A slight issue was that "Cutting Edge" by itself was a bit... generic. Fitting, yes, but even "cutting edge game" was unlikely to end with good results.
After a bit more debating (internal screaming at having to come up with yet another name), I tweaked the logo again.
Works for me.
P.S: The main font is "Curved Square" by Hawtpixel!
