Gun Chapter 31: Accepting Commission Again (Patreon)

After walking for about ten minutes, Wakasha arrived at the entrance of the Adventurers’ Guild.
He took a deep breath, adjusted his state of mind, then pushed open the doors and walked inside.
The guild hall was already bustling. Both quest boards along the sides of the hall were crowded with adventurers—some carefully reading commission details, some discussing the difficulty of quests with their companions, and others lining up to accept jobs. The place was packed with voices and noise.
Wakasha wasn’t distracted by the commotion. He straightened his back, swept his gaze across the hall, and headed straight for the commission counter.
Rather than competing with a crowd over the jobs posted on the public boards, it was better to go directly to one of the staff members like Kufuku and accept a quest that way.
There was some danger involved, of course, but Wakasha was already planning to hunt monsters anyway—especially commissions involving slimes or goblins. That way, he could complete the commission, earn bounty money, and gain experience all at once.
There were plenty of adventurers lined up at the commission counter too. Kufuku sat behind it, head lowered as she carefully organized commission slips. Her emerald eyes were focused and serious, and the cat ears atop her head twitched lightly, making her look especially cute.
A few other guild staff members were working beside her, busy receiving adventurers and answering their questions.
Wakasha quickly walked over, took his place at the end of the line, and waited patiently.
While waiting, his eyes drifted toward the quest boards on both sides of the hall, and he read through them carefully.
The boards were packed with commissions of all kinds: monster extermination, material collection, escort jobs, lost-item searches. The difficulties varied, and so did the rewards.
And these were only the jobs meant for non-class holders or ordinary class holders. Truly powerful adventurers went to the second floor of the guild to take jobs.
Wakasha focused mainly on the low-rank commissions, carefully filtering out the ones that suited him.
Very quickly, he found two that fit perfectly: one was to kill 20 goblins and collect their left ears as proof, with a reward of 8 silver; the other was to kill 30 slimes of any type and collect their slime as proof, also with a reward of 8 silver.
Neither commission was especially difficult, and both involved monsters he had already hunted before, so he had some experience dealing with them.
“These two, then.”
Wakasha made up his mind, and a faint smile appeared on his face.
Together, the two commissions paid 16 silver. If he completed them smoothly, that would be enough to buy another one or two basic 0-ring spell manuals, or save up toward better gear and supplies later.
Soon, it was Wakasha’s turn.
When Kufuku heard the movement, she quickly looked up. The moment she saw Wakasha, her emerald eyes lit up, a delighted smile spread across her face, and the cat ears on top of her head perked up happily. There was unmistakable joy in her voice.
“Mr. Wakasha! You’re here! Are you taking commissions again today?”
“Yeah, I’m planning to take two commissions today.”
Wakasha smiled and nodded, speaking gently.
“One is to kill 20 goblins and collect their left ears. The other is to kill 30 slimes and collect their slime. I’d like to take both.”
“All right, Mr. Wakasha. I’ll process them for you right away.”
Kufuku nodded quickly, her expression turning serious. She hurriedly took out two commission vouchers from under the counter, checked them carefully, wrote Wakasha’s name on them, then handed them over.
“Mr. Wakasha, these are the vouchers for the two commissions. Keep them safe. Once you complete the commissions, you can take these and the materials to the turn-in counter to claim your reward.”
Wakasha accepted the vouchers and carefully tucked them into his bag. Then he asked Kufuku,
“Kufuku, I want to ask—have there been any unusual monster changes recently in the muddy marsh or the outer edge of Chalk Forest? Things like mutated slimes or goblins?”
A serious look appeared on Kufuku’s face. She thought for a moment, then said,
“Mr. Wakasha, I heard one of the senior guild staff mention yesterday that a few mutated slimes have appeared in the muddy marsh recently. There aren’t many—usually just one or two in a colony—and they’re all low-rank mutations. They’re not too strong, so as long as you’re careful, you should be able to handle them.
As for the goblins on the outer edge of Chalk Forest, they’ve become a little more active lately too. There are quite a few small goblin squads now, each with about three to five goblins. No mutated goblins have been reported, so relatively speaking, it’s still fairly safe.”
She paused, then added with visible concern,
“But Mr. Wakasha, you really need to be careful.
Whether it’s mutated slimes or goblin squads, they’re still dangerous. Since you’re hunting alone, you absolutely mustn’t get greedy or push too far. If you run into danger, give up on the commission and come back. The reward doesn’t matter—your safety matters most.”
“The adventurer’s motto is not to rush recklessly into adventure!”
“I understand. Thanks, Kufuku. Don’t worry, I’ll be careful.”
Wakasha smiled and nodded.
“If there’s anything I don’t understand, I’ll come back and ask you.”
“No need to thank me, no need to thank me! It’s just my job!”
Kufuku hurriedly waved her hands, cheeks flushed red, her cat ears trembling lightly. She looked especially shy.
“Mr. Wakasha, you have to come back safely. I’ll be waiting here for you!”
“Okay.”
Wakasha answered with a smile, then turned and headed toward the guild doors.
After leaving the Adventurers’ Guild, he didn’t stop. He walked straight toward the town gate, planning to hunt slimes in the muddy marsh first and finish the slime commission before heading to the outer edge of Chalk Forest to hunt goblins and finish the goblin commission.
The muddy marsh was closer to White Earth Town, and there were more slimes there, making the hunt more efficient. It was also the perfect chance to raise his Slime Hunter passive a bit further.
The moment he stepped out of White Earth Town, the scenery changed instantly. The warmth and bustle of the town faded behind him, replaced by endless fields and woods. The air smelled of earth and fresh grass, and the breeze carried a cool freshness that sharpened the mind.
Wakasha adjusted the bag on his back, gripped the short sword at his waist, checked his direction, and then set off westward toward the muddy marsh at a brisk pace.
