BRING THE BEEF — DEVELOPMENT LOG #1 🥩💖 (Patreon)
Content
Pre-Alpha • August 2026
Hi guys!
I want to start keeping a proper development log for Bring the BEEF so I can share where the game currently stands, what I’m working on, what changes along the way, and even some ideas that get reworked or completely scrapped during development.
Bring the BEEF is a passion project. I’m trying to put into it all the mechanics and little details I love about cozy and exploration games and build the kind of game I’ve always wanted to play myself.
I want progression to constantly feel rewarding. Exploring should feel rewarding. Unlocking something should feel rewarding. Even the little interactions and clicks should feel satisfying.
At its heart, BEEF is meant to be a happy, colorful and heartwarming game, full of ridiculous humor, lovable characters, exploration, collecting, romance, and some surprisingly emotional stories along the way.
As of today, Bring the BEEF is officially in Pre-Alpha.
🥩 THE CURRENT SCOPE
The scope will continue evolving during development, but this is the current vision for the game:
🏝️ A Rebuildable Island
Your island acts as your home base.
As you meet characters and bring them back to the island, you’ll gradually rebuild it, restore buildings, unlock new activities and services, advance character stories, and gain access to new places to explore.
The island should visibly grow alongside your progress.
💖 Around 100 Characters
The current goal is approximately 100 characters.
I want the world to feel populated, interconnected and alive rather than having characters exist only for their individual routes.
Each character will have their own personality, relationships, story arc and progression, with many of their stories crossing over or connecting with other residents.
Obviously, 100 characters won’t magically appear in one update. 😅
The roster and individual stories will continue growing across releases.
🗺️ Around 10 Explorable Islands
The current plan includes roughly 10 islands and major destinations beyond your home island.
Traveling will be an important part of progression.
Different islands will introduce new characters, quests, stories, collectibles, materials, upgrades and locations to discover.
As the game progresses, the world itself should continue opening up.
✨ EXPLORATION & COLLECTIONS
Collections are going to be a major part of Bring the BEEF.
I want exploration to constantly give you little reasons to poke around, revisit places and wonder:
"Wait… what’s over there?"
The world operates on a day/night cycle, and certain discoveries, characters, events and collectibles may only appear under specific conditions or at certain times.
There will be lots of things to collect, and they won’t exist purely to fill a checklist.
Some collectibles will connect to:
Character progression
Quests
Island upgrades
Unlockable content
New activities
Exploration progression
Special rewards
The goal is for curiosity to almost always give you something back.
💬 A MORE INTERACTIVE VN
Bring the BEEF has a strong Visual Novel storytelling system, but I don't want it to feel like you're simply clicking through static walls of text.
I want scenes to feel as animated and interactive as I can reasonably make them.
Characters blink, react, move and change expressions. Dialogue boxes respond visually to characters and different types of dialogue. Scenes can include effects, sounds, transitions and interactive moments.
Most importantly:
Every scene should have a reason to exist.
I don't want endless filler conversations just to stretch playtime.
A scene should make you laugh, reveal something about a character, advance a relationship, move the story forward, unlock something, introduce a mystery—or hopefully several of those at once.
😂 THE TONE
Bring the BEEF is lighthearted and ridiculous most of the time, but that doesn't mean the characters won't have real emotional stories.
There will be comedy, romance, drama, friendship, adventure and plenty of absolutely stupid situations.
And yes…
There will absolutely be spicy BEEF moments. 🌶️🥩
But the priority will always be the game, its characters and its story first, rather than building everything around fan service.
I want you to care about these weirdos before anything else.
✅ CURRENTLY FUNCTIONAL
A lot of the foundational systems are already running in-game.
BASE UI & NAVIGATION
Functional game menus
Functional HUD
Functional Island Map
Functional World Map
Animated VN dialogue system
Dialogue UI that responds to character colors
Different presentation for dialogue, thoughts, yelling and other text types
Functional point-and-click exploration screens
⚙️ GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS
💖 Affinity System
The relationship/affinity system is being developed.
Character relationships can progress through multiple stages, with progression eventually connecting to character stories, interactions, scenes and other unlockables.
🎒 Inventory
A functional inventory system is being developed and organized into different item categories.
Items will eventually connect to exploration, collectibles, quests, character progression and island upgrades.
🏗️ Island Progression
The foundations for rebuilding and progressing the island are being developed.
The goal is for buildings to be more than decoration: restoring parts of the island should unlock new characters, activities, services, story progression and exploration opportunities.
🔎 Exploration
The point-and-click exploration system is functional and will continue expanding.
Different locations will eventually contain characters, discoveries, collectibles, interactive objects and events that can change depending on your progression and the time of day.
🚧 WHAT PRE-ALPHA MEANS
There is already a playable structure underneath the game, but a lot can still change.
UI layouts may be redesigned.
Systems may get expanded, simplified or completely replaced.
Characters may move around.
Mechanics I love today may get murdered next week because they weren't actually fun.
That's part of what I want these development logs to show.
Not just the polished final result, but how Bring the BEEF actually gets built.
I'll be sharing new systems, characters, locations, experiments, progress updates, things that worked, things that absolutely did not work, and occasionally some abandoned ideas that deserve to be publicly shamed.
There is still a LOT to build.
But it's finally starting to feel like the game I've had in my head.
And I can't wait to keep building it with you guys watching it grow. 💖🥩
Thank you for following the development of Bring the BEEF!
