After the Civil War, Reconstruction sought to remedy a deeply structurally racist antebellum South. But a movement sprung up dubbed the Lost Cause. It sought to rewrite Reconstruction and restructure the South to maintain white supremacy. Your hosts are Julian Feeld and Jon Gabrus.

The very moment I needed another podcast to paint to, superstructure came in clutch 🫡

I also never connected the literal meaning of antebellum, and I took Latin. Can’t say I passed, but I took it.

I like this and I pay for the extra episode, but the gag that the other guy is a rube is running thin, come on guys I know it’s a joke but it’s not fooling anyone 😬😬😬🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

This podcast is really good and I appreciate the succinct tackling of history and politics you are always doing on it. Even stuff I already knew gets some new insight and I'm learning some wild stuff I didn't know along the way

If anyone is interested you should watch Atun Shei on youtube. His series Checkmate, Lincolnites! is, in my personal opinion, a perfect, entartaining and comprehensive material talking about and debunking the Lost Cause myth

Counting or not counting Klan violence?

Strong disagree. I have both Reconstruction and The Second Founding both written by Eric Foner and I'm listening to this specifically bc of the levity and back and forth. We're all Gabrus not knowing about stuff (even though I suspect he does) about something. It makes dense topics accessible and keeps them from feeling like homework.

For the short bit that I live Burlington, North Carolina as a teen, I recall a cookout when my uncle's subordinate told me about the "War of Northern Aggression", i.e., the Civil War. I was smart enough to stay quiet and just smile at this explicit racist. My mom told me to stay quiet while I was in the south.

Pretty sure super crack was first created in the legendary highbrow film Frankenhooker.

What the US government did to John brown Vs Jefferson Davis is so wild. Now I get to add more info to my reconstruction lesson like how Jefferson Davis wrote a 1600+ page memoir. Insane
