It's easily the lowest rated episode of the show by the community at large, as you mentioned it just feels slower, and if I didn't know better then I'd almost acuse it of being a filler episode xD Regarding why Kamina was upset about how the beastmen combined, he elaborates on that way later just before they beat them. He says that "manly combining isn't just some cheap love affair where you are free to just come and go as you like!". I assume he is really more bothered that the mechs just sorta lock together rather then combine, they are attached to each other but not one single unit the way that Gurren Lagann is one unit. Maybe that's also one reason why he wants the act of combining to be a more violent crash between two forces that creates a single entity, rather then the feeling of attaching the head to the body. This does fit with some of the general themes that I at least read into the show as a whole, but I'll let you explore that as you watch the show xD

Despite what I said, Episode 4 isn't BAD, it just kinda...exists. I loved the reaction and discussion! Oh, and the little pig mole is named Boota. Edit: I removed a very slight spoiler, sorry about that.
