You talked a bit about the writting process, while obviously non of us were in the room, we can speculate based on interviews that were done and based on the final product. A lot of the people who were responsible for Gurren Lagann also worked on FLCL from what I know (highly recommend if you haven't watched it, it's SUPER short), and in both projects, their apprach was super chaotic and frantic, but tied together with clear themes set at the beginning of the show. So from what I know they basically started with the core artistic themes that they want to explore, then they set some specific things they want to happen in specific episodes, which were paced out and defined based on those themes, but that was pretty much it for "planning". Once those things were established they kinda just got super excited about their ideas and made alterations to the narrative constantly. There was a lot of "Wait, what if we make this even MORE awesome!". What made this work is the way that they always tied everything back to those core themes, so once you have watched everything, it feels really like the entire shows speaks with a single voice about a core set of themes which are carried through in the story, the characters, the art and even the music, but at the same time it feels soooo frantic and chaotic.

Just a reminder that there are 2 versions of Episode 6. There is the unedited version and the edited recap version. Both are Dubbed thankfully but finding the unedited version can be rather tricky. I'm not sure where you are watching the show but it seems like "official" sources generally have the edited version, so you may have to "sail the seas" to watch the unedited version. Thankfully you can tell pretty early on in the episode whether it's the recap or the unedited version. If, right after the opening, it starts with Simon and Kamina talking rather than the usual "This is the tale of a man" narration thing then it's the edited version. If needed I know where you can watch the unedited version. Great reaction and discussion as always! TL;DR If the Episode 6 you are watching starts with Simon and Kamina talking rather than the usual "This is the tale of a man" you are watching the edited recap version.
