Familia prepare your tissues for this one! 🤧 Ae-sun and Gwan-sik continue trying to make a life for themselves in Jeju Island, fighting for their love. Gwan-sik working long hard hours and Ae-sun being mistreated by his family… until something had to change…💔

We also got to see more glimpses of the second time line in 1993, and watching Ae-sun’s daughter take for granted the sacrifices they made broke our hearts 😢. Seeing the timelines side by side completely changed how we’re seeing this story and our parents. Feeling extra gratitude after this episode 💖

Sorry for the lengthy ment ahead , here’s what I have read online: The tricycle scene, where Gwansik buys a brand new one instead of making his daughter use the old one, reflects Ae-sun’s wish for their child to experience everything she wants without limitation. This moment shows his willingness to give his daughter something new, rather than binding her to what’s been handed down hinting at how he wants to break cycles of restriction or obligation from older generations This idea connects closely to the table scene. When Gwansik turns away from his grandmother’s table where his father is also seated and chooses instead to eat with his wife and daughter, it symbolizes a break from tradition. The grandmother’s table represents the past: old customs, expectations, and the weight of ancestry. By sitting with his wife and daughter, Gwansik shows that his priority now lies with the family he has created. He is stepping out from under that inherited control, taking the lead as the head of his own household, and choosing to build a new path with them at the center. Both moments reflect Gwansik claiming small freedoms like choosing how to parent, choosing where to sit, and choosing what kind of family dynamic to create within his own little family.

I love watching this for the second time with you familiaa! Let me give you my perspective about the infinite crying with this kdrama, in case it makes you feel better. I had to process it with my therapist because I was surprised by my constant tears, and I'm definitely not a crier. 😅 Every episode made me cry more and more, because I kept making connections with my own experience. I'm a 94 kid from a small country in South America, and I'm definitely a Geummyeong, and my parents and grandparents are Aesun and Gwangsik. Every episode just made them more heroes and human at the same time. It was so much love, it became overwhelming, so I cried. It was like I was able to 'feel' their love for me for the first time. So this time watching with you guys, every time I cry, I kinda smile too. Every tear we shed is a way to love and honor our loved ones. Let's just say we have a "weekly crying time" in our schedule thanks to this series 😂 P.S.: There are some videos on YouTube of the actors reacting to some scenes of the series that maybe you could watch when you finish it. Spoiler: they also cry 😅

Omg why do I keep torturing myself by watching this with you again. My eyes are swollen. But I'll tell you what, familia don't worry about the next episode (ep5). It's still heavy drama of course. Still a lot of painful stuff but if there is an episode you need to mentally prepare yourself completely, it's not the next episode. It's episode 6. And it's not what you think...but it's even more painful. Way too painful. So, make sure you are mentally prepared. Once you're on episode 6, make sure you have a funny BTS content to watch after or you can rewatch K-Pop Demon Hunters. You also might need more than a box of tissue.

Hey Guys! I never realized how much more fun k-dramas can be when you watch them with ARMYs, it seriously feel like a family get-together for movie night! Also, I was wondering if you'd consider watching the kdrama 'Love next door'? It's not heavy as the Glory, Vincenzo, WLGTs, but there are so many relatable things such as family values, guilt, resentment, depression, loyal friendships, and childhood friends to lovers! You experience a whole spectrum of emotions! Most important, the male lead is the whole 'GREEN FOREST'!!!!

After moving into her in-laws’ house, Ae-soon is forced by her mother-in-law and her elders to perform 108 bows, and even up to 3,000 bows. On the surface, it looks like a simple Buddhist ritual, but in reality, it is a way to test whether the daughter-in-law is humble, obedient, and meeting the family’s expectations. Moreover, the phrase “You should have children one after another and fulfill your duties” isn’t just about giving birth. It reflects the traditional values and patriarchal control that expect a daughter-in-law to dedicate her life to her family and husband. Looking at this scene, Ae-soon’s 108 bows are not merely acts of prayer or atonement. They symbolize the pressure and oppression she faces within her in-laws’ household, as well as her endurance and quiet resistance. After finishing her 108 bows and enduring her mother-in-law’s scolding, Ae-soon touches the nose of the dolharubang—a small, symbolic act full of meaning. In Jeju tradition, touching a dolharubang’s nose is believed to bring luck, health, and even blessings for childbirth. While enduring her mother-in-law’s scolding, Ae-soon lightly strikes the nose of the dolharubang, a small act of rebellion. Understanding the dolharubang’s sacred significance, her mother-in-law then quietly offers a prayer after Ae-soon’s gesture. Grandmother Gwan-sik burns hair as a traditional ritual to ward off bad luck and pray for her family’s well-being. The “Baby Boomers” generally refer to the generation born right after World War II up until the early 1960s. Their birth years are roughly 1946 to 1964, a period marked by a sharp rise in birth rates following the war, which is why they are called the “Baby Boom” generation. In Korea, during the Joseon Dynasty and earlier periods, there was a strong preference for sons, as having many sons was important for maintaining the family line and inheritance. However, the saying that “even one daughter is as precious as ten sons” reflects a slight challenge to this son-preference, emphasizing the value and preciousness of children regardless of gender. Since a long time ago, it has been important to respect the elderly in Korea. And there has been discrimination between men and women. So when you look at Ae-soon's family, they are eating separately at another table. They eat in groups of adults in the family, men, mother-in-law / Ae-soon, Geum-myeong, and Gwan-sik's mother. So, the act of Gwan-sik turning to Ae-soon and eating at that time must have been a great consolation to Ae-soon. (Especially she living in in-laws). However on the contrary, it would have been a bad behavior for adults in the family. Also, the reason Ae-soon’s mother-in-law told her not to mix the beans in the kitchen is that keeping the beans on one side makes it easier to give them to the men and the elders. These days, it’s no longer a strict rule that has to be followed, but the tradition hasn’t completely disappeared. Instead, it has remained more as a cultural habit. For example, during holidays when many relatives gather, families may still eat separately—not because of the old meaning, but simply for convenience. "So I had no idea that my impoverished childhood that even that humble childhood was only possible because they built such asturdy fortress." It was heartbreaking because it contained, all at once, the hardship of childhood, the sacrifices that made that hardship bearable, and the belated feelings of gratitude and guilt. When Ae-soon, her mother-in-law, and Gwan-sik’s grandmother were arguing in the yard, Gwan-sik appeared holding College Entrance Exam Preparation Workbook 2. There was already one copy in the room, and he had bought the second one for Ae-soon. It seems that Gwan-sik is always thinking about Ae-soon. I’ve been replaying the scene where Gwan-sik’s mother and grandmother corner Ae-soon over and over to explain it, and I feel like I’m losing my mind. When Ae-soon was pregnant with her second child, three aunts came to her house to help with the household chores. They also prepared healthy meals for Ae-soon, who was expecting. The aunts were taking care of her in place of Gwang-rye and the others. IU adjusted her voice according to the role. When narrating as Geum-myeong, she recorded in a lower tone. When portraying Ae-soon, her voice sounded a bit more childlike.
