Ohh this episode...pure trauma...IU and Bo-Gum are such phenomenal actors...no wonder they got all deserving awards Reposting the comment from previous ep: We do see their first son in one of the earlier episodes when Gwan-sik's sister was at their place and he brought chicken and the son was on the table eating..so I am pretty sure we would see him again (I have not completed the drama after this ep lol so I am not sure) I am so loving your reactions to the series familia... I have not watched the whole series yet so I am gonna continue it watching with you guys.....I really hope that your K-Drama journey continues after this as well...there are so many amazing dramas that you will not regret watching Also...a fun fact (not really)... Bo-Gum in real life does not have a family picture (from what I know his mother passed away when he was young) so him taking the picture in the drama always reminds me of that..he was so emotional when he told that on one of the shows I would love to watch your reactions to some of the videos (after the show ends) where the cast reacted to the show PS.: personal wish lol...maybe a reaction to Bo-Gum on IU's palette..it was the first ep of the show

🍊 i definitely cried with you! in my opinion, rather than pure devastation, this drama just vividly illustrates an example of the ups and downs of life. each character in this story is very human - they each have their faults but also redeeming qualities. even with the characters we don't like, they are all doing their best with what they know within the lives they're living. we also see that they all learn to live with the choices they've made along the way. this drama emphasizes that really bad and upsetting things inevitably happen, but there are small pockets of happiness within it that make life worth living. i agree that this drama makes us think and relate and gives us a chance to be grateful for our own lives/families. thank you for another great episode and i can't wait for the next!

🍊 This is my third my watching this ep and I still have balls of tissues next to me. But yeah, I love how this drama shows what real life is and despite the hardships, there's still happiness and strength in the simple things. And watching this with you familia makes me even love this drama more. Thanks for the amazing reaction, as always 🍊💕

Yue

🍊 Man, everytime you took a break I took a break. The amount of tissues used was not pretty at all. I also had to keep reminding myself it is a K-drama film. 🤣 I firmly believe this serie was created just to increase the selling of tissues. Anyway, hopefully this was the worse thing in that happens, so ser you next week, familia! 🫶

Bulletproof Girl

Yes, finally! We all survived the hardest episode and now I'm excited to watch the rest! Looking forward to next week's episode familia! Thank you for not giving up on this. It honestly took me months before I continued to watch after this episode when I watched it for the first time but now, I'm just super excited to watch the next ones!

mariwintermoon

I love this k-drama so much. Every part of it makes you see the humanity in everyone, even in painful episodes. Community and empathy are powerful. There are still hard times later but this was the worst, and it's now behind us. Let's just say that watching this episode makes you even more aware and grateful when you see the next ones. I also love how they transition through the years to explain different situations. At the end of the series you end up having a full timeline in your head.

Serendipityinthesea

Familia would it be possible to make the subtitles a little bit bigger please? I watch from my tv and its a little bit too far for my eyes to see properly. I would definitely appreciate it! 💜🫶🏼🍊

Typhoon Carmen, which landed in Jeju Island in 1978, serves as the backdrop. It was the only typhoon to reach the Korean Peninsula that year. According to records, 1,750 houses were submerged or destroyed, and 33 people reportedly died. In actual history, only one person died in Jeju due to Typhoon Carmen in 1978. The scene where Ae-sun’s mother, Gwang-rye, barely survives in the sea and comes back out of the water was not originally in the script but was added later. After losing Dong-myeong, Kwan-sik leaves some food while eating, saving it for the children. The soup is squid soup (ojingeo-guk). He takes the squid out to give to the kids and only drinks the broth himself. He has continued doing this since Geum-myeong was born. The line, "Our Dong-myeong died because of me," ln Korean, she said as "l killed Dong-myeong." This sounds as if Ae-sun herself directly killed Dong-myeong, which makes it even more heartbreaking. Ae-sun’s boarding house landlord grandfather gave her an octopus, which he washed with salt. In Korea, octopus is often washed with salt to remove slime and fishy odor. He likely did this so that pregnant Ae-sun could eat it more comfortably. Na Min-ok (Ae-sun’s stepmother, her father’s new wife) was not purely a bad stepmother. After marrying Byung-chul and raising four children herself, she recognized Ae-sun’s effort in raising Byung-chul’s children from his previous marriage. She gradually grew closer to Ae-sun, sharing a bond over Geum-myeong’s birth. When Ae-sun came to collect her things, Na Min-ok gave her a “moral scholarship(Do-ui-jeok Jang-hak-geum)” in the form of a bicycle, clothes, and other necessities. Before moving, she even visited Ae-sun’s boarding house landlord to leave another “scholarship” to cover three months of rent. The interesting part is that the landlord, who was hard of hearing, wrote it down as the “Do Hee-jung Scholarship(Hee jung sounds like a person’s name.)”, but Min-ok, embarrassed that her inability to read Korean might be discovered, pretended to understand and roughly confirmed it. Because she only checked that the numbers matched, it was passed on to Ae-sun as if it had been given by the Do family. Byung-chul (Ae-sun’s stepfather) was not a bad person because he allowed Ae-sun to live at home until adulthood and sent her to high school. Even though it wasn’t university, supporting her education was above the societal norm for the time. He understood Ae-sun’s situation—coming back from living as a servant at her maternal grandparents’ house—and treated her fairly. He intentionally nicknamed her “Sun-ae” to match the “Sun” character used in his other children’s names.(The other children’s names were and Sun-nam and Sun-bong.) Later, when the family moved, he didn’t interfere with the cabbage field, originally owned by Gwang-rye, and Min-ok paid Ae-sun’s rent. In the early 1950s, only 30% of high school-age Koreans attended high school, and for women, it was just 20%. So Ae-sun’s achievements and later positions were considered highly accomplished for her education level at the time. Geum-myeong attends Seoul National University, the most prestigious and competitive university in Korea. Regarding the conversation between Geum-myeong and her boyfriend, Young-beom: Nonsan is a city in Korea. Nonsan Training Center is a primary military training facility for new recruits in the South Korean army, located in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do. Recruits undergo 5–6 weeks of basic training before their graduation ceremony, after which they are assigned to their respective units. Young-beom is about to enlist the next day. Geum-myeong’s line, “How can I go all the way to Nonsan?”, means she cannot accompany him because she has morning classes, so that night is their last night together, implying she wants to spend an hot night with him(!) At that moment, a nearby building appears with a sign reading “Go Go Tonight,” presumably a motel. Simultaneously, Gwan-sik’s line, “Your daughter is just like you, Oh Ae-sun,” appears. The previous conversation was about Ae-soon and Gwan-sik going to Busan, and Gwan-sik found Young-beom who had the same club promotional pamphlet as Geum-myeong at the entrance ceremony. It seems like Gwan-sik's anxiety with a daughter lol The reason for not selling the cabbage field, as Gwansik said, is indeed that it represents having endured that summer, but I felt it was precious because it was left behind by Ae-sun’s mother, Gwangrye. From elementary school, I grew cabbages on that land, sold them, and used the money to take care of my younger siblings. And as the cabbages grew, just as Gwangrye said, time passed and hardships were overcome. After Gwangrye passed away, when Ae-sun and Gwansik farmed the cabbage field, the line comes: "Just wait and see. As the flower dye fades from your fingernails, the living will forget and carry on. Just as fingernails grow, new days rush in. How could you not forget?" Because of living that way, I felt the land held deep meaning. ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ If you’re thinking of doing a reaction to the next K-drama, please make sure it’s “Our Unwritten Seoul.” It’s truly, truly, truly a masterpiece. It’s my all-time favorite drama. 🥺🥺
