Aesun gets a reality check, her worst nightmare comes true…😭 Meanwhile Gwan Sik makes painful sacrifices for his family. 💔⛵️

But, the last episode was so heart warming though! 🫶🥹 We saw Gum Myeong and Picasso reunite and their love story blossomed into marriage. It was literally so wholesome that Gwan Sik, Aesun, and little bro were crying, including ourselves! 🥹👰🏻‍♀️

sorry in advance for the long comment! i really felt for eunmyeong, as the least favourite child in my family. i'm the oldest daughter in my family, but my younger brother was the favourite (so somewhat reversed). it was really obvious to both me and my brother growing up, but my parents really did feel like they were doing their best with us, and i absolutely didn't doubt that. my parents are good and reasonable people, just like gwansik and aesun. but whenever i got 95% on an exam, the response was "okay, but why isn't it 100%?". my brother would achieve the same, and the response would be "of course, you have always been smart and capable". if i expressed my ambitions, they would say "that's great, but why don't you aim for something more manageable?" and if my brother did, they would say "go for it! you can achieve anything you want to, because you are so smart". and if i made a mistake, i would be met with "why do you have to come off so embarrassing and uneducated?" but if my brother made a mistake, it would be "that's okay, mistakes happen - let's figure out how to solve it together". this kind of thing definitely left a mark on my self esteem and my life. i have a different personality from eunmyeong, so i would handle it by trying to improve myself quietly. if i had to cry, i would cry without making a sound to not look weak in front of them. i was a very obedient child, but nothing i did was ever enough. i continued to hold onto the ambitions i had, just in case that if i achieve those things, my parents would finally acknowledge that i am just as capable as my brother. that kind of thing makes you lose your mind. what really helped was that my brother, despite being the favourite child, has a really good and mature heart. despite being younger than me, since his teens, he recognized that he was the favourite and would try to show me support whenever my parents would treat me unfairly. i built a great relationship with him which eliminated some resentment i had when i was younger. i ended up becoming a doctor, and my parents finally acknowledge me as someone who was capable. as an adult, i finally had that conversation with my parents about how i felt growing up and how i felt like i was treated differently just like eunmyeong. when they look back at it, they do acknowledge it but assured that it wasn't on purpose. and i believe them - i love my parents and they definitely did their best with what they had/knew, but it doesn't take away my self esteem and anxiety issues growing up. i think eunmyeong feels the same, so that's just my perspective on eunmyeong and understanding how he feels. thankfully, i have a great relationship with my parents now, but just like eunmyeong, there was a big conversation to be had before the relationship starts healing.

honey i feel you .. *sends virtual hugs tightly* .. i also feel my younger sister is the favorite one, even until now.. she is already married and lives with her husband in another town while im still living with mom, but most decisions i made around the house would be discussed with my sister behind my back. mom would call her and "consult" things and then comes back to me to either validate or counter my suggestions. my sister then calls me to let me know whats about to happen without mom knowing. so these days i just discuss things with my sister before talking to mom and just mention her name "well she said this and that" and mom would immediately agree with whatever i say. it hurts still, knowing my parents still dont trust my judgements 100%. but its comforting knowing at least my sister got my back, just like your brother. i kinda wished to see more of geum-myeong and eun-myeong relationship and how they support one another. having a secure relationship with my sister is what got me through. just like eun-myeong, i am a stubborn child (still) and stood my ground very firmly and would not be afraid to talk back to my parents. people would say/think/see me as the "ungrateful troubled child" because i dont just do things as ordered/told when i dont want to and would question/confront any unfairness/illogical things. like when i got up late, they would say "girl should not get up this late, no man would take a lazy wife". and i'd be like "why? just because im a girl i cant sleep in and will have to get up early my whole life? thats so unfair! if the man loves me enough, he would let me sleep," and they would scold me for being rude by talking back to them and not being obedient. then my sister would come to me quietly and asked "why cant you just politely nod and say yes/sorry?" well i cant. why cant my perspective be heard and understood just because i am the child? just like eun-myeong i am so frustrated trying to make my parents understand my pov, of why i do things and think the way i do. ps. im so sorry for the long reply... wasnt planning on pouring my heart out in this comment thread.. this show feels like therapy lol

qotd: i interned at the library at my uni, but it was unpaid internship so i dont know if that counts.. my first paying job was as copy editor at a language self-study book publishing.. you know, the craziest thing for me is that aesun experienced childhood going to school with her books wrapped in a cloth tied on her back and embracing modern technologies such as a flip mobile phones in her senior years..

Park Cheol-yong appears only through mentions in the story. His mother is a hairdresser (the shop is called Cheol-yong Hair Salon), and his father seems to work hard at a wholesale market. (Gwansik once scolded him, saying, “Your father works so hard at the market that his fingernails are falling off, and you run away from home?” — though the person he said this to turned out to be Eun-myeong’s girlfriend, Bu Hyeon-suk, not Cheol-yong.) Cheol-yong grew up together with Yang Eun-myeong, but unlike him, he was always at the bottom of the class, a troublemaker, and even had a habit of stealing. Because of that, Aesoon and Gwansik constantly warned Eun-myeong to stay away from him. Later, Cheol-yong and Eun-myeong opened a pawnshop together, but Cheol-yong ran away after stealing a 70 million won Buncheong ware pottery and even framed Eun-myeong for the crime, causing him to be detained in jail. Cheol-yong’s mother runs Cheol-yong Hair Salon, and when Aesoon, Yang-im, and Gyeong-ja came to confront her about Eun-myeong being jailed in her son’s place, she shamelessly insisted that her son was originally a good boy who just fell in with the wrong crowd — showing no remorse. As a side note, Eun-myeong’s hairstyle changes quite often throughout the story. From a line where the aunts mock Won-bok (Cheol-yong’s mother), saying, “Who do you think fried and curled that head of his?” after she criticized Eun-myeong’s looks, it seems likely that she was the one responsible for styling his hair. The original Korean line of “I only get leftovers?” is “You raised me just to eat the leftovers in this house?” Her sister got fresh food because she had exams, and her father because he was tired from work, but Eun-myeong was given only the food that was left over. To the child, that must have felt like, “I’m the least important person in this house.” So even though it sounds like a childish complaint on the surface, it’s actually an expression of her desire to be loved and acknowledged. In the conversation in front of the TV, seeing Ae-soon laughing at the mention of the Benz, Eun-myeong joins in with a look that says, “Oh? Mom’s laughing haha,” and it somehow feels really touching. But right after that, Ae-soon makes a comment comparing Eun-myeong and Geum-myeong, so Eun-myeong probably feels a sense of doubt about the brief moment of happiness she just had. When Eun-myeong comes out of the police station, Ae-soon is holding tofu in her hands. To explain again, referring back to Episode 2 when Ae-soon and Gwansik went to the police station after fighting with the inn couple: in Korea, people eat tofu on the day they are released from prison. The white color of tofu symbolizes purity and a fresh start. It serves as a metaphor for washing away one’s sins and beginning life anew. While it is not a mandatory tradition, it has been part of Korean cultural practice for a long time. In episode 13, Eun-myeong tells Gwan-sik, “You have to open the faucet fully to fill the bucket up. You get nowhere in life trying to mend every leaking hole.” But in this episode, in front of the police station, Geum-myeong narrates, “A bucket that's always filled to the brim, no matter how many leaking holes it has. That's something Eun-myeong already had.” In the ending credits, there are credits for Jeju dialect consultation, legal consultation, funeral consultation, medical consultation, and squid preparation consultation. For the squid preparation consultation, it says “Jeju Haenyeo Three Sisters.” The drama’s haenyeo aunts’ restaurant is called “AUNTIES' SEAFOOD HOUSE,” but the Korean sign reads “Three Aunts’ Raw Fish Restaurant,” which is somewhat similar to the name of the restaurant that provided consultation. From what I found, Jeju Haenyeo Three Sisters is the name of a restaurant. They started diving in Biyangdo Island with the grandmother, and currently the mother and aunts continue the haenyeo work, running a restaurant that has been managed by three generations. The scene where Ae-soon prepares squid at the market was consulted by this restaurant. Later, the woman sitting across from Ae-soon as she prepares squid at the fish market is the same woman who almost had an affair with Bu Sang-gil. She was caught by Ae-soon and the other three haenyeo before crossing the line, so she ran away just in time. In her younger days, she was once caught dancing at a dance hall, and before the Seoul Olympics, while running a real estate office, she even acted as an enforcer for the authorities, trying to evict market vendors under the pretext of clearing the route for the Olympic torch relay. However, amid all this, she also helped Ae-soon by informing her about Eun-myeong’s placement on a deep-sea fishing vessel. From the way she often appears in Ae-soon’s stories saying things like, “That Misook Damn bitch girl… did such-and-such,” it seems she has settled into the role of a neighbor with whom she bickers but also shares a fond familiarity. For reference, the same actress plays her from youth to middle age, and her real age is somewhere between IU, who plays young Ae-soon, and Moon So-ri, who plays middle-aged Ae-soon, making it hard to estimate her character’s age. However, since she addresses Ae-soon as “you” and speaks informally to her while working at the market, it’s assumed that she is roughly the same age as Ae-soon. When Ae-soon scolds Eun-myeong, his wife Hyun-sook sulks, saying she’s upset and refuses to eat, storming off to her room. There, she tries to take out the beer she had secretly hidden on the balcony, only to find new cans that Gwansik had bought for her. She’s truly living like a daughter to her father-in-law. Later, as she opens up to Gwansik over drinks, she asks, “Do you know what Je-il’s father (Eun-myeong) is doing these days?” and confides that after being scammed and falling into poverty, Eun-myeong has secretly been selling rice cakes. Since her marriage to Eun-myeong, Hyun-sook’s hairpins change in every scene, just like Ae-soon’s—a deliberate detail meant to emphasize that Eun-myeong has inherited Gwansik’s romantic nature. Actor Park Hae-jun, who plays Gwansik, and actor Choi Dae-hoon, who plays Sang-gil, said that Lee Soo-kyung, who plays Hyun-sook, “radiates a powerful energy simply through her presence.” In the letter Eun-myeong leaves before departing on the deep-sea fishing vessel, he writes: “I’m going away to clear my head for a bit. Your good-for-nothing son. P.S. Hyun-sook, I’m sorry. Please take care of Je-il.” In front of the deep-sea fishing vessel, Ae-soon says to Eun-myeong, “Why didn’t you tell me? Aren’t you talking to me anymore? Are you still mad at me?” These lines are the same ones Ae-soon said to Eun-myeong in episode 6, when he blamed himself for Dong-myeong’s death and believed that Ae-soon was angry with him. Actor Choi Dae-hoon, who played Bu Sang-gil, actually has a daughter in real life, so he played with the child actors really well. When Geum-myeong and Chung-seop are talking while watching TV, a noodle shop commercial comes on. It’s the same noodle company that Chung-seop’s ex-girlfriend (the daughter of Geum-myeong’s boarding house owner) was supposed to marry into. So Geum-myeong says, “I wonder if Song Bu-seon is handling the noodles well,” and then Chung-seop replies, “Why should my past become the subject of your jokes?” haha. The exam that Hyun-sook’s mother is talking about on the phone in the car, saying she passed, is the real estate agent licensing exam. It’s written as “real estate agent” on the workbook in her bag.
