Corvo, like countless others throughout the long hallway, opened up the temporary locker assigned to him yesterday. Belt pulled out, he checked out the few pouches connected to it, double checking his ammunition and dust crystal collection. Satisfied he fastened it around his waist, the only pouch he hadn’t checked subtly rattling as he reaching into the locker again. Axe brought out and secured to his hip, he closed the locker.

His heart thumped against his chest, feeling as though it stopped for a moment. A woman with long black hair topped off by a bow was going through the one directly beside his, so silent he hadn’t heard when she showed up or got the thing open at all.

He was being too jumpy for no reason. Even if Yang showed up its not like she’d asked about what they did. And even she did there would be nothing to tell. Because-

“Corvo-“

“We didn’t do anything.” Corvo blurted out, twisting around.

Grin spread across her face, Ruby’s excitement was joined by embarrassment, her face reddening as she looked up at him. “Really, bro?” She muttered, shoulders dropping, disappointment clear as day.

Here he was hoping she’d be able to handle the pressure and he was already cracking.

“Sorry.” He said, glancing to their side. The bow wearing girl wasn’t paying them any attention, still grabbing stuff from her locker. “You ready for today?”

“Yeah!” Ruby cheered, a hand raised. “Finally, we can forget all the awkward small talk and show off what we do best.”

“Exactly.” Corvo agreed with her, the both of them swinging their hands forward for a quick high five between them rather than a high up one, his initial excitement for all this finally returning. They were about to be freaking Beacon students for real after today.

“You two.”

“We didn’t do anything.” Ruby blurted out as she twisted around.

Arms crossed and a thin brow raised, that Weiss girl who been talking to Pyrrha the other day had showed up. As Ruby backed away from her and to his side, she shot him an apologetic smile which he returned with the same disappointed look she gave him.

If they didn’t lock in, it was going to be game over real fast for the both of them.

“I’m not concerned with whatever trouble you’re involved in.” Weiss said, giving the both of them a look that, despite her being only just a little taller than Ruby, made Corvo feel as though she was looking down at him. “I just wanted to make things clear. I don’t know how you kids cozied up to Pyrrha, especially you-“ Her icy blue eyes, previously looking between the both of them, focused on him. “-but I won’t have anyone messing things up for me. If you can’t keep up during initiation then at least stay out of our way, understand?”

“Wha- Kids?” Ruby repeated. “We’re eighteen not-“

“Ugh, its even worse than I thought. You don’t just act like kids, you are kids.” Weiss cut Ruby off, a flash off annoyance filling Corvo.

Before he could act on it, the locker beside them closed. “I doubt the one going out of the way to start trouble is any more than a child herself.” The raven haired girl said, glancing their way.

Weiss huffed. “I don’t care for the implication that I’m anything like these brats.”

“Yeah.” Her sharp yellow eyes jumped from him and Ruby, settling on Weiss as she fully turned around. “I wasn’t really implying.”

“What?” Fully glaring over at the girl, Weiss scoffed. “Do you even have any idea who it is you’re talking to?”

“Weiss Schnee, the heiress to the Schnee family, Remnant’s biggest supplier of dust.” So that’s why her name was so familiar. Weiss’s chest puffed up, a smirk beginning to form. “Who are also known for shady business practices and controversial labor policies towards faunus.”

That swell of pride drained away instantly, a hint of angry red taking of Weiss’s pale cheeks. He and Ruby snickered quietly, earning them another glare from Weiss as she spluttered for some kind of response. The bow wearing girl didn’t care to wait for one though, the click of her heels joining all the other noises of the filled hallway of lockers.

“She was cool.” Corvo whispered to Ruby, watching the mysterious girl’s hips as she took off, those shorts and stockings hugging her rear. She definitely had one that he could admire for far longer than he got the chance to, the crowds of their fellow possible first years blocking her from view.

“Yeah. Kind of wish she was our fourth teammate instead.” Ruby whispered back. “You think Pyrrha will let us switch out this crabby girl?”

“She’s too nice for that.”

Huffing to herself, Weiss gave them one last glare but whatever she was going to say died away as Pyrrha came walking from further down the hall, fully armored up with her weapons at her back.

“Good morning, everyone.” Pyrrha said as she stepped in beside him, her usual kind smile in place. It dropped a smidge, temple furrowing slightly as she looked between all of them. “Is everything alright?”

“Of course.” Weiss said, clearing her throat.

“Yep.”  Corvo said, following her lead.

Bad attitude and unnecessary comments aside, its not like they wanted to ruin someone else’s time here either. Maybe she’d lightened up when the pressure of the initiation wasn’t hanging over all of them.

XOXO

“WOOOOO!” Corvo cheered.

Winds rushing past his hair. The endless forest below he was shooting over. The countless Grimm that hide within it.

Aura shield coming to life, Corvo grinned as he pulled his axe from his waist. He had fun exploring the campus with Pyrrha and Ruby, but this was what he was really looking forward. No more talking. No more listening to speeches, No awkward or unfriendly encounters.

Just him, the forest, and a whole lot of Grimm to fight.

As his angled climb through the air came to an end, the momentum from that platform he’d been launched from dying out, his plummet to the forest below sped up. Reaching into the rattling pouch at the side of his waist, he pulled out a length of chain, fixing it to the single chain-link at the bottom of his axe. Dropping his axe aside, he grabbed the length of chain with both hands, spinning it.

Slow at first, his weapon was a blur by the time he got close enough to take aim at a tree. Sending it forward, Waxing Rose’s blade dug into the bark of a thick tree and he pulled the chain tight. Rather than letting it wrap around the tree, he kept the chain pulled just tight enough to swing below the dense gathering of overhead branches but above the ground, sending himself flying back up and landing on a thick branch.

Axe yanked out by the chain, he pulled his weapon back to himself and dropped him onto the forest floor, chains returned to his pouch and weapon transformed into its shotgun.

Now he just had to go find some Grimm in the area to warm up with.

Teams, as they just found out, would be formed through eye contact and as the first one to be sent flying from their planned group, he just have to hope that they saw where he landed.

Ruby hit the ground, stumbling into a sprint.

She’d tracked Corvo’s fall, sniper fire and her semblance used to get her as close as possible. She was pretty sure the others were doing the same. All she had to do was get to him first and make sure they made eye contact.

Get to Corvo. Eye contact.

Get to Corvo. Eye contact.

Get to Corvo. Eye contact.

The shaking of the branches above broke her mental chant, Ruby glancing up and slowing her sprint just enough that she could easily pull out Crescent Rose if it was a Grimm. Leaves from the branches ahead were shaken free, falling. A black spinning symbol appeared on the ground and Ruby skidded to a complete stop.

It kind of looked like a snowflake?

A white blur shot down at an angle from above and came to a sudden stop on the weird symbol.

Icy blue eyes met hers.

Barrel pressed to tough black fur, with the pull of Waning Rose’s trigger, Corvo blew open the chest of a beowolf. Ducking beneath the swipe of another, he rushed into its larger body as he pulled back the slide of his shotgun, barrel pressed into the bottom of its maw. Pulling the trigger, blackish red viscera filled the air, wispy black trails leaving all the scattered parts as they and the corpses began to dissipate.

As he moved from beowolf to beowolf while avoiding their lunges and swipes, limbs and bodies blown apart, he couldn’t help but grin. Beowolves were never good for one on one fights, but they came in such numbers that going against them was always a fun test of reflexes and speed.

The last one blown apart, Corvo held his shotgun aside, loading fresh shells as all the corpses, blood, and remains of the Grimm slowly dissipated into the unnatural darkness that all the creatures seemed to be reduced to after death.

Sometimes he couldn’t help but wonder if that vanishing darkness was going somewhere or really just disappearing.

The bushes behind him rustled.

Corvo twisted around, the slide of his shotgun pulled back as he took aim. The greenery was crushed underfoot, the lumbering bear like form of large, armored Ursa stepped out beyond the thick greenery.

This was going to be good. Ursa might be slow, but they could take more than a few shots before-

It lurched forward and, with a weakened version of its kind's usual roars, collapsed, the ground shaking. Pulling the black blade of her short weapon from its body, a familiar girl with long black hair stood on its back, her yellow eyes gazing down into his.

“Hey, you’re the girl from before.” Corvo said, shotgun lowered. “How’d you kill that thing so quickly? And without making any noise too?”

“You were making plenty of noise. It wasn’t hard to get past its armor when it wasn’t focused on me.” She said.

That made sense but she must’ve been pretty skilled too. The dark blade of her weapon was pretty short, so short that he wasn’t sure if he should be calling it sword while being too big to be called a simple knife or dagger. Managing to kill an Ursa with a single stab from that thing all before it could react to her presence wasn’t something he could do. At least not that quietly.

She was looking pretty interest but…

“Aw crap baskets. This means we’re teammates now, doesn’t it?” Corvo realized. As she jumped off the fading corpse, an eyebrow slowly rose up. “Oh, I didn’t mean anything bad about you by that. I think you’re really cool actually but I kind of had others plans.”

“Don’t worry, I understand.” She said, giving him a slight nod. “But we are partners now.”

“Right.” Fully setting aside his shotgun into one hand, he held out a hand for her, smiling. “I’m Corvo.”

That blade slipped into the dark sheath she was holding in her other hand, she affixed the weapon to the back of her waist and took the offered hand with her smaller one. “Blake.”

“Blake, cool.” He repeated, nodding as they pulled their hands back. “I know we’re supposed to be heading after some kind of artifact, but do you mind if we try and look for my sister first?  I’m pretty sure she’ll be close by.”

Blake nodded, the both of them setting off without any issue.

At least I didn’t run into Weiss. Corvo thought. I feel sorry for whoever ends up partnered with her.

(A/N: Teams might be a little unexpected but it all serves a purpose. Probably.

Anyways, to those actively reading this, like I said in my initial posting of it, its secondary to my main story, not to mention being smut. I doubt most people want their emails or notifications filled with that so this story doesn't typically send out any. Typically it just updates whenever my main story is updated so just check in whenever you see that happen.

Cool? Cool. See you all in the next one!)
