My age is showing when I think why not just say a/s/l?

Colorblindraws

Hey Daveed, at what age did you decide you realize the whole "Nobody is gonna give me the opportunity, I have to build a portfolio of the work I wanna get paid to do, and thats how i get work" thing? Because you were the one that made me realize that sometime ago, and I was wondering how did u stumble upon it

Quintin

How did you go about starting to learn art and build a following/clients and start making money with your art?

Pedro

I haven’t watched all of the Q&A’s so if there’s questions on here that you’ve already answered just skip over them but ive got a few. 1. What are your Top 5 most influential artists on your work or you personally? 2. Your Favorite art books? 3. Have you ever worked in the animation industry? 4. Why has your style changed a bit within the past couple years? Is it simpler to to create the pieces that you currently do with this new workflow? 5. I’m not sure if you’ve ever spoken about your struggles as an artist. Are there any in stories particular you could share with us? Thank you Dave! :)

Colorblindraws

Whats your experience with performance enhacing drugs? Like were u shoving redbulls down your throat back in the day to meet deadlines or were you always a clean boy?

Alex

New Patron, so not sure if you covered it before. Also sent you a message about the same question. Will any of you previous work (Turtles and more) even be available for us here on Patreon or in a shop to purchase? Cheers!

Hey Dave, in regards to digital illustration, I was wondering why do you think you gravitate towards it more than other mediums? I really like artists like Yoshiyuki Takani and Juan Giménez a lot lately with how they approach things like texture and line art respectively. How would you approach translating a more traditional feel into programs like Clip or PS?

Hi Pedro. Just trying to help out here. I've asked a similar question to your number 1 on 23:25 minutes into the April Q&A. Just to compile Dave's answer to the question i asked before: They were: noriyoshi ohrai pepe larraz Takehiko Inoue JC leyendecker james jean arthur rackham Juan Giménez In no particular order. he did mention he draws inspiration and is inspired by a lot of artists, but these guys come at the top of his mind at the moment. Just posting this here in case he has any one to add to the ones previously mentioned.

Hi Dave, hope all's well man. So I have an industrial design background and we mostly render in monochromatic schemes for efficiency so my understanding of color is wack. Also I'm making a bold jump to attempt to be a visual development artist/character designer. Recently I've stumbled upon your art cafe podcast and was heavily inspired. I now have this strong desire take the long road to sufficient painting skills specifically watercolor. My question is did you use learning traditional watercolor as a way to work through color theory and basically gain an overall command of color? I'm looking to do my heavy figure drawing and anatomy studies digitally but to get away from the computer do color studies to learn how they actually feel and translate that back to digital. Sorry for long post. Always Inspired. Thanks for all this gold.

Hi Dave, thank you as always for answering my questions last month. Question: What do your mornings usually look like? (Pre and post pandemic)

Nick Waldinger

Hey Dave, if you had to start from scratch in 2020, how would you go about building a following/audience for people to follow your work? Also what's the weirdest porn you've ever watched. Thanks!

Grimorae

What's your canvas size/dpi when you're working on clip studio? I'm curious.

Zuzanna Horaczuk

How to balance sketching and "painting studies". One helps you focus on anatomy, composition, proportions, perspective etc. and the second one at color, values, lighting and all the things sketching requires, but it is usually slower and takes longer. When do I know which one would help me improve efficiently? Sometimes I feel like it's a waste of time painting 2 hour study, and then seeing my proportions and anatomy are way off, but I don't want to lose my skill at color and shading.

Faisal

did your son defeat you in combat yet?

timdegroote

Hey Dave, hope you and your family are well and thank you for doing these! I’m not sure whether you already covered this in another Q&A but how does one train themselves to become more disciplined? Also how do you go about planning your day, do you know beforehand exactly what you’ll be doing or does everything happen quite spontaneously? Also a bit of a random question, I had a stupid accident with my hair trimmer the other day which meant that I had to shave off most of my hair. Reluctant to expose my shiny head to the elements, can you recommend a good quality cap that doesn’t turn oneself into a walking billboard? Cheers and have a great one!

When I was a kid, I was big boned. My brother said I was fat. He use to call me names such as 'tits', 'jugs', and 'tree trunks'. What were some of your favorite put-downs growing up? Thanks, stay well.

Bourgeon Milan

Hello Dave, I had a question about the evolution of your art. Your rendering a few years ago was very detailed (the orc, Geralt, Garen) grainy with some microtexture, and its now being more smooth. Is there a particular reason for that change ? like , does it feel more realistic that way to you? Or is it just a taste thing? What started that change? Thank you and take care !

David Alvarez

Hey Dave, I have 2 questions for you : - I am a concept artist like you, I would like to know from when did you know that you could live without clients? - Are you not worried to go around in circles and not to try other things without client's constraints? For sure you'll become better and better in what you know do but not to be jostled in your habits and to try new things that you could not have done yourself ? Thank you and continue to share your awesome work.

Sleepy

Hey Mr.Delicious, two questions. I’m late to the game and only just started reading Steve webcomic and I love it. You and Dan did a really great job. Can a person outside of the US (Europe) buy the book? For my second question. What in your opinion makes a cool idea? Let's take Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo for example. They both were very skilled artists. They both painted half-naked muscly people covered in fantasy. So why Franks art feels way cooler than Boris. Is there a way for young artists to practice to be more like Frank, or this is something you have to ‘be born‘ with. Sorry for wall of text. Best!

Arcturus

You said before that you would like to do watercolors. Could I ask why? Any reason other than having a physical painting?

Stas Aldinov

Hello Dave, have you ever considered becoming a Night Vigilante if nothing else worked out ? Also I'm interested to hear more about your plans for the future of your career and this patreon , where do you think you want to go and do and where do you think the path will take you? P.S. Stay safe , stay delicious !

Dean Brorson

Yo Dave, thanks for answering my questions from last month! If you had to create your own art course for drawing and rendering characters, how would you structure the course? Thanks man, keep well!

Louis Whitworth

Hey Mr. Rapoza, do you think you'll ever start streaming the Acceptable Podcast regularly again? Love hearing you and Mr. Warren chat when I'm working. On the subject of the podcast, did you ever notice how frequently people would ask you guys how often they should masturbate?

Colorblindraws

How old u think ur son will be when he finds out about your "manga"?

Colorblindraws

What would u say currently are your best skills regarding art, and also what are some of your weakest points? Just so we can be certain that you are still a mortal

Ian Storey

Hey Dave, I have a question about anatomy. Do you ever get to the end of a painting and decide to fudge the anatomy a little for the benefit of a more interesting pose or composition?

Rauv_Art

Hi Dave, I have a question regarding getting work sustainably. I know that you said you were constantly making a new portfolio when you were getting started, but how did you use those portfolios to get more jobs? For example, let’s say I just got a job doing characters for a Final Fantasy Tactics style game. How could I use or tweak that portfolio to get work doing characters on a fighting game or an Overwatch style game. If that isn’t possible and you need to make different portfolios for each avenue, how did you find the time to make all those portfolios, plus do client work, personal work, and studies? This is coming from an outsider’s perspective, but it just seems really odd to me that people get the jobs that they get. For example, I know that Loish worked on that Horizon Zero Dawn game, even though the style and subject matter she’s famous for don’t match the project. I’m not saying that I don’t think she deserved the job, I’m just wondering as to HOW she got the job. Thanks as always, stay safe in these crazy days.

What does your Wallpaper show?

Leighton Chance

Hey Dave what sort of impact does your workspace have, if any, on getting into the creative zone and being productive? Do you have like a nice cozy office that you enjoy working in all day or is it a dark smelly cave with empty tubs of creme everywhere?

Echjar

I look forward to the content that you'll put out once you're done with all your current jobs, I'd like to see in the future more of the videos of you just sketching and talking about them like the tiger inking video. I learned more from that and the Guyver videos and could actually apply some of the things that you mentioned in them since I've only just started art. :)

Tobi

What are some must read comics?

Deendrew

How long does your average ‘heavy’ artwork take? And what’s some advice you got an getting your art out there to either get people to follow you or get some job opportunities?

Joshua Barbour

What’s up, sex machine? Anyway, I’m terrified of sending my work to anyone, partly because I think it’s not good enough and also because I’m scared they’ll actually say yes and want to hire me. Do you have any advice for the business side of things? Any books on the matter you might recommend? Trying to avoid suicide, thanks.

Nicholas P

Hey Dave, I want to ask for your thoughts and general advice on how best to build more steam professionally? Studied last 7 years. Got gud, enough. Got TTRPG work, not WotC. Crushed the jobs, aced it, with some hard lessons learned with A.D. communication. Thought I unlocked the door to my dreams, somehow feel further than ever away from them. I want to self-publish fantasy goodness, and I have been operating under the notion that getting WotC work and specifically MTG would grant me the audience/ reputation to give credence to my personal work. Thanks so much for doing these Q&A’s and this patreon. Your work, journey, and gumroads have been super inspiring and insightful. Just a little bummed I didn’t shake your hand at Massive Black ‘13.

Rave Dapoza

What’s up Dave! I had an idea for your Patreon exclusive members. My idea came from your recent posts of ‘art for fun’ like the Berserk, Guyver and Evangelion posts. So, it would go something like this: You make a monthly post saying: July Fan Art – Insert your suggestions here! – or – July Fan Art – Pick from the 4 options below (like a Poll) Then out of the entries in the post you pick your favorite or based on the Poll you draw that one, as an example. I think it would be something fun/different to include your cool ass Patreon members. Of course, this is just a suggestion you can take and spin it your way of course! What do you think?

Dean Brorson

Hey Dave, I hope you and the family are well. When looking at art from other artists what are the things that appeal to you? What separates mediocre art from great art? Thanks Man!

Jp Barkus

Hey Dave, I have seen some Patreons offer higher tiers with limited spots for more time consuming tasks (paint overs, art critiques, etc). How much would the cost have to be for you to consider doing something like this?

More Starveil when?

Ahmed Alqirsh

QUESTION is it ever too late to be artist later in life? I mean very skilled artist like you or kim jung gi.

Ahmed Alqirsh

QUESTION what’s a good way to study your favorite artist? For me it’s Otomo and Shinkawa

M Termer

Any forum you would recommend for beginner artists with lovely community? CD looks empty, DeviantArt doesnt look any helpful.

M Termer

+ Have you tried Infinite Painter on iPad?

Dean Brorson

What's up Dave! What are some good warm up exercises you recommend before jumping into an illustration?

Bora_M

Hey Dave, You've mentioned you are gonna start working on the comic and in your Guyver video you mentioned you will use a similar approach, maybe I'm mistaken? Care to elaborate a bit? Really curious to see you do a page, from a drawing to a finish. Looking forward to the Evangelion painting(s)!

Tony Chris

Dave what kind of things distract you most while trying to work(other than baby boy)? Also how did you go about the StarVeil animations, did you go over animation fundamentals first or just jump right into it? What was the most difficult part of the animation process and what about the experience did you find most helpful toward the rest of your work? Thanks for all the sick Patreon content! YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, LOVE YA!

Phillip Victor Chamberlin

Hey so how do you get over creative exhaustion I either have no motivation to finish a drawing/digital painting or just am unsatisfied with what's coming out. I stepped away cause I was doing it so much that it started to suck, but now my hands feel clumsy. And instead of taking a hiatus what do you do when you feel like it doing it sucks?

Rave Dapoza

Hey Dave, forgot to ask. Do you use a keyboard shortcut when using your brushes? Every-time i select eraser or a different tool then click 'B' again for brush it automatically goes back to the top of the brush list, then have to manually go down and find your brush and select it again. thanks! p.s. thanks for the tip on pressing the 'C' shortcut key to switch to eraser and back.

Andrew Boucher

is there a discord that im missing? and if there is not what online communities would you recommend?

Question to the "Dave Rapoza Customer Service" - I've bought one of your shirts with Guyver drawing, remember those? Not sure how many years ago. What I didn't consider back then is that american sizes are so different compared to european. My shirt is far too big to me. All this years I tried to became bigger, but it doesn't help, it's still too large. Can I get a new one, smaller? And this is not the only case - few years before the shirt I've bought one of your MtG artist proofs for $5, and I still haven't received it! Where is my proof?! Seriously speaking - thanks a lot for this Patreon. You had a huge influence on me through all these years, showing how to draw, how to study, how to live doing freelance job. Whitout your livestream sessions I wouldn't start doing freelance by myself. I'm happy if I can bring something back and help you to draw whatever you want now. Thanks and all the best!

Colorblindraws

Yo dave, how thoughtful are you with ur markmaking? At some point I always end up falling a kind of auto painting mode, always tryna follow the form, but maybe "overbrushstroking" a little. Ur brushwork pretty much seems like just enough to make it look right, and I was wondering how do u keep urself from "over painting"

Andrew Gibbons

Dave, you rather have an Eva or a Guyver unit? and design wise which Eva you like? Unit 2 for me :)

Minhaj Khan

Here's a silly question. Have you ever made a big mistake in your career? Is there something that you avoid doing?

What is gonna be the next Steve Cover? I really hope it's green Flay cover

Dave, I have a couple of questions: How did you make the filigree so symmetrical? What is Kim's pho recipe?
