Hey!

Please feel free to leave whatever questions you'd like me to answer in this month's Q&A video! You can ask me anything, doesn't have to be art, you can ask why I sweat beneath my fingernails, how do I grapple with looming dread, or what is my favorite type of fluid to submerge my body into - anything goes.

Looking forward to talking with you all again and being a human!

Thanks!

Dave

Hey fat boy, can you do 15 pushups on camera for us. Thanks and stay well

Drew Bartlett

what was the last thing you stole?

Christian Venson

I'm curious on how to choose projects. How do you narrow down the ideas to a manageable number?

Danny Ryba

What is the best way you have found to practice anatomy?

Gnomegod

Hey Dave, hope you are well! Have you played Hades yet? I can't stop playing. Also, do you have any suggestions for someone who likes working messy rendering just as much with super neat linework? The end result is more or less the same, just trying to conserve time. Just wondering if you have any insight.

Marisa Rani

Hey Dave! (... hopefully this hasn't been asked, apologies if it has) I was wondering, have you ever looked at an artist's work that may have the fundamentals mostly down... but their work doesn't have that "spark" yet? If so, what would you put that down to? What would you say the artist is missing? Also, do you find yourself more drawn to artist's with consistency in their work. Feel free to get as Deep™ or to the point as you'd like Keep being you! Been inspired by ya since conceptartorg days and started studying on the later end of Crimson Daggers 🤘👽🇦🇺

NeoDragonKnight

Hi Dave! What was your favorite gaming system growing up. Do you still own it?

João Pedro

I'm scared of not achieving or not be good enough for the market, I get work, but I always feel like someday this will end and I will be in a really bad position carreer wise... I feel this more since my father died a couple of weeks ago. Is always this feeling, this fear, of the day that I won«t make ends meet. to the point that it already messing with my head and artwork. I'm not sure if you have been in a position like this. maybe I should get therapy or something... xD but I would love to know if you have gone through something like this.

Mrbrisco

Would you ever consider doing a wallpaper art for Devil May Cry 5?

Zak Maxwell

Hey Dave, I remember listening to you mention In an interview that at a certain point you wanted to work on improving as a draftsman and did so by focusing on drawing comics. Do you think that helped you improve overall as an illustrator and do you wish you would have done it sooner?

Levail Naik

Yo Dave, how you doing? I have a two-part question... Could you please tell me how to build up an audience? And also, how does an artist get commissioned for client work, is there a specific process to go about? I'm kinda clueless on this.

Sondog Studios

Thanks for the time you put into your craft and especially for sharing the journey. So much insight. This patreon is a shining example of the platforms potential. 2 part question regarding remakes: How do you feel about remixes of your art. What ps1/ps2 era game do you want to see a full remake announced for in 2021?

Sen Ectus

How's the Fam mate?

Faolan Grady

I asked this before and am unsure of you answered it and I missed it, but I'm wondering if there are any art mediums you'd like to try or have tried, like sculpture or Plein air?

Crow

Hey Dave, hope all's good in your end. My questions (sorry) for you is, how did you start off painting clothes and the forms of muscles (especially the face). Having to paint in the colors while trying to keep the form is still a lot to do at one time for me. So, I typically grayscale then add colors kinda like how I would traditionally draw but I feel like that practice is too limiting and doesn't get the same level of punch as just slapping some color and going nuts. At least that's what I think Also I want to submit a portfolio to intership at Riot or some other game company that is handing those out, but I don't really have a lot and I don't think I'm at that level yet. Should I still do it? Thanks, and best wishes to You and Your Family :)

Karaiel

Hey Dave! My question is; Do you deal with any pain from your drawing (for example, wrist pains or backache) and if so, how do you cope with it? Sincerely, someone currently typing this with a wrist brace on

Dr.Qaukenstein Art

Hi Dave, I've got a question about some tutorials for Procreate, even short ones. cuz there is nothing of high-quality tutorials for Procreate out there and You created a bunch of great stuff on Procreate. Will they be any on ur Patreon? :)

Arnold Eiermann

do you believe in learning all for internet?¿. Because in this times its the only way.

Bogsloth

Sup Protein Golem, What kinds of things do clients say to you for critiques and feedback? since I'm pretty new to working I tend to overthink a lot of stuff. i always make the adjustments they want but sometimes I think, damn i suck they should not have needed to tell me to change that. Also congrats on the new baby, parenthood seems wild, like you boof in a girl and you get all that, its crazy.

Esteban Sanchez

Yo Dave, you ever fit a living animal in your mouth? Bugs count. Also, I dunno if someone else has asked but; you ever see weird shit in the sky? Some bonafide, unidentified, non-planetside flying objects? Or little green boys? -(.Not goblins.)-

Josh Newton

Hey Dave, as an independent artist who works from home do you still use a smart phone? If so how often are you on it, do you find yourself getting distracted by it and do you keep it on you through out the day or do you put it in a separate room until you're done working. Also congrats on the new baby.

Bruno Diaz

Hey Dave, what is the difference in concept art from Movies vs Games. How different are the portfolios from each other? What skills are needed for each one or is it more or less the same? Thanks.

Robbie Tilton

I love your Patreon and have been learning a lot from it. Thanks for being awesome and showing us how you think about your work/craft. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on social media as an independent artist and how it's evolved as you've gained a larger following. What has been the biggest benefits of having a large following and what is annoying about it? For the annoying things - how do you deal with it?

Chris Pittas

Hey Dave, I have been a fan of your for more than 10 years, and this year I desided it was time to join your patreon and learn as much as I can from you since you have influenced me a lot as an artist and the variety of your work (doing comics, illustrations, concepts etc.) is a dream of mine to achieve. My question is if you have ever felt like what you do is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I find myself thinking regularly about how what I do is useless and meaningless, and that maybe pursuing art as a career was the wrong choice instead of learning a skill with actual real world use, such as becoming a baker or mechanic for example.

Sam Green

Hey Dave, When it comes to doing a poster or poster-like piece, what is your usual starting point for creating and developing your composition? I work mostly on poster art and feel like that initial stage of staring at a blank canvas trying to come up with an interesting concept to hinge the piece on, or composition structure just fills me with dread.

Octavio Sosa

Hey Dave, just a simple question....How are you?

Noel

Hey Dave, what the actual size of canvas you are used to work on ?, i lost some of cool texture on brushes such as "The Dopest Pencil" one on the bigger canvas, thanks Dave.

NoCaptainErick

Hey, Dave! I hope you and your family are well! I started doing digital illustration about 2 years ago, and I want to live as a freelancer. I do not feel that I am progressing so much in the studies I do, in anatomy, perspective, and colors. My question is, do you have any tips, a routine or something? I am two months in your patreon and loving all the content, you are my biggest inspiration in art, and I hope to improve and always see your works. And also, I forgot to tell you that I'm from Brazil, so ... could you come into my house and eat my whole family's ass? I love you man! <3

YoPotato

1. What do you recommend as a good site for portfolio work? I feel that DeviantArt isn't great. 2. Early on in your career, when you ran into a block in your work regarding fundamentals (I struggle with lighting), would you do a few studies and then return to the piece you were working on? I hope these questions make sense. Thanks Dave!

Frank C

Hi Dave, 1: Do you mind if I post a sculpt based on your recent He-Man sketch to social media (including armor and such)? 2: Are you planning on developing those He-Man and Skeletor sketches or leaving them loosey goosey?

Kiptoe

I've been reading Steve Lichman Vol. 1 the past few weeks, I was a backer on the original kickstarter for the first book, but read about half and never read the rest until now. Man, I was crying from laughing the other night, when Dracula goes into the bar to hire the guys to kill Keifer. The drunk dwarf had me balling. The script for that comic is so clever and sort of on-the-nose parody, which makes it so charming. And how the story has developed from one-off jokes in the beginning to a full fledged story arc with all these characters has been so fun to read. Just wanna give you guys props for that first. Do you think part of the success of those books is because they are based on popular characters like Dracula and such? Even though you totally made them your own. I know you said comedy is easier to sell than serious or action. I look forward to when I can read it at night. Also, I want the second book but I have to buy both, and I already have the first book. Is there a way to get the second only? Maybe I can send Dan a message on Twitter. Also, did you know that Dan was two years above me at UMass Dartmouth Illustration? I studied in the same program as him. I think thats how I found out about you so long ago, he was doing Crimson Daggers like right after school and I was seeing what he and you were doing. Anyways, theres a couple questions in there, muchas gracias compadre

Michael Robson

Do you have plans to make more illustration process about other zelda characters? Deku, Zora, Kokiri

Kiptoe

Also its crazy how you have the entire first book and a good chunk of the second book online for free. Are people just really amped to have a physical copy and thats why the campaigns did so well?

Wassim

Hello Dave. I hope you're doing well recently. I have one question. Would you mind giving us an insight on what it's like to work in the industry, especially on the side of deadlines. Is there a specific time limit on how long to deliver thumbnails? then line art? rendering? I find my process to be way slower than yours, and I fear if I ever end up working on a serious project .. I would be working like 12 hours a day or so. And thank you for answering my question last time. <3

Joseph Verdey

Hey Dave, I hope you're doing good. :) I just wanted to ask.. how do you balance out the way you consume media on a daily basis? Like, social media, internet in general, or watching shows/movies, etc. I really admire your consistency in putting out work while at the same time not being completely out of the loop with things so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks!

Kevin C

Hey Dave, in your first Basics video you talked about how when you first started painting you just set a bust down under a light and just painted that over and over. Could you speak to that process? Been drawing with graphite for a while now and want to transition to C O L O R but feel like it's hard to know where to start.

Alfred Manzano

Hey Dave, What does your wife think of your art? does she have a favorite?

Alfred Manzano

Hey Dave, When will we expect the videos about how you create comics? I'm super looking forward to that <3

Alfred Manzano

What's your favorite video game lately?

PaperCuervo

What did you do to study anatomy? How often and how focused were you on it when you first started studying it?

Max Cloke

Hey Cum Guzzler, was listening to Alex Ross talk about getting his start working in advertising and remember hearing you mention something similar. Could you give some insight into what that kind of work would entail?

Frederik H.

Waddup Creamissimo, hope your family is good and all is well. Would you ever consider doing an office tour? Showing what statues/figures/artbooks you keep around to stay inspired? Also does your office really stink as bad of old farts as you always make it out to be? Real excited for the Bloodborne piece, so excited to see you tackling my favorite game of all time. Thanks again for all the juicy OnlyFans content and hope you stay safe!

Elvis Jose

hello Dave!! Im taking art srsly only since 3 months, so i am an absolute beginner and right now im trying to get some resilience and discipline. Basically im practicing to practice as much as possible. So i was wondering how much time did u spent on all the anatomy, gesture, pespective, rythm, composition, etc stuff and how much on "normal just for fun" drawings, when u started to take art as your possible future job? I hope u have/had an amazing day <3

Andrew Glassman Art

Is that really Gaston on Pg. 206 of the D&D monster manual? If so, is it true that.... "Noooo ooooooone..... Hits like Gaston No one Crits like Gaston No one sits on page Two Hundred and Six like Gaston As a Fighter he's great at Intimidating My what a guy that Gaston"

John Crossland

Hey Mr Delicious, No real question, I feel like you've answered pretty much everything that I need to get on the right path, I really love what you're doing with the artwork and I'm hoping you'll do a Streets of Rage poster or some characters from the original, would love to see that. One thing I've personally enjoyed and I've felt really turned a corner in my drawing was your Wolverine Bust you did a video of, It's improved my drawings overnight and I just love Clip Studio now. The brushes are amazing! Especially the water colour brush it's simply beautiful.. I posted my Batman sketch on the discord WIP hope you can check it out sometime, lemme know how much it sucks and kick my ass alittle. Anyway just wanted to thank you, Stay Safe, Johnny

Cleyson Gomes

Hey Dave, thanks for the amazing content, hope youre doing well! I got some questions that would help me a lot if you can explain me better. I've started digital art recently, to be more especific, in the start of the pandemic in my country, around Feb 2020 (but i've been drawing for the past 10~15 years, but only as a hobby), bc of this, i'm still learning and looking for answers all the time. Right now, i'm struggling about the software i should use or when i should use it. I know that the bigger part is up to the artist, who carries the knowledge and creates they own process. I've been using Photoshop since the beginnig but bc of you, i gave myself a change for the CSP, and yes, i loved it, the blend tool, bucket they're really fun to use. But the most important thing is about my lineart. My lines in CSP looks way better, sharpier and cleaner, than Ps. Ps looks really pixelized and that pisses me off, ngl. If possible, i would really like to hear something from you about it. I saw one video before that you talked about it, i think it was the Zelda piece, if i'm correct, but know i'm in that stage that i need some with knowledge to explain me so i can move on and get back to what i'm aiming for the future. Thank you!

Nachta

(( My comment looks like it never posted so I may be double posting if so gomenasorry mate)) Have you every had to deal with a client who asked for changes to a final stage in your work, despite having confirmed details with you previously? If not, how would you? Or in the least, would you advise preventing situations like it in the future? I've had clients ask for changes that even go sideways from my art style and can't help but wonder what they expected in the first place. I really appreciate all of your tips and breakdowns of your process-- they've helped my workflow and exploration immensely! Wishing you and yours good health <3

Oronoro

Hey Dave, I'm back to bug you about making a Basics video for your study process! I would love to see the way you light a still life or bust, and how you would use it to study lighting and form. Sorry if you've covered this already. I think we can agree it's all your fault for drowning your patrons in quality content. Also, I know you must get this question all the time, but can you share your favorite spell or ritual for turning a human being into a meat puppet that will carry out your dark designs under the cold light of the moon?

colorfulpup

Damn Dave, why you looking so cute? Yo wife better watch out cuz you looking like a real snacc

Rsam

What can I do to improve my anatomy and posing, I’m struggling to come up with poses on my own even after ages of studying references

Levail Naik

Hey Dave, last question I promise... For now... How do you go about doing master studies? I have no idea how to go about it.

Stas Aldinov

Hi Dave, I hope you and your family are good, safe and healthy! I love what you have been doing since livestream days. So most parents I know that have even one kid, look exhausted and pretty gray, but in your case not only that you seem more joyful and motivated but your art is better with every piece you post … What’s your secret have you resorted to magic elixirs spiced with alcohol and chocolate ? Are you performing rituals by draining energy from an eldritch god? What is thy secret? PS: Are you open to doing challenges or some reviews/critiques in the future – similar to what you and Dan did back in the Golden Boy era ?

Justin

Hi Dave, I'm so fascinated by how you render your hair! Any tips on how you approach them? Thanks!!

Colorblindraws

Can you say “greg rutkowski” 3 times really fast?

Colorblindraws

Dave, do u have any stories of meeting random interesting people on the street? Also, how do you feel about the comments me and other fellow brazillians leave under ur tweets?

Colorblindraws

Career question, as Ive decided I want to work with fantasy illustration and such, I asked a friend of mine to critique my work, and he said I shouldnt be focusing on finishing illustrations, but instead shift my focus to practice more gesture and composition, since that would lead to much better work in the future. And now I ask you Dave, do u think its worth it to finish pieces just so I can build a portfolio now, or is it better to just focus on studies and try to build a portfolio later in line Context: Im not in need of work, and I can live at least 1 more year without having to Also, thanks for bringing such good work for us every month, best 5 bucks Ive ever spent

elijah eddings

hi dave what was your experince with portraiture from making egg heads to these crazy one you do now. I'm in egg head stage and I guess I need some inspiration.

Riley Spalding

Hello David. I had a question regarding cash money. Im going to be moving into a new apartment soon where my rent will be around 1,300 a month which is much higher than my current rent. As some one who is currently only making about 200-400 per illustration I'm wondering how realistic a new living situation would be. So my question is, when you were first able to start making more money a month when starting out was it because you were making more per job, or because you were able to finish more low paying jobs in a smaller time frame? Im thinking if I can just work on my speed, then moving into a new apartment might be doable.

Christopher

Hi Dave, what’s the coolest thing you’ve ever seen both art related and in life?

Mario Flores

When someone says they use transparency painting what does that mean?

BenjahTD

Hey dave! Skull and Shark when?

Tony Holdsworth

Hey Dave, long time creamer, first time screamer. When you were first getting serious about art, how did you balance a day job, building a portfolio and client work? I want to draw the stuff that makes money in the short term while also setting myself up to get work from companies instead of random people from work. P.S. I think it's really sweet that you start every post wishing us well. Thanks!

Anton

Is PS your new best friend or you still use CSP for sketches and rendering

Andrew Jacobs

Whatup Dave. Godzilla vs Kong......who ya got and why?

Miblert

Hey davie, I am a new patron, and have been watching all the Q&As. These have been great videos to listen to while drawing, and I also have listened to your streams on youtube over and over again so thanks. I always found it a lot easier to listen to these kinds of things while working, also you've definitely helped me a lot by sharing your experiences. My question is, when you were fighting a snake as a kid how come you weren't terrified and just ran away? Also you must've had a hard time carrying your big heavy balls around as a small boy. I think I am asking this because I feel like I need to experience these kinds of terrifying things, I can't imagine being in any one of your stories and not freaking out and just dying. Also congrats on the successful patreon, and may you and your family be well

Lagarok (Ohletob)

hello Dave, first i would like to say that i'm very thankful for you answering my last question, that really made me take a different approach to my art, you are a really amazing artist. My actual question may sound dumb, but how do you charge your freelances? I already have my prices but i wanted to see how artists like you manage this.

Andi Fikri

Hello Dave, I know you don't want to read grateful words from your Patreon, So I just go straight to the question. Do you have specific movies/films that inspired you the most in writing? and movies you love the concept art and the design of it ( like lord of the rings for example) Thanks for the content and your awesome work Dave!

Moth Dweller

Hey Dave, Love the Patreon, have been following you since about 2016 and it's really cool to see how much you grew your online presence and art skills. Do you have any tips or specific practices to improve draftsmanship and drawing from observation? I love seeing good draftsmanship and drawing from observation seems like an essential skill to be able to study effectively. I would love to build up my ability to study and draftsmanship and would love to hear your perspective on it. Have a good month, thanks a lot for all the good stuff.

Craig Herbert

Dave, I'll throw a none-art question at you! What was it like becoming a Dad when you had your first kid? I don't see myself growing up enough to be able to be responsible for a mini version of me, but at the same time I'm warming up to it. There have been all too serious talks with my partner about having a kid, and it's terrifying (but also cool). Did you freak out completely and was there an "Oh shit why didn't I do this sooner" moment? I got made redundant last year so I've started my freelance artist life. It's super tough at the moment but I'm starting to see better months as time goes by, and the dream would be to cover rent AND bills from it. This does mean I have been nominated to be a Stay at Home Dad, given I can work from home. Is this your situation (post pandemic)? Sorry for the ramble, I may have been drinking a little.

Moth Dweller

What are your thoughts on someone devoting their entire life to creating something like berserk? It's insane how beautiful the drawings, designs and compositions are and the story is phenomenal.

Dean Brorson

What's up Dave, I hope you and your family are having a great start to 2021. My question is what are your thoughts about scanning in a sketch/painting on paper/canvas to render digitally to a finish the illustration? Keep well, thank you for the great content!

Serkan Göçer

Hey Dave! Will you do any Warcraft arts? Would love to see this with your style and amazing tutorials

Joseph Weston

I am seconding the Warcraft art! It would be awesome to see your take on it! Especially if you took inspiration from the older games' aesthetics, particularly 2&3. I had those artbooks when I was but a wee lad, and even tho they don't quite stand up to shiny modern artstation standards, they have a lot of charm based more on the inspiration of the ideas themselves.

Joseph Weston

Also Dave, I've been trying to implement your workflow into my client work, and I messed it up spectacularly. And it's your fault. No I'm kidding haha, but I did totally mess it up. On the plus side my personal work is going great. Being adaptable is still the hardest thing for me.

Ahmed Alqirsh

QUESTION hello Dave how is it going? Can you please give me advice on what to do if going the self taught route( due to not being able afford classes online) such how many hours, what effective fundamentals to study, etc ?

Josh Usmani

Hey Dave, my wife got me a year-long subscription for Christmas and we’ve been really loving the content, especially the videos. Wanted to ask about client work. Do they give you access to reference libraries or do you have to find all the references yourself? I know Marvel specifically is very particular about their characters and I’m wondering what kind of resources they offer their freelancers, if any. A belated congratulations on your newborn! Thank you for offering so much insight and so many resources for such an affordable price!

Alex Nogueira

Hey Dave, in the future you pretend to make some art from other games? Such as Sekiro, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy and so on? So much love from Brazil. I'm big fan of your work and I wish success to your career!

Anton

How often do you experience (or have experienced in the past) negative emotion while drawing? Boredom, lack of clear direction, being ashamed of stuff you put out (I’m talking about technical quality, I know that you’re an unhinged pervert), things like that. Do you pay attention to those things and try to find the source of those emotions or you just suffer through? Would you do something differently about it now if you were to return to the past?

Anton

Also, not a question, but the anime guy you are trying to rip off has a youtube channel and he uploads his speedpaints daily. You were talking how you were unsure what his pipeline is exactly, so in case you weren’t aware here you go - youtube.com/c/hungryclicker

Alderson19

Man how long does your average piece take? Like each character on your blood borne piece let’s say

Mush

I have a weird question. Whats the inside joke with writing patrion on every of your posts on social media?

Marino Gardiner

In the future will you ever offer a mentorship type of tier on patreon? Just to give patrons more of a one on one discussion and advice for improving art and all of that?

Dean Brorson

Whats up Dave, Hopefully this gets into part 2! What is your advice on working on numerous personal projects not finishing them getting bored and jumping to the next big idea. What are some tips and trick you've learned over the years to get shit done but also not letting any new and potentially better ideas not slip by? Thanks man!

W.

Hey, can we expect you to post some of your older artworks (2012- 2015) in high res/PSDs here on your patreon? Like Legends of Cryptids or your old illustrations for MTG? huge fan of your older stuff.
