What I can remember, the middle initial D in certain character's name has an importance to the series. It will be explained in future episodes. But Rodger's first name is spelled Gol, I know it's confusing and it sounds like gold. I hope this help, but if anyone can correct me, please do.

His actual name is Gol D. Roger. The government started calling him Gold Roger to hide the fact that he has the middle initial D in his name. I don't want to get too far into it because it might spoil some stuff but just know that the initial D in names is significant.
