Parafolk Editor: Sliders or Push/Pull? (Patreon)

Hi!

Since I'm currently working on the Parafolks and the character creation tools in Paralives, I wanted to get your input on something. Character editors typically offer ways to resize or move body parts and facial features. To do that, I know some people prefer good old sliders like in The Sims 2 and 3 while others prefer grabbing different parts to drag and resize them directly like in The Sims 4. Some say that sliders are more precise but others argue that pushing and pulling directly is more intuitive. What do you think about that? Please vote to let me know what would be your favorite way to customize your Parafolks!

Why not both? Yes, that's always an option! :) But I want to know your favorite way!  Don't hesitate to reply to this post if you have comments or ideas related to editing Parafolks!

could hair length/style be a possible push/pull or slider option too? like have certain preset hair styles, but give the option to adjust the length as well as color? so excited to see what the result will be!!

I think if you would implement a detail mode for their face, sliders could be used then, because sometimes it’s hard to find all the places you can push and pull, so maybe a mix of both?

I think push and pull is great when done properly. It makes things much more intuitive and also faster. I don't mind sliders but I find it easier to use push and pull.

Honestly a tough choice. I think either option would be good ... or maybe a combination where the player has the option to push/pull but also edit specifics with sliders? (Though I’m not sure if a system like that would be too difficult to create or be something that’s possible for Paralives)

Sliders make it a lot easier to know that your characters don't have wacky proportions. I miss having them.

i think push and pull allows you to make unique characters much easier. i never got the hang of the sliders in the sims 3.

I feel like I got less nuance with sliders vs push pull. Slightly nsfw example but a slider can give a character larger breast but what about shape, how they hang, where are they largest etc push pull is great for that. But both is ideal!

If it weren’t for the sims 4 I wouldn’t have ever created myself in the game or anyone else thanks to the pull and grab feature please add that or why not both ? for those who do not like the pull and grab they’ll have the sliders as well.

The pushing and pulling is one feature from The Sims 4 that I actually like, but a combination of both would be the optimal choice if that were to be an option.

Push and pull is better in my opinion, as you can just drag it to where you want and don’t have to click onto 100 different tabs to change the shape of an eye. I don’t play sims 3 much, but I find it annoying that you have to ok the part of the eye you want to edit and then change the right slider, but then to do the nose you have to go to a different section! The push pull of Sims 4 makes it a lot faster. That’s just my thoughts though, I think including both would be nice for those who like the slider!

Please do both. Having sliders as a backup is really helpful for folks like me that have coordination issues, helps me get things more precise.

I like Brynjas thinking! Push/pull for the general thing but sliders in detailed mode! I always thought I liked the sims 4 way best but I tried Sims 2 the other week and was chocked at how much I enjoyed the sliders hehe. So I'd love a mix.

I think that push and pull like sims 4 is a bit more customisable as you can drag things up and down as well (such as moving the eyes outwards, inwards, up or down) which is a little too much to put into sliders I think - it’s quite confusing having like 4 different sliders just for the eyes (making bigger/smaller, making them wider/rounder, up/down, and outwards/inwards). Hope this makes sense

I like both ways, but the thing that's missing with Sims 4 push and pull is that you can't save or document the settings you used to recreate later. As a control freak CAS junkie, I need data! To me the ideal option would be a push and pull interface with underlying numbers that you can save to document what you created.

I think both would be nice and help in specific scenarios. They'd pick up wherever the other may encounter any problems.

I feel like maybe a combination of both would be good? I know in the sims 4 you cannot get some pets to even look close to irl counterparts simply because not all the push and pull controls are there (like leg length).

I think what annoys me about sims 4 push and pull is the lack of proper indication on which area you are adjusting. Its indicated with a faint blue glow. Maybe if it was more obvious and worked better with the panes of the face it would be more intuitive. I would like a mixture of both sliders and push and pull though if possible

I'd say a mix of both, i like the new push and pull feature for the sims 4 but sometimes it's very tedious and I would have apprectiated more sliders.

I genuinely prefer push and pull in almost every way. I've always felt it was more intuitive and it let me do deep customizations on a much deeper level.

The push-pull is my preferred method. But it can be a little tricky to master - there are a lot of little adjustable areas that hide a bit. A few of them I didn't find until recently, after years of playing the game! So I guess a combo would be ideal, but I'd lean toward using push-pull if I have the option.

The reason I say push and pull is because I fell in love with sims 4's character creator because of how different it was compared to the previous sims games- it added something refreshing, new and exciting to the franchise and was one of its biggest selling points. I think paralives should have push and pull as the main character creator function, but also have sliders as an option for those who miss them, just so that everyone's happy. But I do think that push and pull allows creators to get more hands-on with their sims and allowd for more diversity. UNLESS. Unless the sliders also can go to the extremes just like push and pull would allow. Those are my thoughts

Push and pull for height, weight, and posture like the sims 4. But I think sliders for everything else.

While I am a fan of both, in my honest opinion Paralives would be better suited to just pushing and pulling. All of the mechanics we have seen thus far have been tactile and really make you "get your hands dirty" in the building process so I would love to see that same level of immersion in the character creator. Something that might make it a little more intuitive than, say, TS4 would be if editable areas had a "glow" about their zone when you initially hover over them. I believe I saw something like that in Black Desert Online and it really helped keep you from forgetting a spot that could be edited. I don't think sliders are completely misplaced in the character creator though. A popular CAP/DAP speculation that I myself even love is adjustable trait intensities. If you went that direction (no pressure, seriously, just think it's a cool idea!) then sliders would be extremely helpful in fine tuning that. As always, keep up the amazing work! We love it :D

I prefer the push & pull way. It would be good that the parts you are pulling are clearly indicated. Its been a while since I played the sims 4 but I remember it not to be really clear on what you can pull and adjust.

i think i usually like sliders more but i do really like push and pull when its done well. it wasn't perfect but I thought spore's character creator did.

Have push and pull and make the option to change one body part instead of both like maybe one hand is bigger than the other or one eye is more lopsided... Something interesting like that

I'm partial to sliders because I feel like you can fine tune them more and it's easier to replicate (i.e. if you want to remake or share character parameters).

In ts3 they had a slider for eyelashes which is a feature missing from ts4 that I wish we had, but would be hard to do with push and pull. If we could get something like that where some harder to grab features have at least a slider option that would be cool.

Maybe it would be cool to have push and pull but when you click once on a body part you get sliders for that part. That way you could have both. 😄

I feel like with push and pull its really hard to find the areas that will move what you want (especially in faces) but maybe both? I know some people like the feel of push and pull, and it is good in large strokes but its just hard to be precise.

I just started playing the sims 3 again & while the precision of sliders is nice it's A LOT harder than the intuitive system of sims 4. However, the sliders option is only superior with mods that add extra sliders. Base sims 2 & 3 are way inferior to sims 4 push/pull cas.

The Sims 4 way is very intuitive! Once you learn all the parts that can be grabbed, making a sim look how you want them to is very easy. It's one of the things they got right in the base game

I’ll be honest it’s really hard to tell without knowing what the parafolks base look is, but based upon what we’ve seen from the game so far push and pull seems to fit right in with the rest of it!

I loved Sims 4 style of creation but if there were sliders or some sort of a number system, it’d be easier to recreate paras if we have a screenshot of the sliders/numbers. I’m always frustrated when I spend a long time designing a Sim, something goes wrong, and I have to recreate the Sim but just can’t get it how I had it before.

I think sliders are great as you know exactly what can be changed but with faces, as they really make a character, perhaps you can offer a push and pull system for the face only? Like a button that enters "detail mode" and lets you fine tune lip shape, eye shape and slant, cheek puffiness. I think sliders for the rest of the body are more than suitable!

Which one gets me a game to play sooner? That's the one I want. If it is equal development time, then push-pull is more in line with building so I'd favor the "common method" approach.

I like the idea of a push/pull overview style to get the basics, with a slider detail mode if that's at all possible. I like to get into the nitty gritty of making a character I'm going to stick with for a while, but I also like filling up towns with custom made townies, which got tiring super quick. A means to quickly hash out something decent and dive in a bit more for those added touches is ideal.

Well speaking personally I've always felt like I was able to make more different looking sims in the Sims 2 and 3. For some reason a lot of the sims I make in Sims 4 end up looking very similar. I'm not sure if that's an issue with the push/pull way of editing sims or not but I decided to vote for sliders. (I think both would be a good idea though)

Also my main issue with push/pull in Sims 4 is that sometimes it's difficult to know what areas you can manipulate. I think it's easy to miss ways of manipulating the face especially.

Maybe push pull could have alternative controls where you click and then use the scroll wheel to simulate a slider's precision, or even increase / decrease the strength of the push / pull that way

I think push and pull seems to fit the Paralives theme a bit more but I do miss the days of sliders. This is a hard choice because both would be nice. Sliders for the overall appearance and the push and pull for more detailed bits and bobs.

I agree with a lot of the people here saying both if that's not too demanding or unreasonable. Speaking in terms of Sims 4, I always wanted sliders to label what I was manipulating and get that area within the general likeness of what I wanted but then the push/pull feature to go in and specifically tweak little sections that I want different.

I know both is more complicated, but... defenitly both. For me the best way and easier is to just take a slider for the general direction and THEN pushing and pulling the fine details.

Push Pull sculpting is definitely less confusing, but I agree with Sean from an earlier post-- a lot of the Sims 4 creations ended up looking very same-y, since the range of motion for each edit region was very slight. So I think a good bit of freedom in that respect, and also good UI communication about what areas are available to edit, will go a long way.

From what I've seen of Paralives so far, a push and pull system should be used for character creation. Maybe sliders too to have some more precision

I personally like the push/pull method in regards to editing body shapes you have more control of the force of the mouse than a slider would. Especially on the female parts of a character like hips,bust and waist. I think for those who may get confused on what body parts they're adjusting could have a color transparency highlighting those areas.

I prefer the sims 3 sliders because they are more precise, you could put both with the option of choosing the one we want to use in the game, but I definitely prefer the sliders

I would definitely suggest the push and pull. Maybe have a gridded map on the Parafolk so we know what areas to manipulate. Either way, I'm going to love whatever you do!

There's an option missing: Both Can we have a toggle? One of the most frustrating things about modern character creators is when they ONLY give you push-pull OR sliders with numbers. Offer an "advanced mode" toggle maybe? Or just show both. Or compromise and have a small area that shows a tool for manually adjusting the most-recently-clicked push-pull handle's values. (Also, preferably show editable numeric values with the sliders.)

I, too, like the idea of both, but if I had to pick just one I like the push/pull method. It just seems easier and more precise to me because I can "push" things exactly where I want them, but a little more leeway in how far we can push/pull would be ideal.

Why not both, kinda like fallout 4, with an option to hide the sliders? That way, favorite physical features are easier to recreate, then mold into whatever that character is.

I personally enjoy the push/pull in Sims 4 but either option wouldn't be a breaking point for me. I know this is a bit off topic but as far as personalities go, I like how the Sims 2 used zodiac signs, and it would be cool to see that in Paralives, but also maybe adding elements of the MBTI?

Push/Pull is my favourite way but there is something which bothers me about it. There are areas on the face I might not realise I can manipulate because I can't find them with my mouse... this bothers me on sims 4. - - something else I tend to do rather than spending hours upon hours messing in creator is select prefabs. I love having a list of prefabs on the side I can just browse through. different nose shapes, eyebrow shapes, mouth shapes and eye shapes to select from allow me to get into the game faster and are great for players who don't want to spend so much time creating their characters and would rather jump right into gameplay.

The push pull are just WAY to finicky for my taste (especially for the facial features). I like the sliders much more (sims 3 style), besides in the advanced mode of the sliders you can do everything you can do with a push/pull in a way more controlled manner. So honestly I would like to see the option both in the game if possible :)

as one who has been playing since one. I can say sims 4 has the easiest one to work with. in the others, you have to look through a lot of felts to do it. and I often ignored and just picked a finished face ( my sims characters in 2 and 3 always looked the same) with push and pull I have been much more creative with looks.

Playing Sims 4, I enjoyed the push and pull features quite a bit. It was easier for me to just change what I want to in the moment instead of pooling over a list of sliders to find the one I want. Especially since I have the attention span of a goldfish and get myself sidetracked way too easily on something else in the meantime, then ultimately forget to finish what I initially set out to do.

I really enjoy a push/pull function to modify characters! Especially for faces, I like to fine tune them since we all have a nose, lips, eyes, eyebrows and so on, yet all human faces look so different and unique! A slider for the body frame would be nice tho, with the possibility to adjust some parts of it with a push/pull function. Keep up the great work!

I hope we have height sliders Alex! I definitely agree that Sims 4 sliders allow for way more customisation then its predecessors 2 and 3. I just really hope that sliders in Paralives will be a lot more customisable from height, to shoulders, finger lengths (musicians etc) as well as hair length too. Thank you Alex

I don't mind either option providing there are some decent premade ones because I honestly suck at creating my own characters. With sims I generally download other people's characters and adjust slightly.

I enjoy the push/pull for fine tuning details of a character. On the other hand I find sliders to be helpful for big picture adjustments such as length and width of the body or part.

Tbh if I prefer push and pull if the character is HIGHLY customisable, because u can lose urself a bit in a infinite scroll of sliders. But if the sliders win and it is still highly customisable im down and happy. Just bring it on!

I just want to say whatever you do is gonna be awesome, but I would prefer if there was a choice between the two. Push and pull is definitely a lot easier for me, but I would really mind sliding, though it would take some time to find the right ones.

I like the idea of both. As the push and pull would be nice for getting the base structure and then the sliders can be for more details. Like kind of how in sims 4, when you go to push and pull, you are making your base shapes. then you double click and you go into "detail mode" to define them more. So the push and pull and sliders can work like that? Maybe?

Height options would be nice per age group. Like maybe sliders or options for height per age group or generally for all sims. For example short height kid, average beight kid, tall heigh kid... the short adult, medium height adult, tall adult. Or a general options or sliders regardless of age.

Push and pull is nice and I feel like I am more creative with it but to be honest I often miss the sliders when I have something in my mind and I just can't pull it off the push/pull tool drives me nuts. So I like both but I think I actually prefer sliders.

Yo creo que empujar y tirar es mejor, pero combinar ambas opciones seria una herramienta muy precisa y haría que los personajes del juego determinaran un realismo y una precisión casi al milimetro o al pixel jejeje. Aunque yo no entiendo de programación y quizás la idea es algo alocada e inviable. ^^ Pero ahí la dejo. ^^

Hi :) Personally I like the push and pull feature in Sims 4 however I think it is a little bit glitchy and not really smooth enough, especially in detail edit mode. I feel like a combo of the two would work using push and pull for larger more generic shaping and then sliders for the more in depth/detailed. I feel the problem with push/pull in sims 4 is that each are is separate... if it were more dynamic as it pushing the chin in actually helped reshape the whole face rather than them all being individual meshes that would really help! Especially if we wanted to create Para's that are you know famous people that you wanna recreate and stuff I think this would really help. Also less limitations that The Sims have put on their push and pull would be great.

Push and pull make creating sims a bit easier, but the way slider worked in Bodyshop for TS2 was amazing.

I like the sliders best, but I think they can be very limiting, which is what makes the push/pull so great. Both would be appreciated though! And I would like to echo the idea for height adjustment.

Now that I've used sims 4 CAS the sliders on the other games feel limiting. Push and pull is much more intuitive.

I think having both would be better. Being able to push/pull while also have sliders on the side would work well. If a player is having difficulty trying to push/pull one part, the sliders on the side would be able to help and if the sliders just aren’t getting it the way the player wants it, then push/pull. I feel as though sliders would be more general and then push/pull would help be even more customizable, if that makes sense.

I really can't stand push and pull. I can never get the shape I'm thinking of in my mind. The push and pull is just sliders but you cant see their limitations or capabilities. Sliders makes things so much easier

I usually use sliders since I find them easier and quicker but on rare occasions prefer the sims 4 push-pull feature so I can get right in and detail the eye size, eyelashes, etc since push-pull (I find) is easier to do a detailed character with and is more fun to use in a longer design-session

Sliders are for me easier to use. However aesthetic and design wise push and pull looks better to me. I also think it matches the push and pull options we've seen with the walls and objects in the game. 🤔

Push and pull is more intuitive, but I'd love to have sliders as an option. They compliment eachother well I think. Push and pull for broad strokes and initial editing, and sliders for finer control. Like detail edit mode I guess

I do LOVE the sims 4 pull and push but I think there are some options you just need to have sliders for, I'd agree that both would be good, but for the launch Sims 4 CAS would be better.

I think push and pull is more intuitive for fine tuning, since I don't want to search through a bunch of sliders. For more general characteristics like height, muscle mass, and fat, I would prefer sliders.

That their appearance is distinguishable in game is important. Nothing more frustrating than spending hours fine tuning the minute details only to find that in live mode they all look more or less the same. I like to get really specific with their faces in particular. Push and pull makes this easier in many ways, but sliders can help with accuracy. So I'd have to say both :)

Thanking you for letting us share our 2 cents with you Alex :) I actually like both ways. Getting older, my hands shake, which can make push/pull harder for me to fine tune, but having to use my dominate thumb to constantly hold down my mouse button for a slider, ugh. So having both available or ability to toggle for use either way would awesome. One thing that kills me in SIMS4 is having no UP or Down (Page Up/Page Down) ability for the Build/Buy or menu sort.....it's all sliders, needless to say I have to choose to play or to build. I simply can't do both anymore. LOL Thanks again Alex. Blessed be.

If it's any help, I liked the way Dragon Age: Inquisition handled it when it came to the in-depth stuff? It worked a little like those 'personality chart memes' out there (https://i.imgur.com/HvlR1iK.png), and depending on which position you chose, different things where modified. I'm terrible at explaining, here's a video instead. https://youtu.be/UIkZHmIwGAg?t=90 I find it practical in the way that you don't have to pinch the specific tiny spot that you want to modify, you can just move your mouse across the whole screen instead.

I liked the sliders for very small detailed things, but the push pull is useful for bigger body parts. So sliders for facial features but push pull for legs, arms, calves etc.

I'm of the opinion that both would be the best option. Push & pull for general sculpting, sliders for finer details. Providing presets would also be a good idea, as long as we aren't constrained by them and are able to mould them however we like. The Sims 4 fell short here, as you're often "trapped" within your chosen preset and don't have much wiggle room.

Both, for certain features a slider would be great while others benefit from the push-pull.

I really do prefer the push/pull I find it so much easier to use, plus I feel like you can create more unique looking features that way

Obviously from a developer's perspective it would be a lot of work to do both, but man would that be great! The push/pull is great, but sometimes if I'm making families, I miss the slider option to keep things the same, or to make slight changes.

I prefer the sliders if there’s an option to touch a part of the face and parts of the body then use the sliders to adjust so we can easily replicate characters.

I like sliders because when I do push and pull it kind of comes out looking weird and off. Maybe that means it's just my problem lol. But whichever is fine

I find sliders much more precise and easier to control. I wouldnt mind push pull as long as there's an undo feature (because I would 100% mess it up at least once lol)

Echoing other comments to say please please have both. I find Sims 4 CAS to be excellent and very intuitive, but I really would also have prefered to have sliders in addition. I am never positive what spots I can and can't control, and sometimes I'll think I'm doing something different but realize it's the same push/pull, or the opposite: I miss that I could've adjust that spot. For the body I agree with the person above--who cares about exact precision. But details I find quite difficult and I very often mess up.

I'd like to vote for both too, I feel like I can't always be as precise with the push and pull, so it would be nice to start with push/pull to get the general shape, but then be able to fine-tune things with sliders.

While pushing and pulling is certainly more intuitive, it's often frustrating if you want to correct a certain aspect (especially if it's a few moves back). Sliders make this a lot easier. It would be nice if one could use both. especially with things like length and width. I'm always especially frustrated when trying to get nice and sharp cheekbones. You could, for example, allow push and pull to "move" things around and use sliders to change their length and width.
