Saddle up your horses as the lads, along with Rosey Armstrong (Hans Gruber and the Die Hards), slap on their Crosses of Gold and dive headlong into the varied and wild world of Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). Topics include what makes Christian music Christian music, the rampaging sexiness of Michael W. Smith, and the importance of artistic integrity in an industry seemingly designed to destroy it.

This episode jumpstarted my friendship with Rosey and got me into the ska community I'm currently a part of, I'm so excited to revisit this one! :')

2026-09-07 00:00 My parents had Mark Lowry's Ten Stories Tall on VHS and I can't tell you how many times we watched it. It's completely engrained in my memory.

By Tove!

My adopted brother had one of Mark Lowry cassettes, so I listened to "I can eat it all" soooooo many times as a kid.

Man I love Hans Gruber and the Diehards. I still have the sock puppet they threw at me when I saw them at SPI fest last year

Okay, so I spent 2008 traveling as a carrier and we all used to "aquire" satellite TV though less than legit means. Most people with their own trailer had an old primestar or direct TV dish and a generic receiver box. Once or twice a month we would get the codes off the internet. Then you just aligned the dish to the south and had every single channel, including premium channels.

Have any of you fellas seen the Estus Perkle snuff—I mean Christian films? They have everything, grainy, troubling footage, a creepy old white preacher man, and that same preacher man asking “Will you come? Will you come?” Three times.

Aaron Pozos

Neeeed the Bibleman episode!!! Had so many of the VHS tapes and saw him live

Eliza Blackhart

Question? Any other Ska band members you'd want to bring on as guests?

Maladapted

Why does cross of gold sound like GHOST

I know it's a throwaway line in the episode, but the mention of the 85% effective rate of condoms presses a particular berserk button in my brain. That number comes from a study that's over twenty years old that actually stated that condoms reduce the chance of HIV infection by 85% if you're having sex with an HIV positive partner. Condoms are even more effective at preventing pregnancy, given that a sperm is much bigger than the HIV virus. However, you'll never hear that from a right wing evangelical.

I'd love to hear a sequel to this one day that gets into Christian punk and metal from the early 2000s

Gorbant

YES! I would love if they did a retrospective on "If Footmen Tire You". The scene with the classroom is transcendent (youtube.com/watch?v=IVG1_lnjw2s)

I hope everyone gets well soon. Long COVID is a scourge.

The original was one of the first TWOAPW episodes I listened to way back when, been meaning to re-listen so this was a real treat. Still waiting on that Keith Green episode though...

Now that I can hear the clips, I can say that “Cross of Gold” sounds a LOT like Trevor Rabin-era (80s) Yes. Which is probably an insulting comparison for a lot of people, but I happen to really like that era of Yes. Also kind of interesting because Jon Anderson has never identified as Christian (that I’m aware), but one of the things that always set Yes apart was how spiritual their lyrics are. I wonder if there was some influence.

Several of the songs in the second half of this episode made me feel like I was having a stroke and I am half convinced that Bryan and Rosey made up Carman as a joke to fuck with AJ and also me. Thanks for another terrifying insight into a world that my parents protected me from.

Jordyn Clementi

Well, lads, you finally hit me with the emotional damage ray directly. One measure of "I'm not Ashamed" and I nearly died of shame and what are now bad memories.

One of my favourite ever episodes that you guys have put out! I don't know what I was expecting, but this was such an insightful look into the kinds of music that was around in your childhoods. I'm not from the United States, so when you guys mention being raised Catholic vs. Protestant and the differences, it feels strange to draw such a close attention to it, but given this was your background culture it's no wonder it made such an impact.

Nancy Carr

Please do a show on the Carman “Yo Kids” album and/or a show on Carman in general! This episode is so great.

Alex

Ugh I hate these new special editions. Using CGI to insert Whit into every shot is pandering like hell. This is why it's important to hold on to your original episodes of TWOAPW on VHS.

Alex

This was great to revisit, I was not prepared for the clip of that Carman song.

i grew up with a lot of late-2000s through 2010s CCM. i never listened to dc talk (except for a remastered version of the song jesus freak i think?), but absolutely loved the tait-era newsboys, kevin max audio adrenaline, and tobymac all individually. the only music i really ever heard early in my childhood was christian radio that my mom played (specifically k-love, the the sirius xm christian station later). i used to buy albums from these bands on itunes and listen to them on a little red mp3 player my parents got for me specifically because of how much i loved the then-atomized dc talk. i’ll be forever thankful for discovering switchfoot early in middle school, which started me towards listening to actual good music. i still go back and listen to them sometimes because they have some genuine bangers. i haven’t listened to CCM since probably 2014, so i’m not sure what the scene is up to now (it probably isn’t good), but i’d love to hear y’alls thoughts on stuff from that era or now and compare it to your experience of CCM from the 80s and 90s. great episode!

BJ Thomas was also fairly difficult to work with. Source: have worked with him. He threatened to stop singing "Hooked on a Feeling" if even a single audience member said "ooga chocka", and later threatened to get me fired if I got any more stage snow on him. Dumping that snow bag on him at the end of the fight was very gratifying.

Probably Nobody

The "One Bad Pig" band reminds me a bit of Listener.

Iain Standing

AJ calling that song Death Metal nearly killed me

Rosey Armstrong

Oh shit! I know Listener hahaha we'd go see him in northwest Arkansas when he was still banging on an old washing machine (before Wooden Hearts)

Rosey Armstrong

Ooohhh shit yeah I had those CDs. Pretty sure they are still sitting on my parents shelf 🤣

Rosey Armstrong

I've told them I'm down to go there, as well as do some ska

Rosey Armstrong

Same. We had a whole comedy VHS of his 🫣😅

Probably Nobody

That's crazy! I stumbled across him around the time that the Struggleville album came out on like Myspace or Purevolume? I feel old now that I realize how long ago that actually was. 😭😭😭

Probably Nobody

Or as Lifeway Books called it "alternative rock" lmao

Rosey Armstrong

Omg I'm sorry for everyone in the comments that I responded to with the exact same things I already said in the episode 😅🫠 I did not remember and I'm a grandma sometimes haha

Samuel Cain

Idk how they keep missing Reliant K and all the songs they play

Neuronin

'I'm Not Ashamed' immediately rang a bell in my mind that took HOURS to figure out...the melody is just the chorus of Nik Kershaw's 'Wouldn't It Be Good' sped up!

Kyle Cassidy

Would love a minisode on Five Iron Frenzy. I had the weird experience of getting into them as a non-religious ska kid, then only discovering later that they were a Christian group.

Caroline

thank you for this episode and for reigniting my preteen horny-but-confused-about-it crush on kevin from dc talk

Ciara Rhiannon

Still waiting for that Bible Man episode lol

Mae

The little intermission at 58:28 sounds like something you'd hear in Xavior Renegade Angel.
