Absolutely correct take about Jess in Gilmore Girls. Gilmore Girls is only properly understood when one realizes Rory and Lorelei are the villains of the show

TalkGibberish

Think theres an audio problem at 39:10?

MuppetImp

Good morning! I hope you explode. <3

Hugh Kearney

I believe the one foot on the floor comment is a reference to a (maybe apocryphal) Hayes Code rule about couples appearing in bed on screen. The "one foot on the floor" ensured that no hanky panky was happening, at least to vanilla people with no imagination. Also, some may hope you explode, but I'm built different. I hope you implode.

I'M SO HYPED FOR THIS

Clarp Blarpkiss

You hate to be eye-to-eye with a little guy

Kadoken

Crazy how much Kevin Porter sounds like Paul McCusker

Sen Holbrook

The world AJ has built in the Odyssey interstitials is one of my favorite fictional worlds I’ve ever seen. The detail, the science-fantasy world that he’s built. Truly exceptional. I hope you all explode.

J

I have only glancing exposure to Gilmore Girls bc my mom and sister are megafans and I still know what AJ is talking about

BarFly

Oh, and I hope you guys explode.

BarFly

Thanks, now I'm thinking about an American Pie situation.

Stephanie R

I've heard the phrase keep one foot on the floor said by old southern people, but I'm coming up blank with what the context/connotation was. Google tells me, it was a hayes code guideline when 2 characters were in a bedroom, and it's a pool shot rule (it's only a legal shot if you had at least one foot on the floor).

Stephanie R

Found a few examples of the phrase in stories: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.al.com/life/2020/09/dont-give-me-a-bad-hushpuppy.html%3foutputType=amp https://www.louisianafolklife.org/lt/virtual_books/guide_to_state/stokes.html - "Considerable humor was associated with bachelor life in the boarding house. Jokes were frequent about how far boarders could stretch for food at the dinner table, and a tall man was said to have a good "boarding house reach." It was sometimes said that table etiquette required that each diner keep one foot on the floor at all times during a meal." https://blog.lehmans.com/wisdom-from-my-dad-jay-lehman/#:~:text=Good%20manners%20are%20important.,doesn't%20grow%20on%20trees. - "keep one foot on the floor when reaching across the table"

J

The punchline on that interstitial man...

Matthew Johansson

We had this rule at my Christian college. One foot on the floor when you are with your girlfriend, so, I guess, they thought you wouldn’t be fucking. It reflects more on what they thought having sex was. We got around that and the rule about having the door open during co-ed nights. I bet it comes from the Hayes code like Stephanie R above said.

hotboxlegomenon

i can make that hawksferatuah cross stitch! if it’s wanted

Nathan Woods

What is Pops Coin if not the buying and selling of conversation, really? That would explain why it's taking so long to produce the ledger, gotta write down every word

NowhereMan661

I hope you all hawksplode on that thang

Sasha MH

The introduction of Chris! I gasped aloud!

NowhereMan661

Banjo-Kazooie got me going "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow..."

P.A.L.

Oh now that was a fun interstitial. I'm slowly smooshing together ideas I've got about where this is all going but I fully expect I'm not gonna be able to call it in advance.

ElectronShed

Regarding pies and legs: I assumed they meant it in a "Jenny's pie is so good it'll make you thump your leg like a dog. Please keep yourselves together despite that ;)" kind of way. Also, I hope you all exlode!

Max

I hope you all explode.

Ingrid Johnson

This was such a delightful Podyssey crossover! ❤️

零 Rei

Yes, that was a courting rule when my parents weee college students. I think the joke, such as it was, is that the pie is so good it’s as sinful as premarital sex.

JGE

The existential horror of Meinong's jungle ♥️

I Love Brian Alford's Bible Corner

Addendum: I was obsessed with Ma and Pa Kettle when I was in fifth grade back in 1995. I asked for VHS tapes of their movies for Christmas. I used to go around quoting Pa Kettle. At school.

Colin English

Whenever I heard Mike Trout in this episode I keep imagining the baseball player doing the voiceover

Thea

Y'all continue to be my favourite podcast in the genre of "sad boys do comedy about their childhood trauma". Genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, thanks for what you do. It's helped me so much.

Camoose the Uncrackable Egg

I listen to this at work and because of work noises I didn't hear the start of the ad break and it took me a couple minutes to realize the interstitial had started. XD

Gerald Pitts

I'm picturing the joy that brought to the 5th grade teacher who was probably right in the Ma n Pa Kettle strike zone.

Desmond Gonzalez

Okay the sound design for this ad break was bonkers. The dial up noise over someone screaming in agony is inspired!

Kyle Clark

I had that exact response lol. It's such a distinct name that you can't possibly imagine someone else having.

Dergon

Apologies to Kevin, but he sounds so much like Jeff Lewis, Connie's baseball playing ex.

Ms. Charlie

Okay, for my money, the "one foot on the floor" thing's in reference to cartoons where a guy floats towards the smell of a pie on a windowsill. Like, this thing's gonna put you on Cloud Nine, bitch, so try not to float away. That's what I see at least, because I LOVED cartoons with pies on windowsills growing up.

Naho Yuzu

excellent episode, was nice to hear what ended up feeling like an alternate universe odyssey

When I was a child we would go to cafe’s all the time. Only sometimes would we go to an ice cream shop.

LogalogJack

The uncanny feeling of the intro music for the interstitial is unparalleled. I don’t know if it’s a John Campbell b-side or someone is just that talented at imitating his style but holy shit.

LogalogJack

WAITWAITWAITWAITWAIT Earl Boen’s character is named Richard hfhhfjdjhdhskskjdj there’s a fic here… something to do with cruising… and dick… double dick and double Dick… I’ll get back to you on that

Dergon

I had a Ma and Pa Kettle VHS tape as a kid in the 90s, but I did not ask for it.

Elizabeth Power

That makes sense! I thought it was like… Wasn’t there an old thing in the Hayes code or something where if you had people on the bed or something they had to have 1 foot on the floor? But I thought that was too sophisticated for Odyssey !

Elizabeth Power

I looked up the “snarl of men” line thinking you had taken some other poem or something and sung it to the tune of Yankee doodle to sound creepy. I was wondering if it was T.S. Elliot or something. I went to look up what it was and was pleasantly surprised to find out that that is an actual verse of Yankee Doodle, forgotten by time.

Johnny Schmidt

I would pay slightly more than a reasonable amount of money for a TWOOPW tee shirt with the phrase "Maw and Paw Kettle say 'six seven'" featured prominently

Johnny Schmidt

Oh awesome I love torturing my kids with sonic references in my podcasts. I thought a litigation possibility caused the audio to be purposefully silenced

A.E. Ross

Felt genuine fear when I realized Whit was talking to me (the listener) during the interstitial. Hope you explode.

Elizabeth Hamm

Kevin, I’m such a huge fan, I hope you personally explode! Pod bless

Elizabeth Hamm

The Aristophanes/Egg and I comment made me laugh out loud

Vanessa Edding

I'm so late but the "one foot on the floor" thing is maybe a Haye's Code joke? If a couple was kissing on a bed they each had to keep one foot on the floor in the scene. I hope you explode.

Angel Feet Adventures

When I worked at a strip club, the rule for the private rooms was "one foot on the floor" which, was a rule not followed, especially when foot guys wanted those feet STEPPING on them

MaidenlessBrewer

I only know about Ma and Pa Kettle because my childhood home is less than a mile from Egg and I Road. I think my parents had a copy on VHS.

Jimmy Leal

The pie rule is because the Watchers try to take you when you are distracted rating pie but they cannot if both your feet are in the ground.

Danielle King

Ummm...I hope you explode, I guess? Also: as a kid I never realized that Whit is a James Dobson stand in and now I can't unsee it.
