The lads return to the New Year just in time for the end of the world as they kick off their annual Rapture Ranuary with a follow up to one of the most influential Christian films of all time: A Thief in the Night: A Distant Thunder. Topics include the origins of premillennial dispensationalism, the trustworthiness of mustaches, and what it means to be shaped by a world view where you live in constant fear of the U.N. beheading you with a guillotine.

It’s not strictly rapture but Estus pirkle’s If Footmen Tire You What Will Horses Do is a fascinating piece of evangelical apocalyptism

Zipzapzop

Can’t wait for the epic mickey ep

Laura Platt

Honestly, I found Thief in the Night II was much more bareable after I cranked the gamma all the way up.

Incredible. Speaking of how the podcast has grown am I the only subscriber or even listener in the Republic of Malta?

Hugh Kearney

Everyone who said, "Holy Grail?" raise their hand. {raises hand}

The Worst of All Possible Worlds

P.A.L.

The Hobby Lobby stuff legit made me cackle

BarFly

I also watched Road Construction Ahead (and recently found it again on YouTube). I am also not diagnosed.

BarFly

Also, I liked the Human League reference, Josh.

Nemo

These voice clips sound like a 90s FMV game

Evelyn Miner

AJ is so right at the end about Christianity being designed as a philosophy for premodern peasants. You might even say... it's the opiate of the masses 😎😎😎 (*guitar riff*)

Lain of the Wired

The thing that gets me about this is just like, the specific way they distinguish the like, satanic world order from mundane tyrannies is the *sadism* which like

Lain of the Wired

That's just like all that's left for these people now

Dergon

I can't see a thing, this podcast is too dark

Luca

You may have 2 entire listeners here. Or maybe a tourist with good taste passing by, either way if any of you make it to Malta I will glad to provide recommendations for our beautiful island with a surprisingly active theater scene.

EMC

Warren Miller movies mentioned!!!!

Sam Reader

I didn't know Superstar Billy Graham was invited to the White House and I wish he wasn't such a piece of shit in these conversations.

Maladapted

In Minnesota feeling my community go into action, and be separated or bereaved by the state. It's terrifying and I've never seen the community mutual aid networks be stronger. We're trying to replace that fear with preparation. Idk. Thank you for acknowledging our neighbors' bravery. Never felt more proud to be a MN punk and more ashamed to be an American

the blurst of times

As an Iowan I will have you know that the largest annual bike tour in the world (RAGBRAI) was started in the 70a by a pair of Des Moines Register reporters.

The theory that 666 is code for Nero is extremely convoluted and nowadays largely discredited, especially since there's a much simpler explanation. Like a lot of arcane symbolism in the Book of Revelation, it seems to just be a reference to the Old Testament. In both Kings and Chronicles, "666 talents of gold" is stated to have been the yearly income of King Solomon. You know, the king whose incredible wealth caused him to turn away from God. Because you're not supposed to let desire for wealth lead your thoughts (head) or actions (right hand). Consult the Letter of James chapter 5, verses 1-6 for details (or the Magnificat, or the Traders in the Temple episode of the Gospels, or like 500 other bits in the Bible that tell you you shouldn't be rich or try to be rich).

Nick Gully

I lost it laughing hard at Agent 47 buying model trains in Hobby Lobby.

Moss

I'm obsessed with the Jesus slasher in Des Moines. John Carpenter wishes he had that kind of juice.

Max

This episode is a fucking banger, start to finish.

Sweet Jacky

I need a supercut of all the AJ's Horse Corners 😂

Rydr Strobl

A wild cut to Warren Miller. Did not expect that to show up in this

What you guys said about this stuff being so anxiety-brain feels so real to me as an outsider. Not to brag or anything but I *have* an anxiety disorder and that whole thought process of, "The world is bad and evil and is getting worse every day and I constantly have to be prepared so it doesn't take me by surprise," is something I have to fight against in my own brain every day in order to actually live a life and improve the world in the small ways I can. I can only speak from my personal experience, but my particular anxiety in the past few years has been laser focused on, "I have to be prepared to die and/or create the circumstances of my own death," and this is what a lot of soothsaying about the rapture sounds like to me especially in the context of these Thief in the Night movies. You have to be prepared either to be raptured or be killed on Earth. It feels like you can't win, and it's so self-defeating. Like you said, the goal is not to *improve* the world but to *leave* it. I somehow escaped being raised Evangelical despite living literally twenty minutes from Liberty University my entire youth, but I have quite a few friends who were. Grew up with Adventures in Odyssey, believing in the rapture, all that. They'd be the first to admit it fucked them up, this kind of anxious, doom-focused thinking.

LogalogJack

Not even 4 minutes in and you’re making an Agent 47 joke just like you did 5 years ago for part one 🙏 we’re so back Edit: I also appreciate the “*if* you purchase things at hobby lobby” because everyone knows they honor they five-finger discount (legally this is a joke) Anyway I’ll actually listen to the episode now

LogalogJack

Nope, only got 10 more minutes in and the dirty Bible is just giving me flashbacks to the bibleman intro. I’ll never be rid of that shot of mud and sticks swiped off the cover. I’m forever cursed with this vision

Wooly's Den

The part where she says she was left behind and the title music starts up feels like I'm about to hear sondheim number describing the world immediately after everyone is raptured

Wayland The Spritesmith

While not quite Slasher Jesus, there is Zombiechrist, a comedy/horror/bizarro film by indie filmmaker and noted schlockdealer Bill Zebub. It's a movie about Jesus (played by a halloween decoration) coming back as a zombie and murdering people while trying to find a woman to make the antichrist with. It's one of those movies that, if you show it to other people, makes them concerned that you might need to be committed, so naturally it's best watched with friends and enough alcohol to kill a hog.

Lynette Steritz

I've been laughing at this episode too much. My coworkers are starting to ask questions I cannot answer.

LogalogJack

One more thing: interstitial was amazing. Timmy’s voice sounded like a perfect blend of Pamela Hayden’s and Katie Leigh’s little boy voice. Uncanny.

ThatMeatGuy

Fun Fact: this film was named A Thief in the Night 2 Shattered Skies in Japan and North America

Nathaniel Sager

That moment of someone changing their beliefs and worldview as everything got more extreme and fascistic didn't happen as much as it should have, but it did happen. At least to me. I still consider myself a "conservative" but I really appreciate the perspective you all share on this podcast helping me broaden my views and try to avoid echo chambers. Thanks for everything you do.

Dellamoux

About the mixer that turns the bowl - Could be a "Spiral mixer". There's a high end brand called Ankarsrum that makes one these days. And some copycats out there.

FelineJay

I know it's not the point of the Editor Brian sidebar but, as someone who was not raised Christian, still isn't Christian, and has no theological education, hearing "John of Patmos" fuckin activated me. A.J. you genius Additionally, as a British (sorry) Monty Python enjoyer, I can confirm we do love that shit, and I did immediately recognise that song from Holy Grail

Greg Dean

I genuinely thought I was getting the Thief 2 episode and I am simultaneously enraged AND pleased to be wrong, let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Greg Dean

I scream every time there's a Horse Corner. If anyone knows if there's a supercut, I beg you to link me up.
