Julian Feeld (Super Structure, QAA Podcast) joins the lads in the end times as they cover the 1978 film adaptation of the father of all Rapture narratives: The Late Great Planet Earth. Topics include the conspiratorial thinking of dispensational millennialism, the nefarious tree-slut Hal Lindsay, and what it means when your rock solid prophecy keeps having to move the goal posts.

"When you first encountered Evangelicalism, where you blinded by its majesty?"

Alexander Hartson

Brian, thanks for calling out American pop culture having influence from millenarianism. As someone who came from a Calvinist background I can’t stress enough how much it influenced everything in America.

P.A.L.

Well that trumpet noise is going to be in my mind forever now.

As someone who was raised in Evangelicalism (and renounced it later) it’s weird hearing normal people talking about it. For instance: in Evangelical culture a ‘Christian’ is not someone who was raised in a Christian family and goes to a Christian church. No, a Christian is only someone who has had a salvation experience and invited Jesus into their heart and devoted their life to Him. If this sounds weird to you it’s because your upbringing was more normal than mine. So the guy saying he “became a Christian” after being raised in a Christian culture makes sense from inside the bubble.

Perfect timing, I just spent like twenty minutes trying to make a "premillennial dispensationalism" pun for a work thing. It's cool that this guy at the end of his life was doing the arc of that pastor from Videodrome. Also this is so apropos given the AI cultists coming out to preach the eschaton of genious computer. Also also "nineteen six seven" was very rude

Adi

I went on a musical evangelical mission to Russia and Eastern Europe with my dad’s band through Daystar so that was a fun connection to make this morning *pukes*

listening to Wells' opening narration about everything the ancient Hebrews DIDN'T accomplish; no architecture, no mathematics, no art; and i'm like oh right these people fuckin sucked. i'm so glad our Judeo-Christian civilization reveres them as our predecessors instead of like, any of the cultures that discovered math.

I recently learned that Christopher Columbus, you know, the guy who invented European civilization controlling the Americas, his original intention for trying to find Asia/stripping the Americas of its wealth through colonialism was to use it to fund a new crusade that would take back Jerusalem from Islamic rule and start the end of the world. This Christian Apocalypticism and it's Imperialistic intentions has literally always been a part of the "American" Project. In a really sickening way, Columbus's goal of using the profits of American colonialism to fund the European conquest of the holy land has succeeded. I really hope the "ending the world" part doesn't also happen...

NowhereMan661

The Rationalists and Zizians are just AI Premillennial Dispensationalists, and also Calvanists. It's insane how our culture just keeps reproducing this kind of derangement.

ChigBungus

Sub to superstructure; it’s extremely good.

NowhereMan661

Any religion that sticks around inevitably becomes the religion of oppression, the hollow ideological justification for the tyranny of the ruling system. There is a fundamental emptiness and plasticity to religion where it can be warped and remade to suit any number of base systems.

This is my fourth serving of Julian this week and I’m not mad about it.

Lyra Lilitu Spellman

These episodes (almost) need a trigger warning for religious trauma 😬

I heard that too 🤨

Gil the Gilded Dragon

Late antique languages do not have a word for orange! Orange comes from the fruit which was introduced to Europe by the Umayyads after trading with China

Elizabeth Power

I am surprised nobody laughed at the part where they were talking about how somebody knew Hal Lindsay and you can hear AJ interject “Biblically!”

Gil the Gilded Dragon

So funny thing: if keeping those terms in English & disregarding the Greek... that is red thrice. Fire red, jacinth red, sulfur red Alas it is red indigoish & yellow Andorra, Armenia, Moldova, Romania & most incriminating my Åland & Mongolia bear the right colors

I was raised in the Seventh Day Adventist church, one of the many denominations to come out of Millerism and the 1888 "Great Disappointment". They have an especially strong take on prophecy (Daniel and Revelation especially) and near-future eschatology. I'm almost certain I saw this book on my parents' shelf when I was younger. Thinking about it now, getting out of that church was good for me present-day self, because I am loosely immune to anyone trying to predict the end of the world. A vital thing in this age.

Jonas Schwammberger

Erich VON DÄNIKEN!! Fun fact, his Name is similar to a slang word we used suring my teenage years for being high (däne). Which probably sums up the dude. Wow, if you ever need to have some research done on that guy, hit me up. He must have made insane amounts of money. He even did a themepark in the early 2000's in Switzerland. And I even visited. Maybe I took a picture. It was before the age of digital photography. I remember little from the themepark. Even my 13-14 year old self was unimpressed. His biggest argument was "see this mayan art? doesn't it look like the man is wearing a helmet, and turning a knob with his hand?" To which I said: "No, not really. Is that all you have?" And it was.

Ian

I'm sorry. Nefarious tree-slut and you don't post the picture!!!????

Mary

I should not have been drinking water when the trumpets started.
