Here’s a cleaned-up version that keeps the casual voice. I assumed the last line meant “the camel is going to need a chiropractor at the very least.” --- So maybe this is too much personal information, but the context makes it funny. I’m a recovering addict struggling with relapses, so I finally got on methadone. Yesterday was my first dose. Fast forward to this morning: I’m in the front hall getting ready to head out the door, and my wife is in the washroom brushing her teeth. She hears me say, “More Adventures in Odyssey shit, yeah!” Now, my wife grew up in a very Christian house Plymouth Brethren, if that means anything to you, I don't know the difference between Pentecostal and a presbyterian. So she comes running around the corner laughing. I asked her what was so funny. She said, “I thought the world had collapsed in on itself. I thought you said Adventures in Odyssey... It was this weird show my parents used to make me listen to...” I told her that’s what I said. She looked at me with all sincerity and put her hand on my shoulder and said sweetheart, you know I love you and I will stick with you through anything. I think I've made that clear but if you have “ found God” and are going to ask me to start going to church… well let's just say our camel might need a chiropractor.

Randy Johnson mentions warms my heart after this weekend DAMN YOU PHILLIES

“I’ll pray for the troops. All the troops- both sides.”

That final episode is so fucking evil. Focus On The Family is a propaganda organization, they are radicalizing people with their rhetoric, very intentionally, with the ultimate aim of getting them to take action. And then when these people do take action and commit hate crimes or pass oppressive legislation, these fucking cretins have the gaul to claim that their actions have nothing to do with what they preach (but of course, they will never actually back down from what they said). It's the fascist equivalent of "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses". Newsflash! Yes I would!

Hydrox came first. Oreo is technically knockoff Hydrox. It's definitely superior, but it's not the original.

Victoria Vanderkloet

Can't wait to read Ezra Klein's John Avery Whitaker did politics the right way

Camoose the Uncrackable Egg

The Smile cult really reminds me both of the cult in Mob Psycho 100 and the real life Happy Science Cult in japan.

R Barry

I was playing Balatro and almost choked on my halls when you started the Balatro bit...

Red Ash VA

Oh no not sexy Dobson in my ears Also taking notes on “Loins Ablaze” 👀

GIfSmooth

The movie should have been named "A Love, A Leg, and A Lisp . . ."

Charli Christine Marker

I love the idea that there’s an early Odyssey episode with a full Uncle Luke parody

Evelyn Miner

As a Wheaton Academy alumna the Todd Beamer/911 mention fully sniped me I walked past the Todd Beamer atrium shrine every single morning 😭

M4-Y4

"Specimen John One Seventeen" ?? Is that an intentional Halo reference or am I losing my mind

Aesurah

That final episode was confising until I remembered what year you'd mentioned it was from. The time when people were rightly pointing out book banning was not a good thing, that forcing religious standards on unwilling people was bad. The episode was just to make the people who are like Whitt - are for banning books and loudly proclaiming who is immoral because they don't have Jesus - feel better, feel justified in doing it. No don't worry if it was the Nazis doing book burning and banning, you are in the right for doing it for God.

YOU

Hey so this odyssey episode really pissed me off lol

By Tove!

Ugghhh. Whit's last act was a sales pitch. I'm gonna throw up

BarFly

"I can't believe that anyone would burn down the gay communist bookshop that I said was a den of Satan."

Daniel Zeller

I think this is the worst set of episodes you’ve covered so far. Which is pretty bad because 3 of the 4 came the shows “good” era.

Elizabeth Power

I really appreciate what you said about not closing yourself off and recognizing that your religion is a part of the world and not against it. I am a religious person, but that’s how I try to live my life and I’ve never heard anyone articulate it like that before. Thanks!

LogalogJack

I’m relistening to the Magnus Archives and the interstitial is scratching the same itch my GOD. Pun kind of intended. Tell me the mice haven’t amalgamated into one big lumbering Whit, please AJ, tell me the tunnels aren’t alive

LogalogJack

And I’m definitely not geeking out at the thematic appropriate way that John is “born” with the same action that “killed” Regis in A Name, Not A Number. Nope. Definitely not.

Bentivegitantus

Wow, the production and acting in the interstitials just keeps getting better. It's seriously impressive.

bethwen

Pleeeease tell me you plan to cover the Ties That Bind saga.

cynicalscriiible

Thiiiis 🤏🏿 close to writing a fanfic where Jason gets trapped in a foreign prison and stays there. Man is too smug and annoying, the VA is doing a good job because I wanna strangle him. He's the worst of John's kids 😒

Wyatt Jordan

That Interstitial was incredible. I should have been listening a long time ago just for the Odyssey commentary, but I had no idea you guys did that kind of thing. The John-117 and Hide-and-Seek bits had me grinning like an idiot in the car. 😅

Beth Derr

(1:49:45) Oopsies Whit, you used the 😱singular they😱!! Time for some re-education in the Room of Consequence!

MagicalMarvo

“That’s just a Veggie Tales voice.” Yeah, specifically Jerry Gourd?? Who responds to another character saying ‘Hey, Jerry,’ implying that the real, actual Jerry Gourd is at the SMILE convention??? Why is Jerry Gourd at the SMILE convention??? Is this another secret dig at Veggie Tales?!!? Somehow?!!? Does Jerry Gourd canonically exist in the Odyssey universe?!!? Did Jerry somehow prevent 9/11 in the Odyssey universe?!!!?!??!!?

Ray of F---ing Sunshine

I remember being twelve and sitting through a sermon on the Idol of Happiness, learning that it's actually bad for us to make a life where the ultimate goal is to be happy. Specifically I remember being told "God does not guarantee us an easy life, he doesn't even promise a happy life. What we have is the promise of a good life. And God's good plan for Steven was to be stoned to death." Fucked up thing to tell a dysthymic pre teen. I forgot how mixed into the media I was listening to it was. God. Fuck. And they wondered why I was so miserable.

Im sorry in advance for the long post but I wanted to add my perspective as someone who regularly goes to Mexico and Guatemala for family and legal work. Protestantism is spreading like a wildfire in LATAM and in one way it feels like its a way to seperate from alot of the problems that Catholic church has but still being able to adapt local beliefs into being christian. Catholicism is the default in alot of LATAM and it shouldnt be that suprising that its memberships is falling while the new protestant variants are seen a 'with the times' and something new. Catholicism was the state for a long time and it formed the societal and cultural background for many. If one wanted to rebel against the state or society, protestantism was this new way to express it at a time where it felt like society and the state was no longer working. I am not saying this as a fan of the Catholic church but I cant help but worry about the not so subtle connections between evangelicalism and conservatism in LATAM countries with the US. Its like a wedge thats being driven in to seperate and give conservatives a way to say that they are different and if they act like Americans then they can get some of the benefits of that American connection.

Somebody mentions Randy Johnson and I must mention my favorite TTRPG based off of him, Don't Kill a Bird With a Baseball

BOYSAREBACKIN.TOWN

The "he quoted you" is a reference to the Christchurch shooter saying "subscribe to Pewdiepie," I think. Marshall probably heard about it on facebook or from one of his, I presume, idiot children. It's like the anti-Ilhan/pro-Covington Catholic SVU episode from just before the pandemic but somehow dumber.

BOYSAREBACKIN.TOWN

Also third Whit has the distinction of sounding like he's dying rather than sounding robust until suddenly dying. Nigga sounds like Zordon in the Power Rangers movie after Ivan Ooze cracks his tube

BOYSAREBACKIN.TOWN

(I'm black, just realized Patreon merged my user and pod profiles, my bad for the possible jump scare)

These interstitials are SO GOOD. I'm so invested in these characters, and I'm upset that I'm now caught up! Can't wait to see where the story goes from here!
