On this month's Fancy Movie Time with Brian and A.J., we play a high-stakes game of solitaire looking for that dastardly Red Queen as we make our way through the labyrinthine and meandering plot of John Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate (1962)! Is Angela Lansbury's chilling portrayal of Eleanor Iselin enough to make this movie a fancy feast? Or do its dated politics and terrible Frank Sinatra fight scene make it a failure to fancy? Either way, we think you'll agree that Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being we've ever known in our lives!

Fully a year late to this but did y’all pick up that Fran Sinatra’s character is meant to be read as gay fitting the whole themes of masculine panic and spies and secrets and sexual confusion? Like the Janet Leigh scene reads perfectly if she’s a man cruising him

A little context for the Epileptic child, and the claims that Julius was epileptic; the word Epilepsy comes from the Greek Epilepsia, which means "to be taken hold of," or more specifically "possessed." *Because,* as the Greeks diagnosed the condition, the sufferer was being afflicted with the experience of some kind of divine visitation: a God or lesser divinity was alighting on the person and in response, their body is wracked by spasms as the material flesh cannot integrate the visiting spirit. As a result, epilepsy became associated with being favored by the gods, which may be why Caesar's diagnosis has survived to be reported: it was an attempt to leverage folklore to help legitimate his claim to rulership.
