Legend says that a free for all almost happened in canon, but the Network took one look at canon-Deku's fate and decided they couldn't air something so graphic lmao.

Smart choice having him toss the hot potato and go for smaller numbers to pass, its always bugged me that they targeted the biggest number instead of just trying to pass but I get why they did it

I think a free for all is a good alternative to the cavalry battle. Same concept really, just any teams are spur of the moment and just as likely to fall apart as not. And yeah, I will admit I am one of the ones looking forward to the tournament.
