Zelda (The Legend of Zelda) struggled to breathe while exploring a shipwreck, and when she felt she was about to pass out, she opened a bottle containing a fairy to help her recover from her drowning experience.

Unfortunately, the fairy could only heal her wounds... not her empty lungs, only delaying the inevitable end of the princess's dive... and the player's need to retry the dungeon.
