We just passed the two year mark for Doomscroll !

I'd like to do a Q&A segment for an upcoming episode. This will be a chance for me to respond directly to audience questions and to think through where we are as a media project right now.

If you'd like to submit a question (or comment), please comment below on this post. Topics can range as far and wide as you see fit. I'll chime in on the thread as well

how many beers do you recommend per pod ep?

Teun

Your guests have had quite wide ranging viewpoints on topics, yet almost all conversations are very constructive and ageeable. Do you feel the need to challenge the opinions of your guests? Or is Doomscroll focused on finding common ground?

Collin

Do you feel like you've made a good impression on the midwits (me) you are trying to reach with this project? How successful would you say Doomscroll has been in your opinion? Remember to love yourself big man.

Nathan Kramer

A: Why the decision to make Doomscroll a podcast, and not an installation, book, or other form of art? B: Should the centrists become radicalized?

William Schaefer

With the rapid decay of platforms popularity, change in ownership, and the constant shifting ground of online subcultures and their references, how do you see Doomscroll weathering unexpected changes in the coming years? Is there any concern of long-form videos reaching a point of saturation? Do you see a community around you as being a support of these challenges, more of an audience to something you're building, or something else?

I’ve been watching your show for awhile and have found it very informative in revealing minor histories I wasn’t aware of before and then would look more into it. I’m curious though if the show could ever take on a more structural proposal based aspect towards the envisioned more egalitarian, more just/fair/aesthetic alternative society than just critique/shit talk of the present situation although funny/serious and illuminating. Part of me feels you think if people just read certain books we would all be on the same page but the truth is that the left is very heterogenous, with varying degrees of literacy levels and education… so I wonder how the show can take on big concepts and express them in practical terms that embody those concepts while drafting and proposing new social models? Because I think people are more swayed by solid arguments towards practical change, the steps towards new relationality, where for-profit logic is diminished. Because we don’t want to repeat Chile’s constitution fumble. Or a figure like Masaniello. Thank you.

What if any sort of intervention should people in the Doomscroll orbit make to try to bring social democratic politics beyond the stereotypical Commie Corridor demographics and into other/more working class populations?

Scotty McMasters

Even though the discussion of the working class movements is happening and there are good efforts for movements like it in the corners of the Midwestern world, why has a show like this one who's goal seems to target where that area needs this thinking the most, avoid the very real subject of the propaganda used in these areas and the lack of local, lived, resistance but a transplant resistance fighting that bad information? I live in Missouri where the topic of gerrymandering is the biggest one today, but the fact that every reasonable source on election output calls the 'game' as if there is no chance of change. When in fact a big part of the game being called is nobody is covering the incumbent challenges or races in general. I would love to know your thoughts and if I need to clarify my thoughts let me know.

What might an early Statebook look like in 2026?

Ian Stawin

Since the Ego of Cumtown has appeared on the show, is there any conceivable chance of the Superego or Id making an appearance? 🎭

First, I want to say thank you for this podcast. I discovered it a year ago and have been consuming every video more than once and even sometimes watch episodes together with my daughter. I am a Gen X'er and my daughter is in her 20's yet we both find the conversations very insightful and engaging. The podcast has become my primary source for deep political thought. Second, some suggested topics and guests (I know this is a very ambitious list): 1. Ta-Nahesi Coates and discuss both the Message and what he saw in Palestine and maybe challenge him on Reparations and how that steered the left in a wrong direction as opposed to championing labor in the BLM wave 1 era. (Less preferred would be Ibram Kendi) 2. Dave Chappelle on humor and politics. Where he stands on championing labor versus identity politics. Not a lot of people explore his economic views. 3. Someone who represents classic 2010 Feminism (and Me Too) and maybe explore how their thoughts have evolved in the last 3 years. 4. Ryan Grim, one of my favorite journalists. Maybe cover both his journey and establishing Drop Site News as well as his predictions for the next few years of American politics.

In the process of preparing for a guest on Doomscroll have you ever found yourself developing a new position on an issue?

manatee island

There have been some references to changes in the art scene (specifically in NYC?) around the 2010s-2020s that you've made, but it's never gone into too much detail. I think many of us would be interested in a guest's (and your) take on this change and how that affects today. Is there any plan to do a little dive on this topic?

Overall, the media screws up whenever they talk about MMT. They say they just want to spend forever and never have inflation. It is no different than any other political mischaracterization or straw man saying that public utilities or medicare for all is equal to gulags and bread lines. Understanding how our money really works can unburden our movement from having to depend on the rich to pay for the Scandinavian programs we all want. I'll ask and offer for you to have some MMT friendly guests on. I can do my best to connect you to the right people. My question is to share what you understand (or don't) about MMT and what your exposure to it is. What do you think of the Rationalist movement?

Liam Kramer-White

Interested to know if you are planning to have any guests talk on spirituality. Seems like theres a void and opportunity when it comes to a materialist spiritual organizational mythos. The tech right got Nick land a sort of neo-manifest destiny to coordinate its teleology. What sort of cosmologies do you see as congruent or at least interactive with social democratic, or utopian-communist ideologies?

Liam Kramer-White

How do you personally maintain your faith in your projects?

Forrest Moss

If part of the rationale for this project was to create an algorithmic funnel on platforms for left politics in the age of social media, how does the rise of oligarchic AI slop, increasingly siloed AI platforms, and the ever greater share of AI content on the internet -- along with the anti-AI response to all of this -- affect its trajectory?

Is there hope for European electoral politics in the age of far-right anti-truth?

You inspired me to join the DSA. But these people are woke as fuck. What am I doing wrong?

How should the left in the US address culture war issues that have we’ve consistently pulled poorly on (crime/public safety, gender sexuality, etc) when building a big tent populist movement?

Corey Vaughan

A question from a leftist religious listener -- Part of my political radicalization has occurred alongside a faith deconstruction. I left the evangelical church a decade ago and have found myself spiritually fulfilled and politically motivated in the Mennonite Church. Do you think there is any hope to change the tide of evangelical nationalism? What is your perspective on the effectiveness of leftist activism with a Christian focus? (To clarify - I mean Christianity as a radical faith of peace, of loving neighbor + enemy, of feeding the poor, of welcoming the stranger, of freeing the prisoner)

RyanG

Public school teacher chiming in. Pick your question! 1. Why doesn’t the left speak more often about the state of public education / youth literacy? Conditions have been worsening dramatically since Covid. 2. How can teachers/parents better equip the youth to navigate the dystopic media landscape they are growing up with?

William Ince

With more and more of the internet moving to semi private spaces like Discord, have you ever ran into any interesting but harmless internet communities that you wanted to learn more about, only to have a hard time tracking any solid information about them down?

Maẍ Ållstädt

Catherine Liu and Vivek Chibber make strong points about how overemphasis on identity and trauma is self-sabotage for the left. Their solution seems to be a simplistic insistence on class-only politics. We've seen plenty of instances of this not working in the past; (oversimplifying but for example the USSR and China retained race/ethic/sexist bias despite socialism). Two questions about this: 1. Do you believe there's any effective way to integrate class forward politics with more direct interventions to address the problems Liu and Chibber believe are being *over*corrected in academia/woke 1.0/tiktok leftism? 2. Some of what Liu and Chibber say can easily be misconstrued as in the realm of Bill Maher-esque "stop being a pussy" territory. I don't believe they're dismissing real bigotry or abuse, but the vibes, especially in short clips, can come off that way. If I appointed you Commissioner of the Tone Police, what would you have to say about this? In my opinion figuring out how to toe this fine line is one of the hardest problems for contemporary leftists. I'd be happy to hear even your shortest, broadest take on it.

Where do you get your ideas?

the oldest of Gen alpha is about to be ‘buy a pawn shop guitar and learn a black flag song’ age. Any hope for the coming punks?

Party In The Attic

Thoughts on the Graham platner run I saw he was mentioned on the show a few times. Was wondering if his allegations caught you off guard or if you’d been assuming he was a bad deal from the start. Were you honestly skeptical of him and do you think there are any lessons to learn there in terms of what kind of red flags to look for from populists who position themselves as left wing, or is it just a uniquely bad candidate?

Noah Brown

What kind of exposure should children have to the internet? I’m a substitute teacher and students as young as 12 have iPhones and chromebooks with nearly no restrictions to any content on the internet. I’ve had to send kids to the office for watching porn in the middle of class. It seems every force on the internet is steering the user towards gluttonous consumption, how can kids experience the wonders of the internet without getting their brains fried by gooner edits and sigma grindset slop.

Ramon

What challenges have you encountered during the making of the podcast series? Have you changed your approach to the show (for example, the types of guests, questions you ask, the video editing) over time?

JD Nonce

Can we see an interview with Adam Curtis at some point?

Maria Sgromo

Could you elaborate more on the social media and internet restrictions that you and others have formulated for youth/people of the future? you have mentioned in the past that being the only way to end a lot of the issues that arrive from the free and open internet. And adding in state supervision. How’d you get here? What are the downsides? Etc

Will you go back to your roots and talk about gaming subculture organization or DKP? Has your thinking changed on the matter now that your milieu is less twitch streamer and more socialite?

A Archuleta

do you think paintings will ever matter again at a society wide level or is the art of the image now just permanently subservient to the ever shrinking attention spans of the masses? did they ever matter to the masses? has it always been the case?

Manserfaust Productions

Has there been a guest you have greatly wanted but for whatever reason has not been able to get them on the pod, and/or are there any figures who have reached out who you didn’t want on the pod or didn’t think fit your goal for the conversations?
