I know it was sarcastic, but to your final point about shutting off the internet…I think most on the left, however anti-AI they are internally, have pragmatically felt that it’s too late to go back to a more analog society, but ever since Black October I’ve been seeing more people earnestly concluding that there may be no other option if we want to avoid constant disaster, insecurity, and alienation. We are in a trap now where social ills are either directly caused or exacerbated by AI/internet, and because these systems are so advanced and unintelligible even by experts, these same technologies are our only defense against them. Our already incredibly centralized tech ecosystem will have to centralize further, eliminating the possibility of democratic control. I don’t believe there will be any end to this escalation trap, as both offensive and defensive AI models will race each other for dominance, with our lives as collateral. Is there finally a serious argument for disentangling the world from tech? I know you expressed dissatisfaction with Germany’s paper policy, but that may be price we have to pay for security. Clearly security and convenience can’t coexist. Almost everyone seems to agree that our lives are too busy/stimulating/stressful/fast-paced and it should be obvious that technology only increases the progression of these things rather than alleviating them. I want to eliminate bureaucracy as much as possible but I think we will have to massively re-localize the world in order to do so. But the alternative is unacceptable.
