TapeMachine 2 is out now, and it is the biggest plugin I done in a while. This is the first JUCE-free plugin I have released as is uses DPF (DISTRHO Plugin Framework) for the UI. I am liking it way better than JUCE so far: It's lighter, easier to work on and has slightly better CPU performance.

I might move some of the buttons around and tweak things (like the presets) as time goes on, but it feels like I hit a good stopping point to get it out into the world. One thing that you might notice that needs work is the PEAK LED on the VU's is based on output, not input. Its cosmetic, but I will switch that up in a future release.

From a DSP standpoint, it is a re-tuned rebuild of the original tape machine's engines: Swiss (A800 style) and American (ATR-102 style). The Swiss machine is nice and punchy and controlled. The American one is the mastering deck: wider, smoother, more open on top.

What's in it:

Anti-aliased tape saturation with per-speed head bump and HF response

Four tape speeds, four tape formulations, adjustable head width (American Only)

Wow and flutter, repro EQ, and front panel toggles

20 factory presets modeled on the classic hardware settings

Calibrated against hardware references, band by band

Builds for the following:

Linux (x64 and ARM64)

macOS

Windows

Full manual included.

Yes! Multi-Q is technically done. I just need to finalize testing and release it. I’ve been slacking on my posts. I’m fixing a few bugs on Multicomp, but that will be getting transitioned next.

There's a minor hitch for me: Failed to load VST 3 plug-in /home/xx/.vst3/tape_machine_2.vst3: /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.38' not found (required by /home/xx/.vst3/tape_machine_2.vst3..

Dusk Audio

What version of Linux? Type ldd —version and let me know your GLIBC version

Carl Vaulx

Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu GLIBC 2.35-0ubuntu3.13. All the other recent plugins run fine, tho I haven't tried Studio. Thanks.

Dusk Audio

Ah! Gotcha. The CI build I setup for the DPF plugins was set to "latest". I just updated it to "Ubuntu 22.04" and re-ran the builds. Grab the latest version now and you should be good to go.

Carl Vaulx

All good! Love it!! Mercy buckets. 🙏🏾

Hi, great update, I’ve been testing it and noticed something interesting. In Ableton Live, when I look at the plugin’s parameters list, there is a Calibration parameter that goes from +3 to +9 like the UAD tape machines However, this control does not appear in the plugin’s graphical interface. Is this intentional? Would it be possible to expose the Calibration parameter in the GUI in a future update?

Dusk Audio

Thanks! And yes, this is completely wired up behind the scenes. I just need to expose it to the UI and add the knob or drop down. I'll add that to the GitHub issues as a future enhancement.

That's great, my friend! A small slider would be really nice! By the way, will it no longer be possible to adjust the oversampling?

Dusk Audio

Great! I will definitely add it to the next release. Out of curiosity, are you noticing CPU issues or aliasing? I can add an oversampling option, but I didn't feel like it was needed due to the internal oversampling working so well and maintaining low CPU usage.

Jardev24

I haven't had any issues with aliasing. I was comparing the performance of both versions with 2x oversampling, the CPU load is slightly higher, though it's barely noticeable. The big difference is that the first version doesn't consume CPU when it's not processing, but the second version continues to use CPU even when not actively processing audio, 40% less, but it still consumes resources even when nothing is playing. that's all

Dusk Audio

Ah! That's an easy fix. I will and an OS option to the advanced menu as well .

Jardev24

Great bro! keep it up!
