232. The Weight of What We Couldn’t Save. (Patreon)

Gwen POV:
I’ve always believed that movement tells the truth about a person.
The way someone walks, the way they fight, the way they hesitate. Those are the moments where masks slip and intention becomes visible.
Right now?
I was moving like a storm that didn’t want to kill and that… that contradiction sat heavy in my chest.
My Archangel of the Web Mk. II responded to my thoughts precisely, it was almost affectionate in the way it obeyed me. Micro Gravity Control Units pulsed along my limbs, subtle distortions bending the battlefield to my will. Soldiers, guards, enforcers lifted off their feet like loose debris caught in a hurricane.
I didn’t crush them or tear them apart. I just… moved them. Redirected them with tremendous concussive force and took them out of the equation without killing them.
Because I couldn’t.
Not again.
Not after Miguel.
A flicker of that memory tried to creep in but I shoved it down hard.
Peter’s voice echoed in my head, “We are our own reflection. It's you who defines who you want to be.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I muttered under my breath as I vaulted over a collapsing barricade. “No pressure or anything.”
A blur passed me.
I turned my head slightly, HUD already locking on.
Taskmaster ran towards something while ignoring me.
“Of course you’d ignore me,” I said dryly, pivoting mid-stride and redirecting my trajectory. “Rude.”
My HUD flashed a proximity alert.
Closest Avenger: Hawkeye.
I didn’t even hesitate.
“This is Archangel to the Avengers,” I said, my voice snapping into clean, professional cadence. “Taskmaster is heading toward Hawkeye. I repeat, Taskmaster is heading toward Hawkeye. I'm in pursuit.”
Cap’s voice came through, steady as always. “Copy, Archangel. War Machine is moving to intercept.”
“Negative, Cap,” I cut in immediately. “I need agility, not firepower. Rhodes will just turn this into a fireworks show and turn her into Lead infused meat paste”
A brief pause then I continued, sharper this time.
“Melina, Shostakov and White Widow haul ass to the northern wing. Hawkeye, fall back and maintain distance.”
Yelena’s voice came through almost instantly.
“Acknowledged, Cap and Archangel. We are moving.”
“Good,” I muttered. “Because I’d rather not explain to Peter how Clint got fucked up under my watch.”
I pushed harder, moving faster. The world blurred around the edges as I was running at inhuman speeds but not at Peter's pace.
I arrived after what felt like an eternity.
Clint had already created a defensive angle using debris and structural pillars, giving himself narrow firing lanes while denying Taskmaster clean replication angles. It was… honestly impressive.
“Funny,” he said without looking at me, loosing a hardlight arrow into a shadowed corridor, “you’re here faster than my problem.”
I landed beside him lightly, folding my arms.
“You know, Mr. Barton,” I replied with exaggerated politeness, “I’d think by now you’d realize Peter doesn’t exactly cut corners when it comes to protecting his loved ones.”
“Yeah, yeah. Forged in celestial fire, blessed by techno-angels, yada yada.”
“Excuse you,” I shot back. “It’s primordial celestial fire. Get it right.”
He rolled his eyes, checking his bow.
“Relax, birdbrain,” I added casually. “Your bow has a self-repair function. Try not to cry if it gets scratched.”
“How everyone becomes this nonchalant around you is beyond me.” He muttered.
I shrugged.
“I grew up doodling on J. Jonah Jameson’s face during live broadcasts. Chaos is kind of my thing.”
Before he could reply...
Ding.
The elevator opened.
“NO NEED TO FEAR, RED GUARDIAN IS HERE!!!”
“…Wow,” I said slowly. “You weren’t kidding.”
Yelena physically tried to hide behind Melina.
“That thing is not with us,” she muttered in pure embarrassment. “That is… independent clown activity.”
“Too late,” I said cheerfully. “Association has been established.”
Before anyone could spiral further into embarrassment Clint moved his hand causing a hardlight arrow to be fired straight up.
The ceiling vent exploded open and Taskmaster dropped through.
Everyone tensed while preparing to fight.
I… didn’t bother.
“Alright,” I sighed, lifting a hand. “Let’s not make this dramatic.”
Gravity folded upon Taskmaster, causing her to freeze mid-motion. She was pinned, suspended and completely immobilized by gravity.
I walked forward, almost lazily and removed her helmet.
Her face was scarred and empty.
But her eyes? They screamed.
I released the Mist.
First she broke then collapsed and began crying.
“Fifteen years…” she whispered. “Fifteen years trapped inside my own body… Thank you… Spider-Woman… for saving me.”
I scratched the back of my head awkwardly.
“Eh,” I said with a small shrug. “No big deal. Just another day for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Woman slash Archangel of the Web.”
Because if I didn’t joke?
I’d break too.
Then the intercom came alive with Peter’s voice.
“Testing. Testing. This is your Captain, Peter Parker speaking.”
“Sixty seconds ago,” he continued, “the Red Room Academy became property of Parker Industries and is now fully under my control but I also bear bad news.”
My heart did a that it does before sensing bad news.
“Out of 6,087 Widows… we were able to save 5,000. The remaining 1,087… were beyond salvation.”
My fingers curled slightly. Not in anger, in… acceptance. Painful, quiet acceptance.
“The ethics committee will investigate all actions taken,” Peter continued, voice unwavering, “but current evidence suggests no unwarranted force was used.”
“Remember the 1,087. Carry them with you. Their deaths are not failures of those who tried to save them but the tragic consequence of what was done to them.”
I closed my eyes briefly then opened them again.
“Remaining 500 Widows,” Peter finished, “proceed to evacuation transports in an orderly manner.”
I exhaled slowly.
“Alright,” I said, clapping my hands lightly. “Funeral later. Work now. Let’s move.”
No one argued.
Natasha Romanoff POV:
I’ve seen leaders. Both real ones and fake ones.
Men and women who shouted, whispered or hid behind power.
Peter?
He didn’t do any of that.
He stood there. Carrying the weight of numbers most people couldn’t even comprehend.
Dreykov laughed.
“You lose,” he muttered through swollen lips.
Peter didn’t react immediately.
He just looked at the names, the numbers and then he spoke.
“Do you know what’s fascinating about the idea of perfection?”
Dreykov didn’t answer. Peter continued anyway.
“Everyone chases it. Nations, scientists, generals and even monsters. Yet no one ever stops to ask… what if it doesn’t exist?”
Peter took a step forward. “The 1,087 who died today… will be remembered. This fortress? This monument to your cruelty?”
He gestured around us. “I will turn it into a museum. I will dig up every mass grave you created,” Peter continued. “Every parent, every child, every life you discarded. I will give them names again. I will give them dignity and I'll make sure the world never forgets what you did.”
“I didn’t lose,” Peter said. “You just don’t understand what winning actually looks like.”
This wasn’t revenge or even justice.
This was something… bigger than us. This will be a reminder.
Behind me, the Widows stood.
One by one at first then all together.
They saluted Peter. Not out of fear but choice.
Peter acknowledged it and moved on.
Peter POV:
The horizon looked… calm.
Like the world didn’t care what just happened.
Maybe it didn’t and maybe that was the point. The vastness of the world cared not for the insignificant ants that crawled and clawed upon its flesh for it is vast.
Behind me, the future Red Room Memorial and Museum descended toward Moscow.
It's a scar that's about to become a warning, a grave about to become a memory and a system prompt blinked into existence.

DEATH’S SCYTHE. (MINECRAFT COMES ALIVE MOD.) CAN RESSURRECT ONE SOUL IN EXCHANGE FOR ANOTHER.
I stared at it. “Huh. Getting a little mythological now, aren’t we?”
Technology.
Science.
Logic.
Those were my tools. But lately?
It felt like I was stepping into something… older.
“I couldn’t save them all.” I said.
“I'll never fail again.”
That was another truth and I accepted it because pretending otherwise?
That’s how people like Dreykov are born.
“But I saved 5,000 and tomorrow? I’ll try again.”
Because that’s the only thing that matters.
Not perfection or victory. Just...
Trying again.
And again.
And again.
Until the world stops needing people like me or until I stop breathing.
Whichever comes first.
