We chose the blue bikini because it matched the doors.

A very sophisticated artistic decision.

Then Mariarosa took the top off herself, and my carefully considered colour coordination ended up lying on a table. 😂

For this part of the morning, we stayed at the fishermen’s casetas, made use of somebody’s lovely little terrace and discovered that an ordinary bottle of water could keep us photographically occupied for quite a while.

There are 30 photos in this set, plus the story behind them below.

A relaxed retelling from my own memory of the story behind the blue-bikini set

I’m Sure It Was Just the Heat…

After the brown swimsuit photographs, we were still at the casetas.

And I wasn’t particularly interested in leaving.

There were those blue doors, the peeling paint, the old wood, the light… Everywhere I looked, there was something else I wanted to put in a photograph.

Mariarosa had more bikinis.

You can probably see where this was going.

She showed me what she had brought, and we chose the blue one together.

“That one could work.”

“Because it matches?”

“Yes. There is a very sophisticated creative process happening here. Please respect it.”

Sometimes photography involves years of experience, an understanding of light and a carefully developed visual language.

Sometimes the door is blue and she has a blue bikini. 😂

Nothing about this particular setup had been planned beforehand. We liked the location, we were already there, and it seemed a shame to leave while it was still giving us ideas.

The people who owned this caseta had made themselves a lovely little terrace. A roof for some shade, a table, somewhere to sit.

I can imagine them putting it together and thinking about morning coffees by the sea. A cold beer in the afternoon. Getting the family together, putting some food on the table and spending a few hours doing absolutely nothing.

Very wholesome. Excellent use of a terrace.

I’m fairly sure they hadn’t pictured Mariarosa taking her bikini top off and giving my camera her best sexy eyes while some Belgian guy stood there saying, “Yes. That looks really good.” 😂

But they had chosen a very photogenic table.

And those blue doors.

They’d practically done half my job for me.

Nobody was there that morning, so I looked at Mariarosa, looked at the table and made another important artistic decision.

“Maybe sit up here first?”

“On the table?”

“Yeah. Let’s see how that looks.”

It looked good.

Their terrace had considerable potential beyond coffee.

And that immediately created the familiar problem of me deciding we needed another photograph. And then another. And perhaps one from slightly over there.

Leaving a good location is a skill I have yet to develop.

I wasn’t directing her very much beyond those general suggestions. Sit on the table. Stand beside it. Turn this way a little.

She was doing plenty herself.

And, as far as I remember, I didn’t even suggest taking the bikini top off this time.

She just did it.

Oh. Excellent. That answers a question I hadn’t asked.

I was very happy with this development.

For once, I managed to keep my artistic feedback reasonably concise.

“Yes. That works.”

A remarkably restrained summary of my thoughts at the time.

What I remember about this part is how relaxed it felt. I couldn’t tell you what we were talking about between every photograph. Those conversations haven’t stayed in my head.

But the feeling has.

She was comfortable, we were taking our time, and I knew I was getting good pictures.

Especially once the top came off. I do enjoy having that particular option available. 😂

I liked the idea of leaving it spread out on the table, where it could remain part of the photograph.

“Leave it there?”

“Yeah. I like seeing it in the frame.”

We had chosen the bikini because it matched the doors. I was determined to get some use out of that colour coordination, wherever the bikini happened to be.

I put my swimming goggles on the table too.

Those were mine, by the way.

An extremely versatile piece of equipment. Useful underwater, but apparently also capable of making a table look like somebody was having a much more interesting morning than usual.

We kept moving around that little space. Sitting on the table, standing alongside it, leaning over it, then sitting behind it against the wall.

There was enough there to keep working without needing to find another location.

Then came the bottle of water.

I suggested making some photographs of her drinking.

“Just drinking?”

“Let’s start with that.”

A wonderfully innocent sentence, considering how the photographs were looking.

She started with the bottle while still topless, facing the camera.

And I thought it looked pretty fucking good.

Blue doors. Beautiful light. This is going very well. Try to remember to check the focus.

After a minute or two, she reconsidered.

“Maybe this looks a bit too vulgar.”

That was her feeling about those particular photographs.

My own assessment was somewhere closer to cool and sexy.

But she wanted the top back on, so back on it went, and we carried on with the bottle.

I was hardly going to run out of reasons to keep photographing her.

By the final frames, the water was doing rather more than simply being drunk. It was running down her skin and over the bikini, catching the light.

We had managed to get quite a lot of mileage out of a very ordinary object.

By then, it was getting hot.

The sun was climbing, we’d been shooting for a while, and I needed to cool off.

I had also just spent quite some time photographing a very cute Latina taking her top off, giving my camera sexy eyes and eventually pouring water over her boobs.

Whether that contributed to my sudden enthusiasm for getting into the sea, I couldn’t possibly say.

I’m sure it was mainly the weather. 😂

So we went for a swim.

And my swimming goggles finally got to do something other than sit on the table making the photographs look interesting.

Very glad I’d brought them.

Always important to prepare for the heat.

Looking through this set now, I don’t have one particular favourite.

I like the photographs together: the blue bikini against the doors, her hair falling across her body, the top lying on the table, the close portraits and the bottle sequence at the end.

And I like remembering how we arrived at them.

We found a place we liked. She showed me another bikini. We tried a few things, changed things as we went and kept shooting.

A very pleasant way to spend a morning.

Especially from my side of the camera.

And we still had one more look to go.

A red bikini this time.

I’ll save that part for next time. 👀

Vamos a ver cómo queda.”

Quedaba bien.

Ella me enseñó otro bikini.
