Yayyyy good morning! :D - HaruMaki is uhhhh Big. Either the biggest or second-biggest in fandom (the other behemoth being NicoJoo). Disclaimer: I generally tend to avoid the shipping circles these days (mostly because I'm Old lol) but I've been here since the early 2000s, I know shipping is part and parcel of the idol industry, I met one my best friends ever through her RPF and we just hit twenty years, no shame whatsoever. Anyway yeah they're Interesting. During &AUDITION there was a thing where they all had a heart-to-heart around a campfire to get things off their chest and Harua was like "it's been awkward between Maki and I for a bit and I'd like to fix that" and Maki apologized for being too handsy and making Harua uncomfortable and they made up and were very adorable and cuddly for a long time after that. Less so these days, but they're clearly still very close. Maki's kind of loud about everything he does, so it was (and is) very obvious that he adores the hell out of Harua, and Harua is quieter and subtler but does take the opportunity every now and then to show that he's not just tolerating it. What's interesting to me is that in &AUDITION it's framed as though they'd all just met each other at the beginning of the show, but many of them had been training together for some time prior to that already (which I'm realizing is pretty standard for survival shows of this type, for pretty obvious reasons). In a concert some time later, Maki said "I'm so glad I came to Korea with Harua in summer of 2021," which a) was just about a year before &AUDITION and b) they came /together/, meaning they already knew each other even BEFORE they showed up for company training. It's been mentioned a few times again since then. As far as I know, they haven't said anything further about when or how they met, but they're certainly one of the pairs who've known each other longest. I do agree that HaruMaki fans have seemed increasingly hungry for a while, because things have settled into a pretty undramatic dynamic and they're nowhere near as shippy as they used to be, so the fans have been scraping the barrel a bit, doing the "they looked at each other!! SOULMATES" thing, lol. These days, they and Nicholas are known as the "shoppingz" because they all enjoy fashion and go out to shop together a LOT. It's adorable. They're adorable. <3 ANYWAY. - Maki and Jo's missions were translated as "nitpicking", but that was actually an untranslatable stand-up comedy term, "tsukkomu", a verb that basically means "be the straight man". When someone does something goofy, make a cutting comment that makes the goofy thing funnier. Think along the lines of "I don't know what I expected" or "anything but go to therapy I guess!" or "are you having a stroke?", lol. You are kind of being an asshole, but in a collaborative way with a partner who's in on it. Maki got the extra condition (do it in the Kansai dialect, which often gets compared to various American South accents because it's a bit twangy) because he does tsukkomi all the time, but Jo does Not. Maki's points are hard to catch because it's like trying to translate a guy from L.A. throwing in some twang and the odd "bless your heart" when you're not famous enough to have a good translator yet, lol. (The translations on these episodes are sooo weak sometimes, it's tragic. They did great on the old slang, though!) - The butt-writing was I thiiink the first I legitimately cried laughing watching this show?
