SAO is in a weird spot for me. It's ok in the first half of the first season and then it gets really weird in the Aincrad arc (pseudo incest thing going on, and the whole Asuna stuff which I do not want to talk about). GGO in season 2 is just an insult to first person shooters in general, Rosario was actually a pretty good and fun arc, and Alicization was pretty solid for the most part minus a few things. It's a turn off your brain kind of series for the most enjoyment. SAO progressive is the best IMO. It actually focuses on the game the series is named after, and it fleshes out Kirito and Asuna as actual characters. Only minus is no Klein.

Very surprised that SAO is winning, to me it's an anime with a decent amount of strengths and a very very high amount of defects that slowly loses its bad points while gaining many good ones with the passing of season to the point where from the last arc of S2 to S3 as a whole you can proudly just call it a good show. I really really don't get the SAO hate, all I can say is grow up. And I mean that sincerely, I've rewarched the show probably past double digits at this point, I say this proudly, I love it. As someone who likes trashy isekais, its a trashy isekai. Its carried by production, its premise is cool but not original and has all the flaws of typical isekais. Besides the production side theres nothing that stands out about it vs other isekais. Sure its a hate popular thing type of hate but its also just a mediocre series. I understand where you are coming from but these other isekais came out after SAO, it released back in 2012 and there was nothing like it, isekai existed, but not "stuck in a game" premise. Nowadays, I don't really keep up with isekai shows but I'm pretty sure the ones that tried this trope failed, except for Log Horizon ofc. So I don't think you can compare it like that since it's technically an isekai but it's all virtual.

You do know that SAO was written in 2002 and the anime came out in 2012 right? Since then all the generic isekais have been copying the Kirito look and that's why it feels basic now.

I could go into character development but that would just be spoilers, but there definitely is plenty of character development if you actually pay attention to the story. The story definitely isn't anything revolutionary but it is still really well done, especially in the later parts of SAO. Not trying to spoil but throughout the entire show you get to know and see what the impact of the first half of season 1 has done to the world as a whole and how everything is connected, most anime cannot pull something like that off. But i would love to hear as to why you think it is so bad.

If isekai slop had better writing, the isekai slop would be the ones with 4 seasons and 3 movies. The p*rn driven narratives are nothing but fan service, they do not take up most of the show. Those types of scenes are not my thing either but i can look past that because besides the fan service it is incredibly enjoyable. And it is strange that you say alicization is where it has the worst worldbuilding because that is where the anime just kind of drops the harem and fan service and focuses on the story. The way you get to know the world and people in alicization was my favorite part beside the amazing fights that happen. If you like an interesting and unique story where you need to pay attention to every word of dialogue to truly understand it, you watch fate. The problem is nobody knows what SAO is trying to do. First half of season 1 was very good and than the plot switched significantly. It was a 6/10 for me at the first watch. Very enjoyable at the first half of first season and good at alicization. But not worth a reaction, because it's to long and most of the time a little bit boring, imo. It takes away the patreon slot for other good shows. It's just another generic power fantasy anime. That's my opinion.

Not every amazing show needs to be a masterpiece of writing. A book needs amazing writing to be entertaining, but this is anime and so many people don't understand that. In anime weve got art, animation, fight choreography, music, voice acting and so many more things. Sword art online does these things really well and unlike Solo Leveling which it gets compared to a lot, the story is a really big part and there is not constant fighting but also plenty world building and character growth. The only thing in SAO's way and the reason it gets so much hate in the first place is the fan service and cheesy dialogue. Which, starting from season 3 it has way less of. Point is, enjoy the little things in life.

Fate isn't that complicated BUT you need a guide for stay night because the original VN has many routes and endings so Ufotable decided to make 2 season for one route(Unlimited Blade works)and 3 movies for the other(Heaven's feel) Zero Is the prequel to Stay Night, it spoiles some of the plot twist of SN but you can watch It first anyway. i watched first season, the second part was just unnecessary and horrible. them getting out was the perfect ending and they should have stopped there. then i watched s2 and it was just not good at all i only made it trough 5 episodes i think i cant remember anymore... after that i just stopped. couldnt care to pick it up again and i prob wont

Made in Abyss is very good. The storytelling and world building grab your interest from the first episode. The art style is beautiful in terms of the world and kinda cutesy in terms of character design, and the music by Kevin Penkin is unlike nothing else in any anime. It’s very different. But it’s not for the faint of heart. I’ll just say that you should be prepared before watching it.

SAO was my second anime after Fairy Tail. I loved the whole show and watched it while it was first airing. I never understood all the unnecessary hate it got but I think you guys are right about the hate not really having a reason. Ppl like to hate just cuz they see other ppl hating on it fr. Main reason is the harem, which is not for me at all and I don’t really like the main girl and her relationship with kirito.
