As for the sound quality, it's clear that the original has aged quite a bit, and the English version actually wins on the technical side. Obviously it came out later i US and with better recording equipment. Admittedly, I can always go for the remastered version of the original

If you see this for about 50-60 ep it will be very much fun adventures slow ( may feel like a grind) But trust me if you stay with it and get past the first 50 or so ep will become extremely good, just please please don’t give up on it. near the end of dragon ball it gets insanely peak. then into dragon ball z were everything gets more peak

No way, Kai is like a watered down version. The dialogue is lacking by trying to be 1:1 to the manga lines and significant moments in the series are rushed. It takes out all the meaning and buildup. Besides no Faulconer score which is probably one of the things Nicholas likes most about DBZ. And since he wants to experience dbz as we did in the early 2000’s it’s definitely not Kai

Not particularly I prefer watching subbed but modern subbed dubbed just sound better in og DB. The audio on the Japanese just doesn’t feel as emotional as the dubbed in my opinion.

Ah, I forgot that later on they finally fixed their huge mistake of trying to make their own opening song, and just kept true to the original "tune" of the opening, just translated to English. Which is fine, not as egregious as whatever the fuck the 90's dub decided to shit-smear over our faces with that garbage they used to have. To answer Nick's initial question, I was about 15 when I watched this episode in 1994, well before any of you mouth breathers were born, and well before any jackass US localization studios decided to make a mockery of the series with their shit-ass first dub of Dragon Ball. Though funny enough at the time, in 1994 I had already watched about 30% of Dragon Ball Z before I even saw the original Dragon Ball, and it wasn't even from the beginning. No, in those days when trying to find sources of anime, it was "whatever you can get from a guy that knew a guy that knew a guy that knew a guy that got it from Japan" type of thing. So I first started with many of the movies even before I saw the TV series. Then we got some episodes of Cell Saga, some Android saga stuff, then I managed to get a source that was able to get me the start of DBZ with the Saiya-jin saga episodes, jumped over to Buu saga, etc. So I had a mish-mash of VHS tapes with a LOT of gaps in between. Thats just the way it was at the time, and we were lucky to get what we could get. Then my friend showed me the original Dragon Ball episodes one day, just like the first dozen or so. Unfortunately I had to wait for years and years later when Dragon Ball started to really gain steam in the US and we finally started getting anime on DVD where I was able to get the blue boxes of Dragon Ball box sets that I finally managed to start the originals over again and watch it all the way through without any gaps, in Japanese of course. (before that, even finding the American VHS releases of Dragon Ball, it was impossible to find it not dubbed, and fuck that noise) So yeah, here we are like 33 years after I first learned of Akira Toriyama-sensei's most well known work, and I'm still a huge Dragon Ball fan. Fuck the dub though.

The fillers in dragon ball are amazing and they don't feel disconnected from the story unlike Naruto's. The only problem I have with DBZ dub is Frieza's voice. Even though back then I grew up and really like the voice, but after hearing DBZ Kai and Super Frieza's voice I started liking it even more. The only issue I have with Kai is kid/teen Gohan's voice and not having Bruce Falconer OST. The OST always pumped me up watching the battles...

@chris because it came from a time when we actually had voice actors auditioning for anime roles etc the voices were perfect and the matched. We also grew up with them yes lol. I watched goku as a woman for super and honestly I prefer super subbed. I rewatched both OG and Z subbed and the dubbed is just leagues better in that regard. What i think ruined the dub for super was the music.....
