Whenever I see Bulma persuading Yamcha to go to the barber, I’m reminded of the film TINY TOONS ADVENTURES HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION when Elmyra clips a Lion’s mane into a Bart Simpson haircut (“Long hair is SO Retro!” She explains). Later in the series, Yamcha would sport a Bart cut (around the time-1991 - said film was being animated).

The anime alters the sequence of events. The manga had it: 1. They enter the grounds & Roshi signs them up. 2. Roshi gives them the GIs (the uniforms). 3. Goku & Krillin enter the elimination rounds, Goku’s match, the bullies, Krillins match, etc. (Yamcha watches undetected). 4. Yamcha reunites with Goku. The manga has Yamcha doubt if he’ll make 2nd place due to Krillin. Meanwhile, outside Roshi meets Bulma & gang. 5. Elimination round over, Goku & Krillin go for a reunion with the gang. The manga has Goku surprise Oolong from behind saying the laxative sound (long worn off at this point). Oolong happily greets Goku.
