Naruto

Are you not reacting to witch hat atelier

Connor Fears

Please watch Kai INSTEAD of the original Z! The OG has filler in basically every episode, the voice acting is much worse, and the dialogue is not manga accurate. The only ones saying to watch the OG are nostalgia blind and trying to waste your time.

Gon copied it from Goku

DBZ is the classic way and is loved by many more than Kai. Kai did not do justice to the series with the redrawn frames where it looks fanmade (not in the good way), removes the meaningfull filler that adds character development and sometimes rushes through impactful scenes removing all the buildup towards it, it spoils half the Namek plot in ep.1... voice acting doesnt always have that natural flow like DBZ does and feels overdone at times, the Buu arc is a disaster and only available in a cropped format, and no option to watch it with the American Faulconer score whose soundtracks Nick loved listening to. Despite Z's flaws, it's a complete product unlike Kai which is good for a rewatch, but it's a product made with half measures and should not be someone's first experience to Z. And besides DBZ is the way Nick would have experienced the series as a kid since he's from that era.

Connor Fears

Kai is accurate to Toriyamas vision while Z is not, which is enough to ruin the entire experience since it is not character accurate whatsoever for so many scenes. Plus you’re literally proving my point saying that’s what kids watched, the only thing carrying it is nostalgia, not to mention fights take 3 times as long as they should with nothing happening, that’s not “meaningful filler”, there’s no such thing. And to say the voice acting is over done is just crazy 😭😭 ik there’s no point in arguing about it because people that grew up on Z will stand on that shit until they die but as someone that has seen both in adulthood, it’s clear which is better so I’ll live it at that.

Elijah

Nah Man, I kind of desagree with you here. Honestly, you’re mixing nostalgia with actual facts. The “redrawn frames” in Dragon Ball Z Kai are a small minority. Most of it is just Dragon Ball Z cleaned up in HD. Saying it looks “fanmade” is a stretch. The filler in Z “adding character development” .. most of the time it just drags the pacing or even contradicts Akira Toriyama’s original story. Kai cuts that out on purpose to stay consistent. “It rushes big moments” .. not really, it just removes the artificial padding. If you’re used to Z’s slow pacing, of course Kai feels faster. Voice acting and music are mostly subjective. The Faulconer score thing is pure nostalgia anyway, it wasn’t even the original soundtrack. I didn't liked it personnaly Buu arc + cropping, yeah that’s a fair technical complaint, but it doesn’t change the fact that Kai is way more digestible overall. I can reccomend him the Z version of this arc but for the Saiyan Saga ? The Namek Saga ? Hell no And “Nick would’ve watched Z as a kid” isn’t really an argument either. Look I grew up with the Z version too and I've rewatched it recently and alla I can say is that there was MANY FLAWS and compared to the manga or Kai the story and the characters are not the same AT ALL. At the end of the day: Z = nostalgic, longer, with extra (not always good) content Kai = cleaner, more faithful, better paced Saying Kai shouldn’t be someone’s first experience is just forcing your nostalgia onto others.

Deam

Bro Kai is Ass. Dbz all the way

Napolii

Accurate to Toriyama's vision = the manga. Anime is an adaptation, Z has it's differences but the central theme is identical. if anything it's Kai who is discrediting and going against Toriyama's approach of 3 major Namek plot points by revealing it in episode 1... if you know you know Saying that's what kids watch is me only stating DBZ is what Nick would have grown with when he watched some Z clips and listened to some Faulconer tracks, you made no points here and acting as if nostalgia is a bad thing. As I said Z has it's flaws, certain fights being dragged out is one of 'm especially the final Frieza fight. Kai's cons don't make up to it. Nick watched One Piece, Z's pacing would be 0 issues to him. There is a reason Z is significantly watched more than Kai and why the Kai project started and ended with DB Kai, not too many people are interested in it. It was made to try and appeal Dragon Ball to Gen Z when it releases in 2009 but it backfired hard bcs people were expecting a remake and not a less flavored DBZ version. The diminishing efforts put by Toei in Kai is visible as the series progresses, the last saga is a masterclass in failure

A

I'm a ball dragger🙌

Connor Fears

“Is the moon a planet” 😭😭 love you Nick

Kay

Kai is definitely a better overall product, but there's lots of moments where I think the original dub cooks harder, the ssj3 scream is the obvious example, but I also much prefer Gohan in the original dub, and it's always felt a little strange hearing Saiyan saga vegeta with Chris sabots fully realized vegeta voice, I always thought it felt pretty good for his character development that his voice sort of develops through to buu saga. And most of buu saga in general I find the original dub to be more pleasing, even if the filler can get annoying in small places

Napolii

@Elijah My main points stand as to why i don't recommend Kai if one had to pick to watch only Z or Kai. Ofc watching both removes all the debate but no one who'll watch the series for a first time will do that. Saying the Faulconer score is not the original score is blatantly wrong when watching the dub. Funimation hired Cakemix/Faulconer corp. to create the soundtracks for the dub. Kai does not look visually cleaner, again the redrawn frames, not the og frames that are color corrected, look like a MS Paint creation at times and is very obvious when the frames transition from the original frames to the redrawn ones.

victoria t

Welp, mr. Rabbit and the peeps Goku put on the moon are all dead and floating around space now…

victoria t

KAI IS BETTER THAN OG Z. OG’s dubbing is ass compared to Kai, as is the pacing. Kai is objectively better and the only people who disagree are those who watched Z first and are ***blinded by nostalgia.*** OG Z is literally unwatchable in the dub after watching Kai it’s not even funny. Kai is also much closer to the actual manga compared to OG Z

Deam

Bro, The Moon is not a Planet.

Elijah

@Napolii I get where you’re coming from, and honestly I respect your take, you’re actually bringing real arguments, not just hating for no reason. I think where we mainly disagree is that you’re looking at it from a dub + nostalgia perspective, while I’m looking at it from a “what’s the cleanest version of the original story” angle. About the Faulconer score, I get your point it is the original score for the dub version of Dragon Ball Z. But it’s still not the original intended soundtrack of the series itself. For me personally, and for a lot of people outside the U.S. who didn’t grow up with it like us. Honestly it often doesn’t fit that well, and it rarely lets scenes breathe since the music is almost always playing, even when silence would build more tension. For the visuals: I won’t deny the redrawn frames can stand out sometimes, that’s fair. I just think it’s a bit overstated how often it happens, and overall Dragon Ball Z Kai still looks more consistent and cleaner in motion because of the remastering. And yeah, if someone only watches one version, I get why you’d recommend Z..especially if they care about that specific dub experience. I just don’t think Kai is a worse first experience, more like a different one: more faithful, faster-paced, but with less of that nostalgic charm. Also, personally I’d be a bit frustrated if Nick ends up getting inconsistent or even contradictory info because of added dialogue or scenes that weren’t in the original story. Some of that stuff straight up clashes with the source material over time, and it can hurt the overall coherence of the narrative. So yeah, I don’t think you’re wrong, I just think you’re prioritizing different things than I am.

Naki

amazing arc

Dave

I wonder if Nick is still going to be a fan between red ribbon army arc until around ep. 50. Because the arc will feel slow and a bit boring. 😅

Chase Waltrip

As someone who watched both at the same time and was not blinded by nostalgia, DBZ is better than Kai. Kai honestly had worse voice acting and Nick agrees that the Goku from DBZ is top tier when it comes to the Dub. Yes the filler is pretty bad, but kind of a nice pacing.

Napolii

@Elijah If Kai didn't slaughter the Buu arc, it would be a complete product which I could totally recommend. Toei showed no care in Kai, they didnt bother to clean up the colors and somehow believed not releasing or broadcasting an uncropped version of Kai would be legit and appreciated by fans. these reasons alone are mostly why I don't recommend Kai. thats almost half the series which only exists in a cropped version and has a pissgreen tint to it where even shades of blue likes bulma's hair shifted from Blue in Z to green in Kai. To get back to the scores, the Z dub exists with the original score just like Kai, however the Z dub was created with the Faulconer score in mind, they complement eachother and it adds an extra dynamic to it, mostly more tension and fear are brought to scenes with that score. Kai's yamamoto scores is alright, but overuses some tracks often. The original score in Kai is a good alternative but the placement is sometimes questionable, showing again Toei really didn't put care in the product. Lastly, the bit where Z changes some lines would never bother Nick unless someone is a manga purist, but then again no anime is a 1 to 1 copy of its manga but they are adaptations and do things differently at times to make the delivery to the audience better. The main themes and story progress is identical to the manga, that part I never considered a critique point. Though i dislike why Funimation never considered asking the Japanese how some names or pronounced like Kaioken. I dont mind the Americanization of the attack names, but some are not even translated but reinvented names. Kai does it better by using the japanese attack names but sometimes it decides not to with some attacks, not very consistent. None is perfect but the first argument I made about Kai stil is a massive red flag imo. Kai would have been 10x better those issues werent persistent. Add to it that Z does worldbuilding and character development a bit better by having meaningful filler scenes, and you'd understand why I'd say Z is the better experience. The best dub version would be Kai that keeps some of the filler with the Z animation cells rescanned by Toei to 2K or 4K not some digital remake like some frames in Kai, a mix between Kai's and Z's acting and either a toned down Faulconer score , Faulconer sometimes needs silent background music, or another score that brings a new dynamic to the scenes.

what r u on about, the red ribbon army arc is literally one of the best arcs that og dragon ball has to offer

Elijah

@Napolii Yeah, I think we actually agree on most of it. On the big picture, I don’t disagree with your main criticism. The Buu arc in Dragon Ball Z Kai is clearly the weakest part, especially with the cropping and some visual inconsistencies. And overall, I can understand why you’d say Dragon Ball Z feels more “complete” as an experience, especially in the dub context. That’s basically also my conclusion: I don’t really see Kai as a replacement for Z, more like a cleaner and tighter version depending on the arc. are excellent in Kai, Cell is more debatable, and Buu is honestly better in Z. The only real difference between us is the music argument. So yeah, I think we mostly agree, just with slightly different priorities and what we look for in the experience. Honestly, with this exchange I don’t know why we still don’t have a proper remake of Dragon Ball at this point. This kind of debate wouldn’t even exist if that actually existed today. At the end of the day, the choice will be up to Nick on which version he wants to watch… It was a nice exchange.

Jalen Green

Yh for real dbz fans not newbies

Jalen Green

Let’s see if Nick get bored of the red ribbon arc coming cuz it’s lowk slow, us real dbz luv every arc but let’s just see

Jalen Green

They low-key gotta bring back Nam and make her date Piccolo, piccolo needa sum ass

andrew mccormick

In the manga & Japanese, the Announcer also lamented that werewolves can’t transform without the moon…

sahel herrera

Janken is just rock paper scissors in japanese

Dave

I've rewatched the arc after budokai Tenkaichi recently and tbh up untill ~50-ish ep.(before we meet HIM) felt slow compared to other arcs. Muscle tower was always enjoyable though.

Sean

Red Ribbon arc is where the show drops off hard, but picks back up around the Korin arc.

Dave

I'm not saying that the arc is bad but does feel slow and dragged compared to others.

D.j. Lachmandas

Fuck Kai lol worst itteration of dbz ever made

Yu C-Man

Hard disagree, muscle tower is one of my favorites

Amadhe

What manner of lies and heresy arst thou spitting? Red Ribbon Arc is pure peak into greater Peak.

mochilikesmavis

Feel like it only gets better and more technical as it goes.. Love Dragon Ball, glad you are enjoying it

Napolii

my first thought after watching his reaction to that 2nd episode just now.. like where was the song in the final clash

Napolii

RR arc is one of my favorites. Comedy gold some of those episodes

NoTroubleBubble

The fighting that never fucking ends reminds me of Baki 🤣 You gotta watch that someday ‼️

CitadelBrulee

Yeah, gotta disagree with you here, RR is great

cthuluchan

Yo if you are genuinely loving this show and will carry on with Z, you NEED to get your hands on the Seed of Might color corrected version. Toei has absolutely shit on this franchise so hard and the only way to watch it as it was intended is thru a fan-corrected rip (it looks AMAZING) It is hundreds of GBs but maybe react to TotallyNotmark's vid on showcasing the differences and the complete disrespect Toei has treated this show, I think you'll be more shocked than seeing the OPM3 filters

Oskari Suomela

DBZ is life and you will see it at the end

Rocked In

As long as he can watch the driving class episode I'll be fine

Balcknoto

Where is the Tenkaichii song?

Dave

You didn't feel like the first part of it is slow?

Peaceful Remedy

Ik he probably won’t do it but a part of me hopes he watches GT eventually (ik it’s flawed but so is super)

Bleach Calaminator

If he plans on watching Daima then he needs to see GT first.

Gabriel mella

Any one else having trouble watching the videos specifically on dragon ball uploads? The video stops always at 5 seconds only when i watch these DB uploads

MadeInSound

He NEEDS to see this. I actually did an entire folder myself with everything updated, but I don't really know how to contact him and make sure he can notice. What is sure is that Crunchyroll and most streaming sites when it comes to Dragon Ball is sadly the worst

Napolii

Well i started last week adding +- 10eps weekly to Vimeo for him to also watch but i doubt he'll see that comment and be stuck with watching db on crunchyroll which is a pity. https://vimeo.com/showcase/12197695?fl=so&fe=fs (password = balldragon)

Abirim

Everytime Goku is down, the guy forgets counting. But when Goku is Winning he counts immediately

Byakuran

I like it better without.

Riley Young

Nicholas with all due respect, the moon is not a planet

Henrï

Nic dont listen to the Kai is ass people, if you want to feel the true voice acting of dragon ball, kai is where its at.

Hiauyang

A planet is what orbits a star, like the earth orbitting the sun. A moon is what orbits a planet, also known as a satelite.
