the problem about riding on the pillar one has thrown out himself is that in order to catch up with the pillar, he has to be faster than it, but since he is faster than it then he will be able to land at wherever the pillar is able to land at and even farther, making the throwing completely meaningless.

No. The pillar has a great deal of momentum. If he didn't use the pillar, the air resistance would quickly slow him down. By riding on the pillar the air resistance isn't as important.
