It's funny that you want a movie in this style, considering there are already two *Violet Evergarden* movies. ^^

We see a lot of close ups of Gilberts emotions up to this point, but we never get told outright what exactly it is he's thinking, and I honestly think it's such a fantastic detail about the story, because we are seeing it through Violet's eyes for the most part of the series! Like, we as the audience can obviously pick up his discomfort and guilt where Violet can't, those expressions are things she has to think back on and learn the meaning of, which is why she keeps recalling them. We, as the audience, have a better idea but we also still don't completely know. I think in that moment Gilbert just Wanted the war to be over. He Wanted to be relieved, and that cost him his eye because he stepped out of the mind of a soldier for that one moment when he turned to Violet and smiled at her. Was he thinking about all the things that she could be, or he could be, or they could be? We don't know. But the way he turns to look at her in that moment always read to me like him saying. "See? We're here now. It's over."
