I’m not sure whether facts from their history that are not explained in the anime count as spoilers. But if you want some more context about Dietfried relation with violet, you may read next part. Or just ingore this. Anyways - I found this interesting, so i share for anyone interested At the end of episode 5, when Dietfried sees Violet for the first time, he says to her: “You damn tool who killed so many of my men… and now you’re writing letters?” This is the only line in the anime that hints there was something more between them. ==================================================== BE AWARE: THE NEXT PART ISN’T FROM THE ANIME. IT COMES FROM THE WIKI AND, AS FAR AS I KNOW, IS BASED ON VOLUME 1 OF THE NOVEL. ==================================================== Dietfried is terrified of Violet, sees her as a monster, and blames her for killing his men—even though she couldn’t even speak at the time. So she isn’t just “a girl he dislikes for no reason.” They share a back-story the anime omits (which is a shame, because it would make their interactions more meaningful). Below is a fragment from the wiki that gives context without spoiling future episodes: "Back when she was a child, Violet was found on a deserted island alone after Dietfried Bougainvillea and his comrades' ship became stranded. She didn't have a name at the time, and Dietfried was unsure if she had become orphaned or if she had suffered an accident in the sea just like them. Although Dietfried didn't have any intention of doing anything since he was already annoyed, some of his subordinates approached Violet and attempted to rape her. Before Dietfried was able to stop them, Violet killed them in response. Terrified by her actions, the remaining soldiers all fled, but Violet continued hunting after them. Dietfried and his remaining underlings then decided to kill her, but before they could act, she had already slaughtered everyone except for him. After that, he was pursued by Violet, but she only followed him around and didn’t even attempt to kill him. Dietfried realized that Violet couldn't talk and couldn't understand words. He also concluded that she was the only inhabitant of that island and that the reason she had killed so many people was simply that she was ordered to do it. Once he understood that, Dietfried did repeated experiments. For example, if he pointed to animals or insects and said "kill," she would immediately do so. This also applied to humans. Despite her inability to speak or understand language except the order to kill, Dietfried brought her home with him. " Then he decided to give her to his brother, knowing how capable she was and believing that she would, in a way, be able to protect him. We all know how it ended, but from his perspective—he saw her as a monster useful only for killing enemies—it seemed like a sensible choice. We can assume that he tolerated her presence for his brother’s safety up until the events where the anime begins.
