Also this is very anecdotal, but the few times irl I’ve seen SA allegations being proved false were when the allegations came from someone other than the alleged victim, so this feels very similar. Cos like if any of them actually listened to Gilbert they would have probably realized none of it was explicit, and were in fact things he wished for in a parent. Goes to show how the dehumanization/infantilization (tho in this case it was an actual child but I can’t think of another word) can be harmful.

"Cos kids don't lie, not about *that* thing" Is soooo goooddd, because there's a reason why there's specialized therapy and interview techniques for kids. They have 0 clue about *anything* and need help sorting that out. If the adults had thought past their anger for 0.5 seconds, they'd know that. On the other hand, the justice system lets too many perpetrators go for a lot of people to trust in the process so I get it. All of this to say, Gilbert, *it's still not your fault*

I love the detail of Gilbert saying he didn’t understand things so he nodded along—this is so common! Adults, even those who work with children, often assume kids understand common phrases or words and don’t ever check!
