ALSO! I am in fact obsessed with that one chapter so I immediately clocked that that’s not what Leon actually said to Gilbert and just checked to confirm it! I love how you do memory as clearly unreliable! (I think what he actually said makes it obvious Gilbert knows, but Gilbert gave him an out because I think even he doesn’t want to believe it)

In all honesty if Elias told Gil he just wanted to be friends and stop the physical part I think Gil would loos it. Kids like Gil could think that his only worth or redeeming part of himself is his body and of through physical relationships. He may think Elias dose not want him anymore if he stoped. We have already seen Gil get very defensive/upset about people leaving him.
